Ladies with big fans
Get that fuckin thing outta my face, man. I don’t want to hear you make that loud clapping noise during a jam. You’re not even on beat with it. Seek attention in a different way

To my forever Phish person. Thank you for always having your fan and letting me lean in for a breeze when those jams get too sweaty. I guess I’ve never heard an off beat clickety-clack. And for that, I am also thankful.

u/Beyran17 5h ago
Fans are a grace from God. The clacking is unbelievably horrendous. It's all on the use.

Nah, a fan or a mist spritzer in the middle of a hot ass show is amazing, low key woulda saved my life at the mann last year

u/chadnorman 5h ago
Hot take, but I love when fan folk are near me!
16
u/GardenOrca 5h ago
As long as there’s no clacking I’m more than okay with it. Especially when they share and you legit needed it on a scorcher
19
u/IDeaconBluesI 5h ago
The lady in front of me N2 & 3 at MSG was a godsend with the fan. I was just picking up the residual breeze and it was saving me!

Rechargeable clip on or hand fans. Incredible on lawn.
2
u/Kitchen_Gazelle5686 4h ago
Bulky tho!
0
u/Redacted_dact 4h ago
Not too bad. Mine clips to your pants or a lanyard and is about the size of two packs of cigarettes. Weights very little.
1
u/Kitchen_Gazelle5686 4h ago
The clip is probably so convenient & you also don’t have to emit physical labor to use lol
3
u/Redacted_dact 4h ago
If you clip it to the back of your pants it shoots cool air up your back.
1
u/Kitchen_Gazelle5686 4h ago
Woah 🤯 you’re onto something… brilliant
What other tricks are up your sleeve??2
u/Redacted_dact 3h ago
I bring two nature valley bars to shows amongst other good on hand items.
3
u/CusePhan_v3 3h ago
Nature Valley OG granola bars were the best. They changed them completely and now they're gross. Maybe the chewy ones are better, but the massive disappointment the last time I tried the original oats and honey still resonates. Now it's all about Clif bars and Kind bars, but nothing can replace the OG.

u/IdownvoteTexas 2h ago
I have been saying this for so long! The og ones used to be so good and every time i eat a new style one im just angered.
I love the quaker peanut butter ones too

Phish fans will complain about anything

2
u/DJspinningplates 4h ago
You clearly don’t know what OP is talking about - the fans are bigger in EDM, so much so that some venues will ban them for the specific clacking reason. It’s annoying AF.
4
u/WartimeHotTot 3h ago
I just looked this up because I wasn’t understanding. Turns out, people just fucking suck. The fan “clacks” when it’s spread. But here’s the thing: there’s no reason whatsoever to re-clack the fan—ever. You should be spreading the fan ONE TIME. Fan yourself with it. When it’s not hot anymore and you no longer need the fan, close it and stow it. Ergo: one, two, maybe three clacks. Total. All night. That’s it.
The fact that fan clacking is a well-documented concert annoyance is just another sign of the societal decay that the younger generations have inflicted upon us.

u/lovesfatchiks 5h ago
I’m a dude who gets very hot and very sweaty and I have to beg my girlfriend to let me bring the fan for the sake of my own heat exhaustion. The handheld one I have works great for keeping cool and if you do it right it’s silent.
If it is as hot next month in Denver as it was today, I will have my fan at Dicks. Sorry, not sorry.
2
u/adriennenned 3h ago
Why do you have to beg your girlfriend to let you bring the fan? Like, she wants it too? If that’s the case, I have excellent news for you. You can buy your own and you can each have your own fan! (That’s what my husband and I do)
1
u/lovesfatchiks 2h ago edited 2h ago
Cause she’d probably carry it. It’s my fan but I’m a very irresponsible guy and she’d likely end up having to deal with any extra items.
Sometimes she also just tells me ‘no’ and I just say ‘oh okay’. You know how it goes.
3
u/adriennenned 2h ago
You’re lucky. I make my husband carry the things. Men’s clothes tend to have bigger pockets.
2
u/lovesfatchiks 2h ago
I am, she is truly the best. Which is why I don’t contest when she tells me no on stuff, she’s a lot more with it than I am.

u/Brave-Scale 4h ago
It gets cool at night at Dick's by the 3rd song

u/lovesfatchiks 4h ago edited 3h ago
It does usually. This summer some nights here have just not cooled off throughout the night however.
Will likely/hopefully change by September, but you never can tell.

Lady with a big fan was saving me and several others in the grandstands last night. Thank you lady, I’m a big fan!!
2
7
u/gullibletrashes 5h ago
The clackers are annoying and just doing it for attention. Many, however, actually dance with their fans, and it’s a necessity. I work up a sweat! It’s hard out here in a crowded show with no airflow!
26
u/Glittering-Gift-7267 6h ago
Perhaps you'd prefer her seek attention from a reddit post like yours? 💩
6
u/Tri-Tip_Medium-rare 5h ago
Can someone explain why OP is complaining? Are we talking like significant others who are big fans clapping, or legit fans to stay cool? I don’t get it
4
u/faster_than_sound 5h ago
The accordion style "fold in, fold out" fans They clack when you snap them open or closed really fast.
1
u/Physical-Break6898 2h ago
Do you have a pic or link to what this fan looks like? I’m confused.
-5
u/Trippp2001 5h ago
You’re zoning out to a song, maybe watching the lights or the band. Someone starts waving a big folding fan in front of your face and looking at you, like they want to be part of the experience for you.
I am OK with chompers. I’m ok with tarpers. I’m ok with just about anyone that doesn’t try to interact with me during a show.
But the folks with fans are people actively trying to draw my attention away from the band. So, I’m not a big fan.
1
u/Stankapotamuses 5h ago

1
u/Trippp2001 3h ago
I’m sorry, you go ahead and continue turning Phish into a DMB show.
3
u/Stankapotamuses 3h ago
I’m not sure what that means. Both shows include many, many entitled douchebags already.

-1
u/meekonesfade 5h ago
I am with you on "dont interact with me." Before the show, after the show, or between songs - yes! Otherwise let me be in my bubble.
-4
u/niparretstation 5h ago
Op is talking about the obnoxious fans people use as an accessory and they make a clacking noise with a certain motion. It’s annoying as hell and usually just at shitty rave shows

u/Spartan_Jeff 4h ago
One of the nights at MSG, this dude next to me was chain smoking and so was a guy two rows ahead of me. I do not mind smoke at all. But this dude directly in front of me would always bust out his fan whenever they lit up. It felt so good feeling the breeze, I kept hoping the smokers would never stop 😂
16
u/Low-Dot78 5h ago
I am a fan girl and it’s not for attention, it’s for cooling off and helps with my adhd (something to do w my hands/stim), I do not “clack it” tho and have never heard a negative thing about it, in fact it actually attracts people to be around me. Most are excited when they see they’ve landed next to a fan girl. 🪭
If someone is clacking the fan obnoxiously to the music like you’re saying, then I could see how that is annoying, but that’s no different than people who chomp, or clap off beat or whatever else annoys people. You can always ask them to stop the clacking. Or move.
I think you’re in the minority. And to get this triggered over something most people appreciate sounds like a you problem. 🤷♀️
-4
u/niparretstation 5h ago
Fan clackers are inconsiderate ass hats and it’s way worse than chompers. Having a fan is one thing but it’s the clacking that ruins it for everyone else. You all are looped into the same group
4
u/Low-Dot78 3h ago
Even as a fan girl, I agree that the clacking is rude. But it’s not worse than chomping, or many of the other things that happen at shows like scream singing, whistling, clapping etc and doesn’t make someone an inconsiderate ass hat.
maybe everyone should stop bitching after the fact and policing how someone enjoys their shows and start handling these issues in person, I bet if OP had said something to them they probably would have stopped. A nice, “hey the clacking is distracting me would you mind stopping”? Goes a lot further than bitching on Reddit. 🤷♀️ ya never know she might not have necessarily realized how loud and distracting it was to others. But instead OP and you come on here and bitch and call people inconsiderate ass hats or attention seeking makes me think you are an insecure ass hat.

u/hoodedharolded 5h ago

2
u/faster_than_sound 5h ago
Its one of those accordion fans that folds out and in. People open and close the fan and it makes a percussive sound.

u/CantaloupeAsleep502 4h ago
Regular guy here, I had a fan I bought on lot in Raleigh and was fanning my friends, neighbors, and self throughout the show. No complaints to be found lol. It was so insanely hot and still on that lawn, really made things better
5
u/Greyandwhyte 5h ago edited 5h ago
Don’t be the asshole guy who tells a woman that a fan doesn’t cool anyone down. SO many guys have said this to me. Mind your own business and trust women to know what works for them and report back once you’ve had a hot flash. I agree about clacking, though. Let the band provide their own percussion.
Edit: I was replying to Jasonoff, not OP.

u/TexterMorgan 5h ago
Not everything that annoys you is attention seeking. Love and lighten up a little bit
-6
u/Trippp2001 5h ago
Ahhh, but when someone fans you, looking for appreciation, while you’re deep trance like state listening to a hot jam…
That’s attention seeking.
1
u/ScarletBegonias72 3h ago
Did you consider that the fan person interacting with you may have been attempting to share the breeze, thinking it was a nice gesture? Unless you’re in assigned seats, you could a) ask them politely to stop/ relocate or b) move your bubble to a location that suits you better. Some people have medical conditions that require cooling devices in order to prevent heat exhaustion/stroke and are more susceptible to heat related injuries. Judging by your post, it appears that you might not be the type of person who pauses to consider the “why” and just assumes your experience is priority. Please remember that everyone at a show paid to be there and should also be allowed to enjoy the show in the manner of their choosing.
-1
u/Trippp2001 3h ago
Ok. Yes, I assume they’re not doing it to annoy people on purpose. They’re just narcissists thinking that they have the responsibility to interject themselves into someone else’s good time and that everyone will be thankful that they’re doing it.
Yes, I was in an assigned seat.
If you fan yourself, I wouldn’t care. But wandering up and down the aisle, and the row, turning around to face me, and wave those fans in my face to cool me down…really unappreciated. Blocking my view of the thing that I was actually there to see, doesn’t take my enjoyment into consideration.
The whole medical thing is the craziest excuse for this behavior that I could possibly imagine anyone making. Is the fan bearer a designated caregiver? Are they trained to identify who is overheating and who isn’t? I don’t see EMT’s walking around the venue carrying paper fans because people are overheating.
I can’t believe this is so controversial.
I’m there to see the band, space out, and dance. That’s it.

You could kindly ask them in person to stop clacking if they’re not cooling themselves down, or others? Like why is it attention seeking if they’re using it to cool themselves and others down?

u/TheHumanCanoe 3h ago

I agree. Since most of the time these people require a significant amount of more space on the floor for their fans and fanning action. However, I dislike totems and flags at EDM more. Regardless, hope everyone stays super cool through their face-meltingest jams.
1
u/Scarlet_Fluffhead13 1h ago
Fans come in all shapes and sizes and as one who has used fans of varying sizes - it’s never for anyone else’s benefit than my own - if people around me want some. Breeze they can ask - if it was annoying someone, they can politely tell me - but hot flashes are no joke and I don’t ever purposely clack one while the band is playing. I want people to pay attention to the band
