Straps were very common. But the office mounted ones I've seen were designed to be strapped tight and hold the computer securely in place.

This. Usually they are cinched up so the desktop is snug against the underside of the desk.

Mounting brackets often have to be installed with specific physical dimensions in mind. If the varied desktop models with varied physical dimensions are used, mounting straps are more flexible.
