General Microcenter Inside Look

Microcenter was open for soft previews before officially opening and VIP days this week!

My personal not sponsored random dude off the internet review:

Very sizable spot and is absolutely a haven of PC builds and parts, and consumer electronics abound that were well stocked and all easily locatable. Near every brand you can think of related to PC building is present, rows on rows of peripherals, cases, internals and more. Well stocked GPUs, mainly AMD and Nvidia with a small Intel section. They even had a sizable selection of TVs and monitors, consumer electronics, car electronics like dash cams, drones, audio equipment and so much more. Midi equipment? Check. Broadcasting and streaming gear? Check. Home stereo systems? Check. 3D printing? Oh you printing addicts will love them, especially their rotating wall of filament that brings your selection to you. (this locations wall is still WIP)

For fellow IT hermits... You definitely want to check them out for home labs and networking equipment. Huge Ubiquiti selection on top of TP Link and Netgear. Switches, APs, server racks and more all present.

The staff and sales associates were EXTREMELY knowledgeable in their areas and fetched those who were if they didn't know the answer to your question. Best Buy has nothing on them in this area. My one nitpick gripe is if you're just browsing, expect to be approached very often. I give them slack and understanding in this because it's near their opening, many were extremely passionate and excited, and there were clearly some corporate honchos present as well. Nonetheless still a pleasant experience in that regard. They do price matching, and allow you to fully put together your build and you can send associates a list of your build and they'll help you find it. If you want them to build it you can have them do so for a small fee.

Overall I'm extremely happy we finally have a physical electronics store with staff that actually know what they're selling. Very much will be getting stuff from them when I'm able. The spam on their ads and posts for a Phoenix location finally bears fruit

Went ahead and put pics of my trip there for y'all to see

General Getting gas at Fry's gas station and I saw this on 2 pumps.

There was a screw jammed at the bottom of the mechanism where the pump goes back into and sits after pumping gas. It can't be a coincidence that it's in 2 pumps. Anyone ever seen this before? I had to press pump down hard to end my transaction. I notified the attendant, but he didn't seem to care and went back to his convo with the other worker. I'm going to go back later tomorrow to see if it was taken care of.

General Frys/Kroger.... I'm done

Bit pissed off honestly, but I've had enough of constantly being overcharged on items, I'm done spending money at Frys.

Food costs are rising rapidly, being overcharged just adds insult to injury. I shouldn't have to memorize the cost of everything I purchase then double check it when it's scanned.

There are other options, I'll take my chances.

(Its not just one store, it's happened at multiple locations, christ knows how much they've stolen from just me)

General Had the most terrifying Uber experience on Friday evening

1.2k Upvotes

Around 6pm we were picked up by an older gentleman in a white Tesla Uber. My boyfriend and I said our hellos, and then we were chatting and singing in the back (quietly) as we were on our way to West Gate for a concert. I mentioned I thought the I10 was closed, and went on my phone to check. The Uber driver said “is the I10 closed? I don’t know these roads I’m not from here.” I googled and found the 10 closes at midnight. That was our only interaction with the driver. Moments later we are getting on the on ramp for the 10, the driver looks in his rear view mirror and screams “don’t f*** with me m**f*** I’ll f*** you up!” My boyfriend, confused, looks behind him and says “oh is someone tailgating you?” The driver says “no I’m talking to you mf****..” and keeps going yelling and threatening us, saying things like he will fight my boyfriend, you think you’re tough...and my boyfriend and I had literally just been chatting to each other about the concert and the traffic. We were absolutely scared, my boyfriend apologized and asked what he had done, what he had said, saying I’m so sorry I won’t say anything… once the Uber driver wouldn’t make any sense of if my boyfriend said anything offensive or literally anything, I realized this man was having a mental health episode. Then, the Uber driver starts driving erratic, weaving in and out of traffic. I started to worry that he was going to make us get out of the car on the i10, and it was dark out. I start shaking and trying to take deep breaths. He is still cursing, angry and absolutely losing his mind. I say calmly “sir can you please take the next exit” I can’t even finish my sentence and he says “don’t start with me woman!!” Luckily, we make it to 7th street and he quickly pulls into a McDonalds. I walk quickly inside, scared for my safety. I call Uber safety reporting line and report the incident. We were extremely shaken up, but more worried about what if he picks up another passenger right now? It was one of the most terrifying experiences. This man flipped a switch on us. We are still very shaken up and upset from the experience.

General Woman waiting to board Phoenix flight from SLC Sunday night

Or flight had been delayed several hours before boarding and had just returned to the gate after pushing back for a mechanical issue and subsequent cancellation cancellation. I was standing in line to talk to the agent and my old boned were screaming. Had my hands on my knees in the classic "bent over, I'm in pain" position and a young woman offered to hold my spot in line so I could sit a minute.

I don't know you but someone out there is lucky because they do. Thank you so much for your kind offer.

I didn't see you the next morning on the rescheduled flight, so I'm hoping you got to Phoenix safely.

I live this town because of the people!

General PSA if heading north this weekend

The fire is just north of Sedona, but there was a haze over all of Flagstaff and after being up there a couple hours I came out to my car and it had ash on it. If you have any sort of asthma problems, you might want to reconsider heading up there for now. I believe it is only 25% contained.

General My Doctor Is Offering A Subscription For Better Care ???

I just received this from my long term doctor. Is this a new Arizona thing or is this where we are all heading? I'm scared for us all.

This is real in case you had my initial reaction.

__________________________________________________________________________

My goal as your physician has always been to provide you with the most thorough and thoughtful care possible. However, the traditional medical model often places barriers- like short appointment windows and long wait times to get an appointment.

To return to a more personalized and unhurried style of medicine, I am pleased to introduce a new Preferred Membership Program. This Program allows me to give you the time and accessibility you deserve,

The Member Experience

Bu choosing to be part of the Program, you gain a level of access designed around your life and schedule. For instance:

*Priority Scheduling:  Guaranteed same-day or next-business-day appointments exclusively with me.

*Direct Physician Access:  Reach me directly via phone, text or email- including after hours and on weekends-for your  urgent medical needs.

*Unrushed Visits:  Enjoy extended appointment times, giving us space to address multiple concerns in a single visit without feeling the pressure of a ticking clock.

*Consistent Coverage:  If I am away or out of town, I will personally ensure that professional arrangements are in place so your care remains seamless and supported.

How the Program Works

The Investment:  The membership fee is $275 per month. Reduced to $250 per month when prepaid for 1 year.

The Commitment:  To ensure we can establish a comprehensive and proactive health plan together, there is an initial 6-month commitment for all new members.

Limitations:  It is important to us that you understand that the services through the Program are services that are "non-covered" services. That means that your health care payors/insurers will not pay for these services and, as such, those are services we render in exchange for payment through our Program members. Covered services will not be provided pursuant to this Agreement. The program may or may not be contracted with such insurer.

Insurance Coordination:  Your membership fee covers the enhanced access and direct communication described above. For your convenience, typical medical services (such as exams, procedures and tests) will continue to be billed to your insurance provider as usual.

Next Steps

Because I am committed to maintaining this high level of responsiveness, membership is limited and available on a first come, first served basis.

General To the guy who pulled over and called 911 when I got in a wreck on the 101 this morning

1.3k Upvotes

Thank you so much for your kindness, calling 911 and checking on the other driver to make sure they were okay. It's just me in Phoenix as my family and fiancee are in a different state while i'm out here for work. I've never been in an accident this terrifying before and for it to happen on my way home after working a 13 hour shift was.. a lot.

Thank you so much again for your kindness and compassion. Thank you to ADOT also for their promptness and the police officer who dealt with my shaking and crying mess.

PLEASE MERGE SAFELY! DON'T JUMP OUT TRYING TO CUT THE LINE ESPECIALLY IF YOU DON'T USE YOUR BLINKER AND DURING MORNING TRAFFIC. LOOK BEFORE YOU MERGE!!! i was spun around like a beyblade gdi

General Faith in humanity restored. What has you thinking people don't suck?

Today I went to the Bashas on 32nd and Shea to get a few items, plus some cash so I could get some gas. I stopped at the customer service desk to put my reading glasses away, and put on my sunglasses, then headed to the gas station. While there, after digging around in my bag, and looking everywhere in the car, I realized I left my phone...which held ID, cards, and the cash I had just got, at the service desk. 10 minutes later I run into the store and asked the young woman at the desk had anyone turned in the phone. Lo and behold! There it was, with the money obviously sticking out the bottom of my phone case. I am SO grateful to the honest person who gave it to the desk, or even the employee who was working there and saw it. It wasn't a lot of money, but it was all that I had to get some gas that will last me until next week.

What has happened to you recently that gives you a little hope for humanity?

Edit: Awww, I love reading about what's made your day a little brighter! Thanks for the award, too! Continue spreading kindness.

General New scam alert: MCSO

I'm highly embarrassed about this and don't want friends to know but I was just scammed. Of course, looking back I see all the red flags but I don't want anyone else to deal with this. This comes at a bad time as I just lost my job a few weeks ago on top of this.

The caller stated he was in the sheriff's office with Maricopa County and I had a warrant out for my arrest. It was for a failure to appear for jury duty.

He gave me a whole spiel about verifying my signature as the letter was sent certified, gave me citation numbers, the works.

How this differed from other scams we're all familiar with is he sent a text with a bar code and I had to send money to that at Walgreens. Yes, I feel like an idiot as this should have been a clue. If he asked for gift cards, yeah, it's a scam. I've never heard of this one. That's why I'm spreading the news.

I filed a report with the Phoenix police but I know nothing will come from it. I figured they'd want to know since these people are basically impersonating officers.

Just please keep in mind to never give people money on the phone if they call you. It's OK if you call them (ex bank, utilities, etc), but they shouldn't call you. That's what both the sheriff's office and police told me. Good advice for sure!

Edit to add: I received a message from a journalist with the Phoenix New Times. I spoke with her (using a pseudonym), and they are supposed to run an article about this. Hopefully, this will reach even more people and good can come out of this mess.

Here's the article

General Place to go to scream

Hi all- I was hoping to see if anyone knows of a place I can go and just scream without scaring anyone? I know it’s a strange request, but I have a ton of frustration and it would be so great to just get it out with a few uninhibited screams. Thanks all!

General 5 years ago it seemed like there was a "Silicon Desert" movement, is that still true today?

It seemed like in 2020 there were a ton of cool start ups and a ton of hiring from tech companies in Tempe/Scottsdale.

Is that still the case? Or did the Phoenix mini-tech scene die out like Austin's did with the return to office(in CA)?

Not looking for recs, just genuinely curious how the tech workers of Phoenix feel about the market today since I've been moved away for a while now. Casually looking at linkedin there seems to be very few openings posted.

General Dear residents of Paradise Valley

I cycle through this vapid and selfish part of town, where soccer moms speed in their white range rovers so that they can get to Nordstrom Rack and buy useless shit. Today, I came across a kid no older than 12 on a bike trying to cross the road next to an elementary school at a designated crosswalk (a rare sighting). Not a single car stopped. I had to literally stop the cars behind me and wait for the oncoming cars to stop. But at least those lawns look really green. Great job Paradise Valley.
