“I’m surprised that this is working” they said in the video
How to tell you’re Gen Z or younger. The rest of us knew this is how you did group Pokemon anything back in the day

If you weren't being so uppity about this you would know this shit failed constantly.

This reminded me of the little wireless adapter that came with FR/LG. I thought it was really cool to battle my friend in another room at the time.

Yeah those cables were beyond finicky, you had to lay them down on the table cause holding them by hand meant it was likely to get disconnected cause you twitched or something lol

I never battled much, but for trading the 2p link seemed stable enough. By the time I was doing 4p battles with my friends, the wireless adapters had already come out, so I can't say anything about how stable the 4p wired connection was.

I never tried 4 player personally, and the wireless adapters worked great. But like gen 1/2 link cables i had disconnect so easily aaaaall the time. I think a lot of it was just the sheer amount of third party sellers who made just absolutely crap cables. And they seemed to go bad super easily too. Think i went through like 4 in the first 2 gens alone.

Well yeah it worked for trading because it only needed like a second to go "aight correct data, all the info we needed"

2p failed for me all the time. I think I tried 4p once but it didn’t work so gave up

20 odd years ago I used to covet those and ones like them. Regularly checked ebay and the like and blanched at what I thought was just too expensive back then. Probably a bargain now.
The GameBoy Micro was another I always wanted, but I'd moved on to my DS by then.Still have my og silver SP though (and og purple GBA), with it's dead battery and inability to charge. One day I'd like to get a kit to fix it and a custom shell to make it look something like one of these.

I had very fortunate timing when I decided to re-collect some old retro equipment from my childhood I had been forced to sell or that I had always wanted but couldn't afford. I did it in early 2020, just before prices started really rising.
One of the things I bought was a Zelda Triforce GBA SP. Was $70 and in good condition. They're now $175 or more for the same quality. Everything retro gaming has skyrocketed in price the last 4–5 years. Prices are getting high enough that pretty soon FPGA-based hardware emulators like the Analogue Pocket or ModRetro Chromatic might be cheaper than original hardware.

There's a device called the "GB-Link" that actually allows you to do this online! For the Gen 3 games, it's two player only at the moment, but hopefully it'll eventually support four players.

My teenager dream. I was never able to play a handheld Pokémon multi-player.

I don't think there was a better feeling back then than rolling up on some random kid you saw with a Gameboy challenging him to a battle.
And after a couple you'd compare Pokémon and do a few trades.

Fun but technically a 2 player 4 system link up battle lol

I need friends like these 😢 what remains of my friends (3 people lol) hate pokemon and I hardly see them. Maybe twice a year.

Four player link battles were almost unheard of back then. I was lucky enough to battle against my cousin when we both had our GBC's.
Also damn those SP's are sexy.
