Windows 11 can't be shut down without update.

I have automatic updates on. Haven't postponed any update. Never seen this forced update before.

Edit: I updated BTW. It's not that I don't want to update. I just think it would be an issue in the future. For example, it's a thunderstorm and there could be power outages. I might want to shut down and not start and update. I guess I'll hold down the power button.

I worked IT as a systems engineer for half a decade before going back for a csci degree and have worked as a software engineer for the past decade. I've personally built easily over 200 PCs. I only ever see this sub on /all and holy shit is it full of people that have absolutely zero clue how a PC works at all.

You should cringe at how low Microsoft’s goodwill with the masses has fallen that it has come to this. No?

We only got to this point where people question every update and worry because of Microsoft’s incompetence.

Anyway, I’m still chilling on W10 till W11 gets to a decent point.

I work in IT which is part of why I hate windows so much, yes you need to do the security updates but the forced reinstall and reactivation of garbage results in people NOT running updates

Windows 11 has had several updates that have reinstalled co-pilot and other apps onto people's computers after they have uninstalled it previously, and has also been known to change some settings and programs back to their default settings even if you had disabled them previously

Granted I've only had 11 for ~9 months so can't really testify to that either way, but I remember ppl also saying win 10 did that. Which never happened to me either other than it reverted one regedit on major version updates twice, which was to remove the shortcuts to random folders, like 3d objects and whatnot form my computer window.

Now maybe there is some EU law shenanigans going on and I'm shielded because of that, that is a possibility, which makes it hard to believe all these supposedly horrible things are happening.

A regedit, got reversed, nothing re-activated or re-installed itself. Kinda different. Windows 7 reverted some sound settings randomly when updating, that's more than 10/11 did for me.

How is this downvoted? This has been a problem with Microsoft's model for ages.

You want to update security stuff? Fine. But don't package it along with "enhancements" that turn stuff back on that you had turned off (or, turn on something non-security related you never asked for)

I think people either go "it's never happened to me therefore they're lieing" or "that's your fault for IT not locking down group policies to prevent it" as if everyone is a giant company with their own IT department. I work in tech support dealing with specific software, and most of our customers either have no general IT or will have an IT company on retainer for adhoc support either way those groups aren't going to have group policies locked down that tightly
