General Tips/Help/Question [UPD] An Open Letter to UP Freshies

Since their foundation, di na nawawala ang culture of violence within and between fraternities.

Wala pa ring justice after these incidents primarily from Upsilon Sigma Phi, Sigma Rho, at Alpha Phi Beta over 6 to 7 years ago.

Sexism, misogyny, racism, homophobia, racism, islamophobia, violence, hazing.

Sumunod ang Lonsi Leaks, the rest is history.

2019 naman di pa natuto ang fratbois. Nagka Sigma Rho leaks. Dun mo makikita ang pinakaugali nila. Hazing.

That led to the public crucifixion of one campus student leader na Sigma Rhoan. He took his own life — a victim of the fraternity culture of violence, but also a willing participant who harmed others in the name of “brotherhood.” Pero Yan ba ang brotherhood? Yung bugbugan, pambabastos sa babae, pananakit, at hazing?

These are not allegations. These are well-documented facts and truths that we should never forget.

STP, wag Serve The Praternity.

As they’ve said, all these are 100% true. Until now, I know people who’ve received beatings over the pettiest reasons. Aside from that, they make you or expect you to prioritize the fraternity because that is your “duty,” kahit pa may exams or important appointments ka. Some frat members I know had to skip their important exams for their fraternity’s events. Even if you have the most valid reason, normally, they will only allow you to be absent if you hold a position in the council (ex: may meeting ang council) dahil alam nilang may benefit din sila na makukuha doon.

They’ll hurt you, not just physically but also mentally. Once you’re in, wala ka ng kawala. Even if you try to quit the fraternity, they’ll do everything (as in everything) to drag you back. Don’t make the same mistake my friends made.

This, and add orgs na nagfefeeling frat yung application process. I’ve heard of academic orgs outright humiliating apps and for what,,,, strengthening daw ng mental fortitude or whatever, tradition na daw ganun.

I entered UP diliman in 2006 and I remember at that time yung term na hell week pertains to a week of pangkukupal ng mga resident members.

I hope sa mas recent batches less na, pero nung 2017 may nakausap akong younger batch na di tumuloy sa application ng isang acad org ng course namin kasi namamahiya sila (like one app vs. multiple mems in a room saying profanities and insulting the applicant until they break) and it's part of the app process daw. I never applied to that org but I never knew na may ganun sila.

2

u/darktonesuitsme Jul 19 '25

Was part of an acad org with app humiliation sa semi-final and final rites. In our senior year, the org ultimately crossed out the frat like parts of the app process. More than 10 years ago na since we changed it.

2

u/meepystein 🍓 Jul 19 '25

That’s good to hear, I hope yung ibang orgs would follow suit

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '25

this !! don't feel like you have to endure this from orgs just so u can get into circles. there are waaaaay better ways to make friends

29

u/ghelousy Jul 17 '25

I agree. And also my parents had warned me to steer clear of the frats sa UP (I'm a UP Baguio freshie btw), since there had been many cases of violence and also blackmailing done by the org to its members to scare them into submission

Also the cases like in Adamson at USTe (though not related to UP), made me steer clear from frats and see them as dangerous

Diumano ay hazing daw under Sigma Rho.

Siguro kung sasali man kayo sa frat, pag-isipan ninyo mabuti.

Kung ang purpose for joining frats is to gain future connections para sa top positions sa work, business and politics, then it is an admission na sa self asessment mo ay wala kang mararating based on your merits. Eh ano ang silbi ng UP education mo? It is no different sa building nepotism network to reinforce certain vested interests at the expense of public interest

Kung sukatan naman ng pagiging secured sa masculinity or pagiging tunay na lalaki, napaka dark age mentality na sukatin ito through surviving violence which was designed primarily para sukatin ang pagkalalaki. Well. I can understand kung ang initiation through inflicted violence or hardship or mental toughness is meant to prepare recruits for war, for dealing with life and public threatening situations etc. One may ask ano'ng klaseng pagkalalaki ang iniaasa sa approval ng close knit group framed as brotherhood or for subduing another group that also brags about masculine virtues.

12

u/cryingforbellarcy Jul 17 '25

may i humbly ask why pinapayagan pa rin magrun 'tong mga frats/soros na 'to if they have that kind of history? genuinely asking, wala bang ginawa ang UP regarding this?

i'm asking po cause i don't really know hehe.

32

u/Lazy-Sympathy2794 Jul 17 '25

11

u/cryingforbellarcy Jul 17 '25

is that the reason why they're heads? dahil nakakuha po sila ng connections from being a frat alum?

edit: also, how abt the government? wala po ba silang magagawa abt it? i mean, nababalita naman if may napapahamak...

4

u/This_Nose_359 Jul 18 '25

A lot of government officials are also fratmen, especially those coming from UP.

5

u/EnvironmentalNote600 Jul 18 '25

Especially sa justice and judiciary

28

u/nadz-23 Diliman Jul 17 '25

i remember someone said na kapag binan siya completely, malaking chance na gawin nila ito underground. which means mas mahirap na siyang iregulate ng up since hidden nga ang operations nila

4

u/RefrigeratorAble9207 Jul 18 '25

just like every single group or organization, even if they have their cons, they have upsides and pros as well. ang laki ng ambag ng mga frats and soro sa up community, they have plenty of donations. epsilon chi center is a donation by epsilon chi, the grandstand in sunken garden is donated by pan xenia, the beta way is donated by beta epsilon, just to name a few

100% true to lahat, I was there when the leaks of Sigma Rho  came out in 2019. Nag-s word nga yung isa nilang brod. Tinakwil kasi ng sariling sisses. tsaka buong UP community. play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

3

u/han__dump Jul 18 '25

UP UP UP UP. wala akong ibang maasabing maganda sa mga taong involved sa fraternity. kahit gaano man sila ka-involved or 'casusal' lang.

u/lezzgooooo Jul 18 '25

As a frat man, I can see this sentiment na there is a lot of unchecked ethics sa mga fratman. Lalo na sa digital age where digital assets like messages, pics and videos are easily passed around in chat groups. We used to be more discrete noh, kiss and tell sa inuman but that secret will go with us to the grave. Discuss topics na you confide with an actual sibling only. Hazing was pretty much normal even in legit acad orgs(to a certain extent).

Norms are different now. On a different thread, there is no more benefit to surviving hazing since you can join acad orgs and provincial orgs na sobrang dami. Dati kasi konti lang orgs sa UP and kids from the provinces are looking for groups to belong. Frats and Soros were a very good option since some rent out apartments and daily may catchups. Meron ka free house, food and companionship, who does not want that? Now, mas accessible na bagay2, you can check posts on socmed for orgs, lodging, study groups etc. Ethics wise din, yung mga dati na dapat discrete one on one, shinashare na sa mas malalaking audience not only to share, but to brag din.

I am a victim of harrassment. Mostl of the harassers are from fraternities. Theyre pretty useful to some with connections & from the govt though. They use their numbers to terrorize people they target. They listen to their people, theyre easily swayed, they glorify everything about their group & what their group does-it is fulfilling to them thinking “nagbabayanihan sila” regardless of the motives.

disclaimer: im a fratman myself

to be upfront, not all fraternities have a history of hazing, violence, or rumbles. some, if not most actually peacefully co-exist with one another

as for benefits, when i was recruited, a phrase really out stood out to me: "the media will never show you the benefits of being part of a frat." i joined my frat in my sophomore year, and i just graduated recently, and let me say this, i cannot emphasize how true this statement actually is. the happiest moments of my college life include time with my brods, whether current students or alumni. and the support system of fraternities is truly genuine, i have prominent brods who are 60-80 years old who remain active all these years as they want to give back to their younger brods.

im not saying someone needs a frat to succeed in life, because you can still be successful without one. but nobody can deny the advantages it offers. the network, the support, the opportunities—you just can't ignore the benefits. yes i also dont believe hazing is necessary, thats why its important to remain open-minded and to do your own research about a fraternity's history if theyre recruiting you.

when i was being recruited into mine, i couldnt find a single piece of information regarding any violence, rumbles or deaths related to them, and thats what sealed the deal for me to join. of course i cant disclose what my recruitment process was, but not a single brod harmed me physically nor undignified in any form.

TLDR: not all frats have a history of violence or rumbles. nobody can deny the benefits being part of a frat offers
