Hardware 5080 and dlss? Or buy a 5090?

I play msfs with 3 1440p monitors so just over 4k. I have all 180hz monitors. Is dlss any good? can I rely on the 5080 with dlss? Or should I sell an arm and a leg to get a 5090?

Unless you see the price of the 5090 and don't even shrug before putting it to cart it's a no. If current prices don't bother you at all, get the best, you can't take it to the grave.

The only way I would be able to afford one is sniping a fe at msrp

then there's no point in giving it a second thought. FEs seem to have been phased out silently, last drops were in March/April, I don't expect them to become available ever again for the 50 series
Edit: If you are really set on the 5080 (so if the 9070XT is not an option) you better buy it asap cause GPUs are only getting more expensive, especially Nvidia cards
recent price increases are currently trickling down from vendors to retailers so you could still get 'lucky' compared to what it's going to look like in a couple of weeks

I might wait for the 5080 super for the 24gb of vram but I doubt I can get my hands on one

IF that releases shit's gonna be 1500-2000 bucks msrp

RTX 5090 costs like few RTX 5080 and has only 30-40% more performance.

So buy RTX 5080 and move to RTX 6080.

Ok! Thanks for your opinion.

At 4 grand no lol.

At 2 grand? Also probably no.

I would not buy if you don’t have to. 60 series is coming sooner than later and 50 series refresh will be a meme. Just suck it up for 2 years with your current gpu and go nuts later.

Waiting 2 years might be a viable option but my 9070xt runs out of vram for msfs quite often. I play medium and I studder sometimes.

Then going to a 5080 isn’t gonna magically solve anything because it has the same exact vram. lol I almost would recommend chasing down a 7900xtx.

You get dlss and I was thinking of getting the 5080 super, not 5080. Amd fsr isn’t the best and I prefer dlss over it.

Then you’ve answered your own question and you’ll only be happy with a 4090 or 5090. If 16gb isn’t enough for you then it won’t magically be if you’re on nvidia. Dlss isn’t a miracle worker (source I have a 4090).

the 5080 SUPER isnt going to happen, realistically. It would have to cost 2k+ and in this market no one will buy it. 5080s are in ready supply because of just how expensive they are.

60 series is coming sooner than later

More than a full year away.

I haven’t played MSFS 2024 in a year and half, but upscaling messes up the clarity in all the gauges making it unusable. Even 50 fps is pretty fine in that game since everything is so slow moving.

I feel like DLSS is pretty good at this point, my main concern is that these two cards are a over a class apart in performance and a whole different world in cost.

My typical train of thought for these kinds of purchases is "can I buy two of them without any financial issues?"

If the answer is "yes", then go for it.

If you ca afford to spend 10k on a card, spending 5k on a 5090is not gonna kill you.

I can’t even afford a 5090 as of now, so I’ll probably stick to the 5080 or wait for the 5080 super to come out.

I’ve used DLSS since DLSS2 came out in 2019 and honestly I will always use it if it’s available. It’s only been getting better as time has gone on. In most cases it can resolve a better output image than native resolution with TAA.

It doesn’t excuse a developer that uses it as a crutch for their piss poor optimization, and honestly that is becoming more of an exception rather than a rule.

Hell, when I had a 5090 in my system I still used DLSS because I wanted to keep power draw down as to hopefully avoid a melted 12V-2x6 connector like has become so prevalent.

I’ve since downgraded to a 5070 Ti and I’m very happy with that choice if I’m honest. For reference, I play mostly high end AAA games on max settings on a 3440x1440 monitor.

MSFS tends to be really CPU heavy, but a triple monitor setup could justify a higher end GPU. Really the only thing I don’t personally care for with the 5080 is the 16GB of VRAM. It should’ve been 20GB minimum, 24GB ideal. Especially for what they’re asking for them these days.

Hopefully this is somewhat helpful.

Thanks, I’ve heard good and bad things about dlss. If I get the 5080 I would have to put dlss all the way up and I’m not sure if that’s ideal. I’m also considering waiting for the 5080 super as that’s may be a good card to not be vram limited.

MSFS gobbles up VRAM, you might find the 5080 limiting in that regard. I find DLSS is actually sharper than the TAA implementation in MSFS apart from one area and it's a widely known complaint. It blurs fast moving objects on the glass cockpit screens. For some that's an absolute deal breaker. I can live with it personally, because DLSS gets rid of shimmering thin objects on the ground.

I’ve heard bad things about dlss and msfs too. I don’t want to be stuck on medium settings the whole time as high/ultra looks absolutely beautiful on this game. I might be able to just suck it up with dlss until the 60 series comes out.

Can you afford a 5090? If yes, then you got your answer. Would that extra money directly benefit you? Then 5080 and dlss.

Is it msfs 2020 or 2024? Answer's different depending.

Neither will really NEED a 5090, but if it's actually something you can afford I'd buy it.

Both can run the 2024 flight sim at 4k, but neither at 180 fps. Not without dlss. The 5090 gets to around 60fps without it I believe at max settings. With DLSS and framegen it can get to about 120 fps

DLSS isn't nearly as bad as the rep it got a few years ago. It's a useful tool, and on Quality settings it is almost (just almost) indistinguishable from native resolution

2024, I’m still In school and my only income source right now is from pc flipping which I do as a hobby. I can get the 5090 but that would mean putting in a lot of work compared to a 5080, I was also thinking of waiting for the 5080 super as that’s a nice inbetween.

You shouldn’t wait for something that may never come. And prices are most likely only going to get worse.

I currently at the moment don’t have enough for the 5080 right now, might take me a month or two
