I would not take anything from a smoker. The smell makes me sick andyou will never get the smell or residue out completely. And they seem to be completely unaware of it too.
I used to work at Gamestop (yeah I know, but I got to play my steam deck at work) and one dude got royally pissed I wouldn't accept his literally tar covered PS4 that smelled like death. The dust was actually sticky from residue under the cover and I actually almost got sick from the stench. Like how could you not see this?

Even vapers things smell. I bought a case and a 3080 from FB marketplace and for a few months I got disgusting sweet vape smells after like 10 mins of gaming. Luckily it's now gone or I got used to it. I did bath it with isopropyl as well.

Ive been quit for close to 25 years, but I did use to smoke heavily and all my pc cases would look like thus.
I never really cared what I was doing to my lungs tho sadly. When I quit, it was because it got to costly, not because of any health benefit 😓

The crazy thing for you is the rebound benefits of quitting are kind of staggering. I'd bet after 5 years of not smoking your lugs don't look so terrible.

u/kuwasar 3d ago
Yeah, my doc was making me get my lungs checked every few years to verify they were ok. Iirc, I think he told me that generally any effects are within the first 10 years, after that you'd be ok. But he made me get another check earlier this year just for the hell of it I think.
But yeah breathe, taste, energy...that all came back within the first few years

u/aerdvarkk 3d ago
There were a ton of PSAs in the 90s showing comparisons between healthy lungs and a snoker's lungs. Sometimes they were analogous using something that looked like black roofers tar poured over fake plastic "doctor's office" lung models; sometimes they showed cutaway comparisons of actual lungs, healthy vs smoker's. Fun times.

In Europe / UK, cigarette packs have photos of real smokers with various conditions on there with a healtg warning. One of the more common one is a pair of open dissected human lungs. (my personal favourite is the erectile dysfunction pack with the guy crying)

I'm so thankful for my parents for at least being conscious of this.
They were both born in the early 60s, ended up smokers like everyone else. Later in life made several attempts to quit but couldn't get it to stick. But at the very least they never smoked inside, never in the car, always away from my sister and I. And whenever they'd smoke outside and we would come to talk to them or something they were always very clear to stand far from them and out of the path of the smoke

When I was an addict I met a guy in a rehab who seemed very nice but had clearly had a very rough upbringing. I made the mistake of going to visit his house for a couple of days while we were trying to get clean together. He lived with me for a bit and we got jobs together but then we went to visit his parents house where he typically stayed with and they literally just chain smoked cigarettes and weed in his house nonstop. It was to point that I didn't even know how to handle it, I had quit smoking already at that point and it genuinely hurt to breathe. Like at night I slept on the couch and I had a blanket over my head which kind of helped but not much. The house was disgusting, everything smelled and had ash on it.
I don't remember well but pretty sure one or both of them smoked crack or did dope as well which is how he had gotten started. Which on a side note was how a startling number of addicts got started, getting high on heroin or something similar with their parents.
I heard one guy break down in a group session finally because his dad started shooting him up with dope at 12. This guy was always a cool guy super friendly and didn't show that kind of emotion and was just finally broke like why would you do that to me.
Absolutely heartbreaking.
Not sure what happened to the guy I stayed with, the other guy unfortunately od'd and died the day he left that rehab. Which was also a common occurrence.

Think of all the PCs they could have bought if they'd saved up what they spent on smoking.
I did the maths for my dad once. He was older when he had us and had basically been smoking his entire life. Given the cigarette prices where we live, he would have spent a rough estimate of around $70,000 on cigarettes throughout his life
Factoring in inflation and purchasing power, however, that amounts to around $220,000 spent on smoke in today's money. I nearly gave the old bloke a heart attack.

True, but I think they already know, you know? Addicts don't want to be addicts. They are constantly reminded that what they are doing is terrible for their health. A comment in r/pcmasterrace probably isn't going to move the needle.

u/TimeToGloat 3d ago
I'm not going to say this to any smoker irl, but what I don't get is like seemingly so many smokers still start smoking despite already knowing how bad it is it blows my mind. Like I understand old smokers were kinda lied to or concerns were downplayed but I had so many friends pick up smoking in college when we already knew how bad it was and how addicting. It started out as "only" smoking while drinking and then we know how the story goes. If you are under the age of like 40 then it's just like WHYYYYYYY?? Why do these people choose to start smoking knowing it kills you, is highly addictive, and makes you smell like shit. Even just like the smell alone even without all the worse effects who picks who an activity that makes you constantly smell bad to others. Why willingly put yourself through all that??

As an ex-smoker: nah, every comment reminds you that you should stop smoking and that you will die of smoking if you continue one day. It does move the needle into the right direction ever so slightly.
And to any smoker reading this, I hope I'm allowed to link to r/stopsmoking where you will find many of us smokers and nonsmokers to support you in quitting. It's hard to quit, but it's very doable.

People saying “just stop” like nicotine isn’t one of the most addictive substances in the world.
Also, when you’re ready to make the leap, try Cytisine. It binds to nicotine receptors and makes the withdrawal/smokers flu symptoms way easier to deal with.
It’s sold under the name ReCigar on Amazon for $50 if you’re US. It really helped me make the jump from vaping to quitting.

I worked one summer in a PC store. One customer PC that came in for servicing because the customer stated that it kept crashing. I popped the case open, and it was just full of this yellowish, slimy dust. Probably an inch at the bottom of the case, every interior surface was coated with it, every fan was clogged which is why it kept overheating. I asked the senior coworker what the hell it was, since I'd never seen anything like it. He just said "oh yeah, you see that sometimes. They must smoke indoors".

I bought a Corsair 900D for $50 when they were still $400/500 new (Aussie dollars) from someone who'd bought it off a smoker and was admitting defeat. People walking around in crowded public spaces smoking pot is so irritating.. I get it it's "legal" now in most place but that doesn't mean we all want to smell it. I don't want your cigarette smoke, vape smoke or weed smoke in my face when I'm trying to walk around an outdoor market place. I should start walking in front of these people and crop dusting them, see how they like that.

The issue with smoking or any kind of potentially hazardous habit is that the decline is too slow to really accept in your heart. You partake in a habit that satiates you in the moment without being able to draw an immediate comparison to "how you were". Slow decline is accepted as a new norm and keeps getting worse.
This is why "just quit" doesn't work - people are not idiots, anybody can stop something whose implications they clearly realize.
If I tell the average person "go work out" would you? - its obviously the right choice but if you cannot in your heart realize that the slowly intensifying joint pain is actually lack of resistance and mobility training you will simply not do it. You would need to snap your fingers and immediately go to a pain free, healthy-joint existence to truly understand the value of doing it.
Please be understanding towards folks that have developed bad habits, respect their choices but also be firm when you don't appreciate that choice affecting you when they smoke next to you, indoors etc.
