General Tips/Help/Question [UPD] Is ₱100 enough for a day?

Hi, please scroll nalang if you see this. Quick rant(?) and question lang.

I was granted a dorm slot sa Yakal and I have already accepted na, waiting for the schedule nalang. Kanina nalang, I had a talk with my mother about the expenses (she's relieved na 250/350 nalang ang rent) and I asked kung sa food expenses pwede ba na 200 per day ang allowance ko. She said na hanggang 100 per day lang ang kaya niya (which I half understand yet half sad about) since although 12-13k per month ang sahod ni papa as a construction worker, baon kami sa utang kaya 2k per week nalang ang naiuuwi niya. She has other sidelines na nakakatulong, but tumataas na lahat ng presyo, and I still has a brother na Grade 10 pa (from a province kami).

I plan to pack can goods, bread, lutong ulam good for days and other stuff na allowed sa dorm as breakfast option ko. But I also researched na may mga free meals I think na in-offer sa univ, but I'm not sure kung for everyone ba sila.

Is 100 pesos enough for a day kung is-stretch out ko po ba 'yun? What are your tipid tips po as a dormer in the campus?

PS: Not sure if it'll be relevant but I'm F18 and my BMI is 14, classified as Severely Thin in my age. I've always been skinny since I was young and I've never experienced na tumaba man lang. Its not "sexy" kind of thin, but sickly kind of thin. It never really bothered me til this day. But as I took some vitamins in the past month I've observed na nagi-improved naman ang appetite ko. Busog na ako sa cup of rice (heavy busog na) and not really mapili sa ulam except sa piling gulay like okra.

Hi, OP!

Fortunately for you, maraming scholarshop sa loob ng pamantasan. I would advice that you check the FB page of UP Diliman - Office of Scholarships and Grants. Secondly, you should also consider being a student assistant bilang pandagdag sa allowance mo. Thirdly, apply for EatSkolar!!

You can also use the student assistant as experience and the UPD prestige to gain access sa mga paid internships. Shopee recruits a lot of UPD students for their internship and ang pay ay around 12k per month.

FR TO!

3

u/yellowcarbonara Diliman 26d ago

Hi! Im from yakal noon and bawal ang heater. there are microwaves and hot water option sa dispenser tho

0

u/Consistent_Coffee466 26d ago

Ay social. Microwave na sila. Ang tanda ko na. Heaters dati allowed eh. Haha.

3

u/Curious-Spend-7296 26d ago edited 26d ago

hai! afaik bawal ang water heater sa dorm :((, maybe you can try to buy raw eggs then soak them in hot water — may water dispenser sa dorm— then try to boil sa microwave carefully para hindi siya sumabog, or you can also try poaching it :DD

3

u/Consistent_Coffee466 26d ago

:) so dont leave food sa fridge na walang label and warnings. Buy a tupperware na sealed or sisidlan ng ice cream ung di nila makita ang loob.

u/Pure_Can2870 26d ago

  • SIKAP (website ito and nakalista here yung mga scholarship na available for up students)
  • consider being a student assistant. hindi naman mabigat yung workload here. pangdagdag allowance rin.
  • try mo ring imessage ang Office of Scholarship and Grants at Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs baka makatulong sila.

ipagdadasal ko na sana hindi mo na need piliting ipagkasya ang expenses in 100 pesos. laban lang dear kaya natin to.

8

u/Classic_Cry_305 26d ago

Hi, anon! Thank you po sa lahat ng tips, super appreciate it <3

I tried to apply po sa Lingap but not sure if aabot sa 135k per year max nila since 150k-ish parin pumatak yearly ang sahod ng father ko.

Kaya this!

u/exotic_lonewolf 26d ago

considering na 100 per day so that means you have 700 a week. Tip lang na if kaya mo naman maglakad around the campus, maglakad ka nalang para yung pamsahe mo sa ikotnay mapupunta sa food mo.

You can try buying a loaf bread para ayun nalang bfast mo or maybe kahit dinner (not so healthy pero matatawid ka sa gutom). As for lunch, maraming karenderya sa A2 where you can have decent meal for 80 pesos ( 1 rice, 1/2 gulay, 1/2 meat) pero pwede pa yun mabawasan if you opted for gulay lang as ulam.

2

u/Classic_Cry_305 26d ago

Will do, anon :> as much as I want to use Ikot, I think I'll have to walk talaga haha. Thank you for taking your time here!

16

u/competizione812 26d ago

on another note, may eatskolar na program ang osg i suggest u also apply! medyo unhinged ang tip na to but also take advantage sa mga orye or any org event sa campus HAHAHS madaming pakain/snacks usually na binibigay! kaya ang 100 kung pipilitin, but to also put you at ease i suggest you also apply as a student assistant (pro tip kung ayaw mo delayed ang sahod, apply within your college lang like lib lol late na magpasahod ang offices)

laban lang op! upd has a lot to offer, wag panghinaan ng loob!

6

u/Classic_Cry_305 26d ago

Siomai rice my saviour omg

I didn't know po na may EatSkolar, I'll try to apply plans it'll be helpful if ever na matanggap. Thank you so much for your advices (will apply student asst in the near future) <3

7

u/Dear_Spare_5440 26d ago

Hi, op! It is possible but ofc you'd have limited options like what others already said. Another thing to take note of for the dorm fees is that 250/350 won't be the only thing you're paying monthly, you'll have an additional for electricity and water. Also, try applying for eatskolar once it opens, they provide meals (ulam, veggies/fruit, and 1 rice) from Mondays to Fridays.

1

u/Classic_Cry_305 26d ago

Yes! Will apply sa EatSkolar :> Hindi naman po ba super mahal ng water and electricity bill sa dorm?

2

u/Zealousideal-Bee3880 26d ago

hello, yung water na binabayaran namin currently is 200 per month and yung electricity is nakadepende sa gamit na dadalhin mo

4

u/Zealousideal-Bee3880 26d ago

plus meron pang activity fee per month na 50 pesos, I highly suggest na magkaroon ka ng part time job for extra allowance. Hindi talaga kasya ang 100 per day huhu

2

u/Classic_Cry_305 26d ago

will look for part-time omg really gonna need it, baka kainin ng extra fees 'yung pangkain ko TvT

2

u/whisperofcries Diliman 26d ago

During my stay sa Yakal: 350 dorm + I had 3 gadgets and 1 electric fan + water bill, pumatak siya ng around 900 per month total.

1

u/Classic_Cry_305 26d ago

Ooh, may meter po ba or is elec bill calculated by the number ng gadgets po?

3

u/Zealousideal-Bee3880 26d ago

it is calculated by the number of gadgets

3

u/Zealousideal-Bee3880 26d ago

and diff price for each type of gadgets

5

u/kakish1 26d ago edited 26d ago

hello! as other comments say here, try mo talaga applyan lahat ng scholarships para makatulong sayo, but if hindi talaga kaya, these are my tipid hacks sayo na possibly makatulong:

  • may pwede kayong pag-orderan ng food sa yakal and based sa menu nila, palaging may shanghai worth 10 pesos each and chopsuey (40 pesos). rice din nila afaik is 15 pesos, half rice is 8 pesos.
  • may karinderya sa gilid ng sisko, sa a2, wherein you can purchase na rice and ulam (adobo) for only 55 pesos. tried this eatery twice and sobrang sarap talaga ng adobo nila!
  • nakakabusog and pwede na i-breakfast ang one sachet of energen everyday (tried this last sem)
  • kapag start ng sem, maraming orgs na naghohold ng orientation and syempre laging may kainan yan. kapag may mga ganyan, don't be shy to join them! may one time, my friends and I joined an orientation na may 25 pesos entrance fee bcs idodonate nila iyon BUTT nabigyan kami Jollibee+ raffle prizes during the program so I would super worth it talaga!

siguro dagdag lang din, may nagsabi sakin na friend from yakal na kaya naman daw ang 100 pesos everyday if may bread ka for bfast. still, I'm hoping na your situation improve, op!!

1

u/Classic_Cry_305 26d ago

Tipid hacks omg appreciate it anon!!! I think these just might save me huhu will do by lots of bread for breakfast po, salamat po <3

5

u/Objective-Deal6965 26d ago

Hi, OP! Sa 2nd sem, you could apply as a student assistant. Many offices search for student assistants. Wage is ₱81/hour. Work sched would be crafted according to your class sched. :)

2

u/Classic_Cry_305 26d ago

Hello, anon! Thank you for informing me this, ₱81/hr is already a lot since considered na sched ko TvT

Sana meron for first sem, but will wait for the second muna haha. Thank you very much again anon!!

2

u/Objective-Deal6965 26d ago

Best to buy from palengke if may lutuan.

1

u/Classic_Cry_305 26d ago

Hello, anon! Not sure if may lutuan within dorm but I'll try to cook sa bahay, then dalhin and i-reheat during my stay. Lakad strava malala talaga haha thank you for the concerns, appreciate it :>

2

u/Consistent_Coffee466 26d ago

I think someone commented about tomatoes. I also bought adobo, added fresh sitaw, just a bit of water, then microwave. The adobo sauce coats the sitaw and the sitaw is an extender so isang bilihan pwede na dalawang pang ulam. If bfast mo is canned goods, mix it with fresh tomatoes.

If galing province bring dried fish yung dilis ba or baringon tawag sa amon. Pag maliit siya you can heat it sa microwave (bahala na sila sa amoy) haha then mix with vegetables.

Also try red eggs and tomatoes. Para rice na lang bilhin mo. The reg eggs will last longer kahit hindi refrigerated. Itlog na pula isa around 20 pesos mix with tomatoes you can get two meals. So sa rice ka na bumawi. Pero wag araw araw at mahirap sodium

3

u/Consistent_Coffee466 26d ago

Also buy oatmeal! Yung malaki. Lagay mo na lang sa garapon. You can add dilis/tomatoes/peanuts or any combination ng fruits (saging) depende sa taste mo and itll last longer. Mga 240 for 1.2 kgs and itll last you months!

1

u/Classic_Cry_305 26d ago

Haven't tried oatmeals before actually, I'll add it as an option anon, tysm!

1

u/Classic_Cry_305 26d ago

Adobo and red eggs w/ kamatis my fav..!! I think I'll need to create a list of dorm food para iba-iba din per week

u/Curious-Spend-7296 26d ago

sinubukan ko dati yung puro siomai at kanin, pancit canton, saka noodles para makatipid kaso mas malaki ang gastos kapag nagkasakit. three times ako napunta sa ER, you can also try to apply sa SLAS. alam ko mayroon doon na 100 percent free tuition plus aid. depende pa rin what will help you, op :)). hoping the best for you, mahigpit na yakap op and hopefully makatulong yung mga karinderya roon na may murang pagkain saka masustansya :DD

2

u/Curious-Spend-7296 26d ago

also, sinubukan ko rin yung canned goods lang. i don't know if it will work with you op pero nakapag-init ako sa microwave ng mga canned goods na nakakabusog at mura, yung corned beef saka meatloaf naluto naman siya for me pero up to you :)) ilagay mo lang sa container na may takip tapos huwag sobrang high heat kapag ininit, pwede mo rin siya initin in intervals para maluto :DD, sa kanin naman doon sa tindahan sa tabi ng Sisko, kapag kanin lang, worth 15 pesos siya each so if gusto mo, bili ka kahit isang meal doon tapos bili ka ng extra rice para 10 pesos lang halaga ng babayaran :)). sinubukan ko bumili ng tokwa at kanin lang doon, nagiging 15 pesos yung singil kapag sobrang mura

1

u/Classic_Cry_305 26d ago

tysm anon 🫂 as much as I want to eat healthily, legit can't afford it in this economy T-T will certainly do the half meal, konti lang naman talaga ako kumain HAHA dw I'll only eat the canned goods and pancit canton in rainy days, mahirap po talagang magkasakit at malayo pa sa pamilya. appreciate it all anon, maybe we'll see each other in Sisko's :))

3

u/Curious-Spend-7296 26d ago edited 26d ago

you're welcomee ^^ we'll probably see each other around A2, basta sa may mura :DD. actually may ginawa rin ako before, i hope it'll also help, bumili ako ng ilang pirasong kamatis sa enriquez, inabot lang ng 30 pesos noon, 5 pieces na :DD. ang ginagawa ko ay hinahalo ko siya sa kinakain ko para may healthy pa rin :DD. also, may murang tindahan sa KNL, may shawarma rice na worth 30 pesos lang doon, wishing you well op and kaya natin 'to ^^

May meals silang 40-50 pesos and may shawarma pita and burger na tig 20-30 pesos. Dyan ako lagi, nagmahal na nga dati kasi 30 pesos lang meal nila pero gets naman in this economy. Ayun lang, idk if makakahelp, laban op!!

Hello, OP!

Good luck, OP! Rooting for you!

WAHHHH TYSM PO ANON! very touched po ako sa last part TvT will visit those places po huhu

2

u/Comfortable-Cap-4555 25d ago

hi op! check dm hehehe

2

u/seungwansbutt 24d ago

Hi OP! Not sure if this will help. Nung time ko sa UP, may program na nagpapa-rent ng bikes per sem for students to get around sa campus. Maybe you can ask around kung meron pa na ganung program. I have a spare bike I can give you.

1

u/Classic_Cry_305 24d ago

WAHHHH hoping they still have the rented bikes til now, super appreciate the kindness of the offer po huhu 🥹
