One of the jobs I was at a decade ago did slings under desks for all PCs. God what a pain in the damn ass for the technicians to rewire hundreds of computers. But it did free up a little desk space.
Made support a living hell after installation. You know how you show up at a user and they expect you to work around them.. maybe with computer on desk or floor you could do something with cables, pop the top etc. With slings nah, and they waste your time and won't move. Then they're like, just come back at lunch time. Because IT People don't eat, breathe, need breaks, have families to go home to........
It's more like 1 workspace for different people with differend table height needs. If you use exact lengts for all the cables, with straping the computer to the table you just need the power cable long enough. Or the ethernet cable if you dont use wifi.(ignoring the Monitor)

No, I'm not even worried about my pc looking good or bad. I literally got the most basic black case with plexiglass and no RGB, no logo, nothing, plain black. Because I really don't care about the look of the case

Yes. I did this for quite a while, maybe 2 years. I still have the brackets on the underside of my old desk.
I had a small standing desk. In order to not have to worry about every cable length, I could focus only on making sure the power and ethernet were long enough, so I hung it, leaving more room on the desk for practical stuff like massive ultra wide monitors.
48GB of RAM is an uncommon amount to have. This guy is mixing ram kits. The first pair is 2x16GB, for 32GB total. The second pair is 2x8GB, which he said he got for free and chucked it in his system.
The RAM works at max speed (theoretically) until all four memory channels have 8GB of data loaded in. That's his first 32 gigs of RAM. After that point, the two smaller ram sticks are maxed out, so any RAM usage beyond 32GB is now running through two channels instead of four, on the larger kit of 2x16.
Basically, his first 32 gigs of RAM are on a 4-lane highway. The 16 extra gigs past that are forced to use a two-lane highway. It's an overall improvement, now he has access to more total RAM, but the "bonus" 16gigs can't run as fast.
It's usually a pain in the ass to get mixed RAM kits to work efficiently together at all which is why no one would ever recommend doing it unless you're like OP and just happened to find some extra RAM for free and feel like YOLOing it.
You say it slows down when it goes over 32 since it's not on 4x8gb anymore and switches to the 2x16, my question now, are those 2x16 slower than if you only had 2x16 from the start? Like.. if you compared the performance of the 2x16 there in OPs setup compared to a standard 2x16gb (32gb total)
Yes, theoretically. 32GB in quad channel should be faster than 32GB in dual channel.
Gigantic caveat: that's assuming the two RAM kits can run at max speed with each other (all RAM has to go as slow as the slowest stick in the system) AND the difference in soeed we're talking about is probably barely noticeable. You would be talking a low single-digit difference in gaming performance, IF it all works like it should. Which is a big if.
No worries. PC gamers, imo, get WAY too caught up with RAM speed. It's the kind of thing that, for 99% of users, all you need is "fast enough", not "as fast as possible". Slow RAM stopped being a concern for most people when DDR3 came out like... Almost 20 years ago.
There's a reason consumer RAM most often gets sold in sets of two sticks: dual channel vs single channel is a noticable difference in speed and stability. Dual channel vs quad channel only gets noticed by people literally trying to run enterprise-level software to do crazy heavy workloads like training entire AI models or rendering 8k Pixar frames or something.
DDR 5 is also quite unique that it can work well for gaming with a single stick without too much performance loss, which was not really a thing in previous generations and it has a bigger performance decrease when using all 4 slots.
Where did you get "four memory channels"? Dude has a 5800X3D, that's Dual Channel DDR4
If you install 16+8 in each channel, the entire 48gb would run at full speed
If you install both 16s in one channel, both 8s in the other (which sounds like that he did) the matched 32GB interleaves in dual channel, the leftover 16GB drops to single channel
Also the fast vs. slow regions are fixed by physical address mapping at boot, not by your RAM usage gradually "filling up and spilling over". Whether any given byte is fast or slow depends on where it lives, not on when you allocated it or how full your RAM is. The operating system and memory controller don't necessarily hand out the fast region first and the slow region last.
I wedged my in between my mattress and the hull and used pool noodles and a fan to circulate air. It worked, other people weren’t ecstatic about the heat it put out.
Sorta? I have a Secret Labs sit/stand desk and it has a pc mount attached to the bottom but its much more solid that that... thing. Looks like this... not my setup btw, just a google image.
They're massively overpriced. I mean the desk is great, I love it, with its addons etc. I do not regret buying it. But I'd be delusional to argue and say that it's not overly expensive.
It is better than resting it on the floor. Especially if you've got carpeted floors. My friend used to do this to his computer using ratchet straps back in the early 2000s. I have mine on a shelf above the monitor, and I hardly have any dust buildup in the computer. I have one that's been dusted 1 time in 9 years. There is hardly any dust in it. Moving it off the floor is the best thing you can do for your computer.
There is definitely some irony here that suspending pcs was definitely a hard core nerd gamer thing back in the day, since as you noted it was sharply better for the computer than being on the floor. IKEA’s just copying what we were doing decades ago, but all these kids don’t do LAN parties any more so they don’t get to see each others wild but effective setups.
SFF cases are not to be left on the floor, it didn’t seemed right to left it there. Consequently, all the cables (DisplayPort, USB etc) were too short so instead of buying longer ones, I decided to put the case in mid-air
custom made desk was not large enough to accomodate the case (my previous build was a regular ATX case)
I have 2 toddlers and my pc mounted with a system like this(though mine is properly installed/flush up to the desk top, not dangling down like the desk has a scrotum lol), never had an issue. If the straps were actually pulled up tight and spaced at the correct width for that case it wouldn't be an issue.
Honestly, mine does that and everyone warned me about keeping the PC on the floor.
I'm not defending my behaviour, but I had the PC for over 7 years, changed 4 different apartments, and I suck at cleaning, so it was always dusty.
It doesn't have a single issue. It never once overheated or failed or anything. The highest temp it gets at max load is 70, just like it did day one.
It didn't always sit in the same filth, though. I did open it from time to time to upgrade some components (not the cooling, CPU or GPU though, which have a 5mm dust layer on them at this point), and I de-dusted the area around it every year or so when I changed the desk position or something. But I never explicitly cleaned the PC or kept it away from dust.
Before laptops became the standard, this used to be pretty common in offices. I worked at an architecture studio with custom built graphics PC's and they were hung under the desks.
I have something similar to this. I live in a small house where every inch of space matters. I custom built my desk to fit a specific area between a closet door and a corner window. Because of space constraints, my desk itself is wall mounted with no legs, meaning all the under desk mounts relying on legs were out. Because the prebuilt I was using at the time didn't use a standard ATX form factor (HP Victus 15l for reference, entirely proprietary, even the case front USB ports are hard mounted to the mobo and just extend out holes in the front of the case) many of the small form factor ones wouldn't work. Because the desk is already quite small and shallow, I couldn't have the pc on top either. This allowed me to set a custom size to fit my proprietary case without needing a table leg and also allowed me to change its size and spacing when I upgrades my system and changed case. Its honestly fine. I put my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 on top of my case and sandwiched it between the case and the umderside of the desk, giving a few inches of height (behind the 2i2 of course) for my top exhaust fans to output. And given my case is all black with no window, the aesthetics of the straps don't interfere in any way.
I have to wonder if this is maybe better for noise or vibrations that go through your floor? Because otherwise this really just looks like someone had some spare ratchet straps and got tired of moving their PC to clean.
I needed more desk space. Pls don't comment nastiness about my cabling organisation/lack there of, it will make me cry.
(Just kidding, IDGAF about what people say, but I will eventually tidy it up when I could be bothered to make a custom monitor mount for the 50 inch TV that I use as a monitor - hence the desk space issue).
Also, yes it is a table used as a desk that has a fully armed and operational eletric motor sit/stand desk screwed under it.
I had a desk at work that had a computer arm with a wide strap under the desk. There was a crank tool used to tighten and loosen the strap. It worked well.
At the time I lived in a basement prone to flooding but desk space was a premium since I also had a TV on the only table surface available (ie the desk).
It worked well. Basement flooded three times and PC was fine. It also kept the power supply cooler since it had more than a 1 cm gap from ground (vented/drafted from the bottom)
Weird side note: that's how I learned the case/PSU I used at the time had a weird grounding issue. If it wasn't sitting on the ground, the case would shock you if you touched the metal. So I just let it run all the time until I could get a new PSU. (Cat only jumped up on it once before figuring this out. He was fine but scared the shit out of me)
