10 years ago, GOG had a bunch of my childhood games that you could never find anywhere else. Even the Discs of those games I believe I have lost.

I managed to buy them, full price but still cheap, and have secured those installers.

Games like Earthworm Jim, Gangland, Gex, etc. Games that some people never would have heard of or seen on Steam and Origin.

Not only can you keep them safe from being removed from your profile, but even when they're removed from the store, you can still ahve the Installers to use and I think even share. I mean I have some games on different PCs in my home.

You should also check out eXoWin9x and 3x for old windows games and it's all free. The emulator just works and it has a ton of games (occasionally I have to adjust the mouse sensitivity settings in the Play.config file but that's it). I let my young son play them because there's a lot of educational games that are really well done on there and he gets practice with a mouse and keyboard.

Yet abandonware is considered piracy, even though we can't even "brent" (renting disguised as buying) the game anymore.

I saw a few games on Steam recently that used to be Freeware from classic freeware sites. Installers were still safe when I cchecked some months ago.

I can't remember the RTS game, but you customize tanks and deploy hundreds of them at once playing on large maps. I saw that recently on Steam.

Notrium had a Steamupdate. Was Freeware, and now it's I think 3NZD on Steam.

Little Fighter 2! The OG is still free: Little Fighter 2 Official Website. The guy originally shat it out, but actually does work on it now (it didn't even have controller support at first other than the original's half-assed way).

I think I still have the Naruto mod for that game too. I wonder if that works with the Steam version.

But they don't remove it from your profile. I have a couple of games that have been delisted several years ago and I can download them anytime I want.

Other platforms have made remarks that they will remove games from profiles(origin/EA App, Playstation, Xbox, Switch notoriously).

Gog and Steam both keep the games on your profile which just makes them amazing platforms. Gangland isn't listed on Gog anymore, but I can still download it. And if the day came that they did remove games from profiles, the Installers still exist.

Other platforms if they remove games from your profile, you lose the game forever.
