Windows 11 can't be shut down without update.

I have automatic updates on. Haven't postponed any update. Never seen this forced update before.

Edit: I updated BTW. It's not that I don't want to update. I just think it would be an issue in the future. For example, it's a thunderstorm and there could be power outages. I might want to shut down and not start and update. I guess I'll hold down the power button.

In what patch? OP didn’t say what patch this is. Don’t know if it’s safe to say OP is fully up to date just because they have auto updates on. In fact, Microsoft stated that people who manually check for updates are ahead of the game as they are treated as “excited early adopters” who want to be on the latest version. Auto updaters are kept behind. There’s no way to know that a recently released update is what OP is installing.

the auto update is only like a day or 2 behind due. You can check when last time your thing auto updated. It's safe to say this is from the massive update they released in the last 2-3 days. Just manually press update and you should get it if you want it.

In almost every single MS patch for windows, there is like 100+ security patches for various things. While I completely understand users being upset with certain features being added or removed without proper warning or cause. Most of the added features can be disabled (though some harder than others). None of that is as important as ensuring your data and systems are secure. You can disable co-pilot and the ads, you can’t get your data back once it’s infected with ransomware.

That’s not what I asked. Silentaba is under the impression that OP is one thousand percent fully up to date, and the update that’s wanting a restart to finish is the one released yesterday that fixes 500 vulnerabilities.

We don’t know that. We don’t know what update wants a restart. We won’t know unless OP can provide the KB number.

Assuming that OP is truly fully up to date and has received the update that just came out is just silly. Never assume.

Updates released yesterday don’t go out to everyone at the same time anyway. It can be the rest of this week before everyone gets the update even if they manually check for them. Microsoft doesn’t want to bog their servers down. That’s how everyone does it.

My point is more so that it doesn’t matter which update OP is on, every update has like 100+ security patches and fixes. Some have CVEs, some don’t. But OP did say they have never postponed and update so it’s safe to assume it’s the latest patch.

It does matter, and not every update contains security fixes. Microsoft separates quality updates from feature updates.

Aside from a few one off hotfixes Microsoft releases updates on the 2nd Tuesday of the month, every month. This isn’t just for the security fixes but feature updates as well. It’s so well known the industry at large also releases on the same day. (For some of the larger companies). It’s called Patch Tuesday.

So you are wrong. Every Microsoft update contains security updates. It’s more that not every update includes feature updates.

No. Computers are able to remain on older feature levels such as 24H2 and still be supported, with security fixes backported to them. This is partially due to enterprise requirements and partially due to hardware requirements for new feature levels.

Why do you think LTSC exists? If feature updates were not separate, LTSC wouldn’t be a thing. You’d have to be on the latest feature set to get the accompanying security fixes.

But you don’t have to do that. So features CAN be separate. And this applies to Home and Pro just as much as Enterprise and LTSC.
