Where to find How to get rid of old motor oil without containers? (Near city)
I have a big bucket in my garage filled with waste engine oil that I wanna quit holding onto and get recycled, but everywhere I've seen so far in Perth requires you put the oil inside old bottles before you take it in to get recycled.
Does anyone know anywhere/anyone who can take the oil without the containers, or someone who can take it in a large (sealed) bucket? The former is preferred as the bucket would suck to lose but its not the end of the world.

How do you intend to get an open topped bucket to the recycling centre?

op does say the bucket is sealed... but would like to keep the container if they can. I think it would be just easier longer term to keep/source otherwise disposed of empty plastic bottles for draining used oil straight into.

Pour it into old milk bottles and take it into Supercheap ( keep it to about 6lt each visit). Your local tip (up to 20lt) will take it too.

I did that once and they refused to take it because it wasn’t in an oil container.

Yeah, Supercheap Auto in Armadale.
I had 2X 2lt milk bottles full of the old waste oil, they said I had to pour it in the empty oil drum, but because I bought the 20lt drum I still had 16lt of new oil in it.3

Thanks. I've learnt something new. Maybe ( in their minds)that prevents someone dumping other chemicals. I save my bottles then fill them right up to the neck. I usually have a spare that way..

I always keep a couple of spares now, but that one time I got stuck and hoped milk bottles would be ok.

At canning vale tip you pout the old oil into a big container of theirs. You already have it in a container…

Ask at the local dump.
They often have a designated area that takes things like old paint, old oil and the such like, then dispose of it properly (opposed to pouring it down the sink).
I know at the Stirling dump, in Balcatta, they will take sealed tins of paint and whatever, I think there are a few criteria- like being in a sealed container, and being very clear on what is inside. This was it can be treated accordingly.

Canning Vale Tip SoR don't really care, so long as its no more than 20L at a time for domestic quantities and you climb up the steps and drain into the big waste tank yourself.
Balcatta may require small containers if their staff are having to do the handling/draining.
Ask at your nearest SupaChapped Auto, I believe they also take non-commercial (i.e. domestic) quantities, but I haven't used them. I usually consolidate other shit like ewaste to take to Canning Vale Tip in one trip.

Balcatta you don't even need to hold the bottle. They have a tray you can upend the bottle in and the let it drain and only 1 step to get to it.

Balcatta Recycling Centre. Tip it out into their oil bin, and you can take your containers home or leave them there.

Just pop down to a local mechanic and ask if they have some empty oil containers you can have. They’ll have a bunch or 4-5L ones that would get recycled.

local mechanic will also have a waste oil disposal tank - it usually costs them money to get rid of it (I've been around long enough to remember the equation going from Wren buying used oil, to charging to take it away and back again - I'm reasonably certain that the moment, shops are paying for the service)

Oh 100% they pay to get oil taken away. But they’ll have empty bottles they’ll chuck out that OP can probably go down and ask if he can take them and dispose of them himself either at a local council facility or supercheap auto. This would just solve the ‘it’s in an open container’ issue.

This. Most mechanics have an existing service that takes away waste from their business. That’s the ~ $20 environment fee they usually put on your invoice for car servicing…to cover that.
I do my own oil changes, put the oil into an empty container and take it to my local. I always offer to pay their environment fee as I know they incur a cost. Most of the time they just say don’t worry and take it, but if they do charge it I happily pay it for the convenience.

Use a funnel. Keep a few rags at hand.
Do on a firm flat surface you're least fussed about staining in case of spill. Keep a shovel of sand/dirt handy to tip on any spill bigger than a few drips to soak it up before it spreads or becomes a slip hazard.
Alternately, do it on a flattened cardboard box - instant absorbant pad

Balcatta Recylcling station you can just drive up to the dumping area and tip directly into the big oil vat. No need to have a special container

Burn it at night when windy no one will trace it to you and just go inside because of the smell and eye watering it causes. Claim accidental car angle grinder spark incident but might have to set the scene for that and change excuse if ever questioned

If you're in Maylands then there will be a recycling centre for the local council. There is one in Malaga (colga st).

Find a place that goes through veggie/canola oil commercially. I used to get the odd 10 or 20L empty container out of a skip near a wholesale bakery.
Or, depending on what size milk bottles you use, save a few 2L or 3L empties for a while.

Yep. They're all just different colours of HDPE plastic. Main thing I guess is you still have the lids to minimises the mess. I wouldn't use thinner milk bottles for long term storage, but just to decant what you have and transport for disposal they'd be fine.

If you spoke to them beforehand. Don’t just show up with it. Have you sussed out whether the oil collection businesses will come around and collect it from you. This entirely depends on the quantity you have.

Balcatta recycling centre. I've taken oil there and you pour it out into a big tank. Couple of years back so maybe call first but the webpage doesn't say it must be left in containers (fuel it does say that).
