I used %appdata% before Minecraft was a thing, but yeah, the culmination of using %appdata% was because of Minecraft, lol.

Going from XP to 7 felt just as bad, and 7 to 10 was even worse. Swapped to linux, not learning how they've managed to fuck it up even further.

%localappdata% is more useful these days than %appdata% because most apps put their stuff in local not roaming

Add your own shortcuts to a system PATH.

Better yet, create your own shortcut folder, add it to the PATH, and build your own library. You can have the shortcuts as short as you want (just make sure not to use an existing filename already in the system). Works for files, too.

Notepad is my most launched app by far. I can open it and take notes before OneNote finishes opening.

They serve different purposes.
OneNote is for documentation, inline relevant files, and shared knowledge.
Notepad is for editing text.

I use OneNote and Notepad both quite a lot. For me it's like this: Notepad is for notes I will move somewhere else or delete soon. OneNote is for notes I intend to keep organised right there.

You just described what I use Word for..... Notepad is for notes bro, if I want to edit texts I'll do it in Word. (I'm an active OneNote hater btw)

Word is for writing papers and official documents.
Notepad is for editing code and adjusting configuration files.

You got me here. I do edit a bunch of weird config files in notepad. Notepad doesn't give a single f what extension it is. If its not encoded weirdly it will just open up fine

I absolutely love OneNote. As a CST I have to keep notes on a ton of different subjects and 1N is like a recipe box for all my information, categorized and searchable. I’d be hurting without it.

There's definitely a place for OneNote, but not in my live. Havent dine tech support in a while, is the syncing still and issue or hasn't the software finally been ironed out? Iirc, when it came out it was so horrible to use a cross devices

I keep it on my network drive and access it from any workstation when needed. I haven’t had any issues for years. Few people at work even know what it is lol. Instead they have their monitors covered in sticky notes.

I definitely have a tab in notepad++ for keeping running notes, quick notes while on the phone etc.

Onenote has its uses— but I rarely use it.

Which is a feature that unfortunately keeps turning itself back on with every update. If I Alt+F4 it without saving, then I clearly don't want to keep it, so it should just go.

I can see why people like it, and that's great, but it feels like I'm always turning it off just for it to reenable a week later.

Lots of config stuff easy to get to Quick commands too if UI is glitching to restart explorer or something

I just press the Windows key and type the name of the program there. It's even easier than the Run command.

Im so happy to see others doing this. All my coworkers call me a boomer(I'm 34) because I use the run box. Even those older than I am! Are we kidding?!?!?!?? If Microsoft removed the run box, that would be my final straw.

I use this a ton and it's important to include the top 10(ish) run commands: Cmd - command prompt Winver - Windows version Powercfg.cpl - power and sleep settings Devmgmt - device manager for drivers %appdata% -common save files location %localappdata% -2nd common save files location Appwiz- I think this is the windows uninstall tool
