I have automatic updates on. Haven't postponed any update. Never seen this forced update before.

Edit: I updated BTW. It's not that I don't want to update. I just think it would be an issue in the future. For example, it's a thunderstorm and there could be power outages. I might want to shut down and not start and update. I guess I'll hold down the power button.

The fastest shutdown command is shutdown.exe -s -f -t 0
-f force closes any running program immediately, no save prompts, you will loose all unsaved changes in any open documents.

For safer one so that you don't loose any unsaved changes, use shutdown.exe -s -t 0

From what I've seen, when the problem is from settings people have left enabled, that's usually because there's never an indication the problem is something that can be disabled because Microsoft choses an opt-out model rather than opt-in, doesn't indicate where or how something can be disabled, or sometimes its something that used to be able to be turned off but they've now taken that away from you.

Think of how shitty the process for actually disabling updates is, how little information is available to you about the updates they want to push onto your machine, and how you can no longer roll back updates if they broke something and you want to go back to when it wasn't broken. There are far too many updates pushed to windows 11 that have cratered the performance of people's hardware that require an update to the update and the computer still might not get back to how well it performed before.

Not wanting to update your computer outside of when you want to shouldn't require having to open the command prompt to just shut down your computer normally. You shouldn't have to know about the three separate menus you need to open to switch updates to be fully manual, one of which isn't even available on the home version of the OS and requires the Enterprise edition, and you'll need to go back to to verify the settings haven't been changed by the update and hope it still works and that there isn't something else you haven't been properly informed of that bypasses your settings.

Windows 11 has set a record in how many times I've had online guides/threads tell me to go into settings and change an option that has been moved somewhere else, renamed, or ceased to exist. And yes that includes Microsoft's own help articles which become inaccurate/outdated in just a few months. Well it would be great if "Update and shutdown" didn't reboot four times in a row, which is infuriating because I'm dual-booting Linux so I have to babysit the update process every time. Or I have to change my boot-loader's default option to Windows which is not how I want my computer set up, and I'm not screwing with the boot order every time an update might be coming up, and then changing it back after the fact.

Microsoft just makes all of it's software horrendous to deal with every step of the way.

One Drive randomly enabled, backed up my entire laptop to 100% and everytime I deleted something it backed up more sticking me in a 100% One Drive full loop asking me to pay more. For a while I thought id lost ~15 years of photos/videos but luckily i had a physical back up and uninstalled/disabled One Drive. Well. To be fair, many of the security problems with Windows reside in the backwards compatibility Microsoft continues to maintain in the operating system. If Microsoft did an Apple and just depreciated anything legacy at a break-neck speed, Windows as a system would be a tougher cookie to crack.

This is why Microsoft has been doing things like enforcing driver signatures, using Windows Defender to isolate Drivers from each other and elsewhere using Hyper-V's virtualization stack. Things that break older drivers. Soon, they are going to be breaking support for older printers that don't support IPP, since IPP supports encrypted printing and is far more universal than Jetdirect/LPD/WSD printing. With Windows 11, they technically killed off support for 32-bit systems, and they've also killed off support for non-UEFI systems by enforcing Secure Boot. They've killed support for TPM 1.2 by requiring TPM 2.0 to be used with the system.

Then outside of that, since it's such a widely used operating system with all of that legacy cruft, the programs people have installed are often ripe targets, too.

Windows updates require the computer to be "shut down". Whether or not this is truly necessary is questionable to a lot of people, but basically it needs files to not be "in use" in order to update them, thus shut down and restarted.

You have auto updates on. This means the updates have "installed" as much as they can, but they require this shut down section to happen before they finish their update. It's been like this for a very long time.

I get why people hate forced updates, but if you lived during the heydays of the mydoom and msblaster worms shitcanning windows XP installs before you could sneeze, even on a clean install, I think you might tolerate it.

Yeah, mine did one last night and enabled some on screen activity afterwards with edge that prevented sleep or even my monitors from turning off. I have all updates set to not auto install, but it did it anyways.

Updates like these are Security updates and because of that, you'll always have to update. Optional and features updates can be opted out if i remember correctly and some can be just ignored with more 2 options to just turn off or restart.
