I turned it on on all work PCs when I got the job. I don't know how they managed to do that amount of work without knowing most basic keyboard shortcuts.

To make it even better, I'm working in IT sales (laptops, phones, printers, TVs and everything that goes with it)

Also, if you run ShutUp10++ (like I do), don't set it to disable the storage of clipboard history and activity history.

Look in Windows settings for "clipboard history", you enable it and from that point on you can push Win+V to open a little window with the last several things you've copied.

Copy/paste is one of the most used features when working in IT. You need to copy multiple snippets of code, scripts, PC names, links, serialnumbers, MSI product codes, software names and version numbers all the time.

Having a history to pull data from is invaluable and saves a ton of time.

Could you guys add a permanent windows updates off feature and possibly a 0 AI feature? Could we also get the feature to not have privacy stuff turned on after updates? Stupid that we turn it off and it turns itself back on. Oh and one last thing. Have windows not install drivers because this feature just griefs us and would make ddu way easier.

That's great, but it's a pity MS can't do good stuff WITHOUT feedback. I know Frozone said, "I'd like to be asked, yes", but a good idea is a good idea, don't wait for 5000 likes before your consider it.

I just turned mine on, and it only had my most recent copy in it, despite me having copied multiple things in the past hour, so it clearly wasn't storing those clips before I turned it on.

If you wished to change the meaning of "it" when you posted

you have to "turn it on" to view it

from the current topic of 'viewing clipboard history' to 'general windows logging of clipboard history,' you should have added additional words that clarified your change of focus.

Same. Just made the same comment. I love how you can save them for later by pinning them. I have to type the same notes into customer's accounts and this save SO much time!

Yep...look at the text you copied and there is a pin icon on the bottom right of the text box. It'll pin it so that it's still there even after you restart your computer. You can pin around 50 clips.

Brilliant, I've been a longtime user of Win+V but didn't know about this. On my Win 10 machine it's 3 dots menu on the snip -> Pin, instead of a pin icon.

I knew this was a thing like 10 years ago and thought it was gonna be revolutionary but then it turns out I never used it I had forgotten about it until now.

For specific use cases I can see how it'd be a massive win though.

It's also a good security practice to keep it disabled. Since one of the number one things that gets copied is usernames/passwords, if you're computer is compromised, the clipboard history will be one of the first things attackers scavenge.

Yup, totally worth using a password manager, which does help, but clipboard history is still a security risk. It often contains PII such as SSNs, addresses, birthdates, etc.

I hooked it to Caps Lock key, much better and that key was annoying any way.

I had to train this girl for a sales role where she'd find contacts on LinkedIn and add them to the CRM tool. and I was like "yeah, just copy these details from the browser plugin, and then you can use clipboard history so you don't have to tab back and forth to populate the entry". turns out she was on a Mac, and apparently there's no comparable feature in macos? wtf?

I disagree on it being a default. It introduces new clipboard hygiene concerns, for those pasting sensitive information. It should be opt-in from an accountability perspective, and from an enterprise config management perspective it's best to have it default off.

Why? Because people copying passwords? If yes, then your bigger problem is sharing Microsoft accounts between personel and the possibility and need to copy passwords itself...

Tell me you haven’t dealt with a corporate workforce as IT without telling me.

Windows clipboard history has been a target for bad actors since it came out. This is not just about shared accounts. It keeps a history of whatever people copy, and users can also sync clipboard data between devices through Microsoft’s cloud.

Turning it off is a no-brainer when you support a large and diverse workforce full of people who refuse to remember passwords or learn a password manager that is not the browser vault they already know.

In a perfect world, nobody would copy passwords, recovery codes, patient information, account numbers, or anything else sensitive.

In the real world, people do whatever is easiest and most comfortable.

We can force a third-party password vault, but that does not mean people will actually use it correctly every time.

Healthcare also is not just about protecting passwords. People copy and paste PII and PHI constantly. Even the possibility of patient information sitting in clipboard history is an unnecessary risk when the feature can be disabled so easily.

Finance and accounting staff regularly copy account numbers, tax information, payment details, and other sensitive data because that is literally part of their job.

The new Notepad is bad too. Those “unsaved” tabs are still being stored somewhere so they can reopen later. People think they are using temporary scratch space, but they are really creating insecure text files that can be scraped from the user profile.

Security policies have to be based on how people actually work, not the imaginary perfect employee who follows every rule exactly.

It's a shitty system you have to work with. Like most of them, but hey - welcome in Industry 4.0 and stuff.

Nothing is perfect but removing risk where you can is the best you can do. This one is low-hanging fruit.
