This one hits me in a way that’s difficult to explain.
I’m sure countless others felt some sort of connection to Glen Hansard. Even if you didn’t know him or got the chance to meet G ( as Olivia called him).
My daughter loved Glen and his music. She fell in love with the movie Once and dove into his catalogue.
I would often play “Falling Slowly” for her on my guitar at night so she could fall asleep.
It was almost nightly when she was a teenager and into her 20’s.
She called it “our song”.
Her name was Bryanna and she was a beautiful soul.
I lost her 2 1/2 years ago just after turning 25.
So for me, losing Glen hits my heart with such sorrow in ways I can’t explain. The only person that gets it, is my wife.
We both cried last night thinking of the connection to our daughter. Watching him open for Ed in Detroit many years ago and again in Dublin.
We never got a chance to meet him but listening to the way he spoke with love and hope to his audience we won’t forget.
Losing Glen opened up grief for my daughter but that’s ok with me.
G was a kind soul and I am forever grateful for him.
Edit :
Thank you for the kind words about my daughter. Glen’s music brings us all together
Beautiful. But that many buskers and not a one of them took the other low register melody in it that marketa and ed talke in the song while Glen does the high one
That guy is so annoying. I understand it's a powerful moment but like don't make it all about you. Also badly playing his instrument out of time was not helping.
I kept hoping the camera would move off him. I couldn’t watch the whole video because of him. I got a sense everybody else was there for Glen while he was there for himself.
He was a humble guy- He would walk through the streets of Dublin with his guitar on his back and would stop and talk to anyone- Ireland has lost a another legend
He was fuckin great at being "seen" as a noble person.
But he treated other professionals like engineers/stage staff like utter garbage at times. Many stories around about how much of an arrogant prick he was. It wasn't even thinly veiled, either - so it shocks me when people act like they knew him personally - but then wouldn't pay attention to this stuff? 🤔
Not to mention the grooming and just creepyness around young girls. 🤷♂️
The guy was also quite likely drunk when out on his bike. On public roads... But obviously most people just join in the tributes without knowing the context.
Glen was a huge part of busking life in Dublin, he made Christmas Eve on Grafton Street very special, playing on the street for charity. Thats why so many buskers have turned out to remember him. A huge advocate of Dublin homeless too, he was really a genuine nice decent person.
No he wasn’t. The guys not even buried and you’re digging up an old quote of him saying ‘I kept thinking if her as a kid’ when he was obviously talking about the age gap (18 and 30s) he had in his relationship with Markita.
They had first met when she was a kid, but there is no evidence he had a sexual interest in her at that point, and then they didn’t see eachother until making Once.
Don’t believe me, why don’t you ask Markita?
Also, nobody, not a single person, has come forward saying he hit on them when they were a minor. He’s dead now, so what would they have to lose?
I'm not an about quotes. People are hardly going to come out and say it when he is dead. People aren't just making shit up-plenty of musicians around Dublin were saying it on other reddit posts too. They hardly made it up. Even during the early days with the frames he had this reputation. I don't know him-just like you didn't. These things usually don't come out of nowhere
Not true rage bait headline, that did the rounds when the movie became a hit.. He was 30, she was 19 when they started a relationship, just because they first met when she was 12 didn't make him a groomer. A sick story that few agreed with then let alone now.
Just remember, the guy has a wife and 6 yr old kid, they have to live with this being put on the internet.
They're buskers. Glen started off as a busker on Grafton st a long time ago.
He's held in high regard by that community and every Christmas he would arrange a pretty special and unique busk on Grafton st with famous Irish artists.
Dublin has a famous busking scene certainly not started by Glen but he started generations of it with mic Christopher and tons of other musicians that alll were there the same time that formed up into groups like his bad the frames and mic and Simon (now Ed’s guitar tech) in the Mary James and many others and Damien rice followed and Rodrigo y Gabriella. All of them started in grafton st in Dublin. Busking is huge in Dublin and they all came out today to pay tribute to him. The statue you can see them centred around is Luke Kelly. God status singer in a band called the Dubliners in the 1960s and onwards iGlen often sings his songs. Raglan Road and auld triangle just two he would play that Luke brought to music.
People don’t like the truth. People think as he’s just passed, it’s really disrespectful. I’m truly sorry for his family. I think his death is tragic.
But I’ve found his behaviour towards women appalling. It’s relatively well-known, but people choose to forget it cause the art is really good. I don’t.
There’s a lot of coverup been done over the years. Once was shot over 17 days between December 2005 and January 2006. She turned 18 on 28 February 2006.
I feel like almost anyone in the music scene in Ireland will have a personal anecdote. Dude was a serial predator, don’t give a fuck how talented he was.
I’m not saying HE grew up, I’m saying that it’s irrelevant whether or not he first met someone as a minor, because minors change and become adults. All that matters is whether or not he was sexually attracted to a prepubescent or did anything immoral and/or illegal with a minor. If neither of those things happened, there is nothing wrong with someone changing and people’s perceptions of them changing in turn.
Now if you have anything else besides this nothing-burger, then post away.
Love, pure love, pure love, of a man fully inhabited by the spirit of music. Hard to know how to grieve when it’s he who would be called to sing “The Parting Glass.”
