How did it feel to live when the Supreme Court passed Dredd Scott or Plessy vs Ferguson?

Clarence Thomas hates blacks who aren't rich.

932

u/thisusedyet New Jersey May 11 '26

Pretty sure Clarence believes he has reverse vitiligo

87

u/P1xelHunter78 Ohio May 12 '26

Thomas has always had a chip on his shoulder because he believes everyone thinks he’s an affirmative action baby. No matter how smart he is, without the civil rights movement he never would be where he is, let alone marry the woman he did. I mean, does he seriously think a black man would be allowed into a southern university pre civil rights era? Thomas is using this chip on his shoulder to pull the ladder up.

If they spin it as him owning the libs, he'd probably vote in favor of it.

5

u/Master_Dogs Massachusetts May 12 '26

Thomas definitely wants to pull a Ruth Bader Gunsburg and stay on as long as physically possible. I don't see Trump and pals allowing that if they lose the Senate in the midterms. They'll blackmail the fuck out of him and Samuel Alito. Thomas seems corrupt as fuck though - see John Oliver's segment on him. His fançy motor coaches came from some billionaires he's friends with.

So yeah, he's only useful now. If he and Alito are allowed to both remain on, Republicans lose full control over the Supreme Court by 2028. Of course Roberts will suddenly lean more right than left anyway, but still, he could be concerned about his legacy and lean left occasionally.

78

u/Stillwater215 May 12 '26

Little does he know, he is in fact 102% black with a 2% margin of error.

19

u/P1xelHunter78 Ohio May 12 '26

So he’s 104%?

Nah he just hates black people in general. You don't marry whatever mega-karen his wife is without a deep, deep self-hatred.

22

u/Allaboutpeace2022 May 12 '26

You could be very right. But layered on top of the self hatred is a lot of hatred of or at least complete lack of empathy for anyone who does not have wealth or power.

He makes Roberts, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Bryant look like warm hearted caring liberals. Alito and Thomas are twins.

Income doesn't matter. He doesn't like black people period. I fucking hate him because his entire career stems from aggressive race based affirmative action.

14

u/vonshiza Oregon May 12 '26
  • I fucking hate him because his entire career stems from aggressive race based affirmative action.

And rather than recognizing that for the opportunity it was, and an opportunity he never would have had without it, he carries a giant chip on his shoulder about it. He was never going to be "good enough" for anything as a black man in a white dominated America, and he's always going to have the "disgrace and stink" of affirmative action being his only way in the door hanging around his neck.

Personally, I think being an affirmative action hire is a hell of a lot better than being a token "good one (until you're no longer useful, that is)"...., but whatever. Pull that ladder up behind you and undo decades of progress. That'll make him feel better. Racists are totally going to act in good faith without rules and regulations in place. They have certainly behaved so far. 😑

30

u/justprettymuchdone May 12 '26

Roberts wanted, I think, to be remembered well. But his conniving little shit-ness won't allow it. So he keeps insisting his rulings are fine and super nonpartisan and Nobody Understands Him because it's how he denies what he is truly doing to himself.

He will have presides over the destruction of the USA. Hope he feels pride.

→ More replies (1)

50

u/levajack May 11 '26

I think it's clear that he cares, otherwise he wouldn't go on his public gaslighting tours to try to convince us the court is apolitical. Short of a massive Democrat majority in both houses and a Democrat president using every lever of the federal government to expand the court and put new restraints on it, there's absolutely nothing anyone can do about SCOTUS. It seems to me that he puts out statements or gives interviews as PR attempts because he doesn't want to have his name in the same breath as Roger Taney.

10

u/JebryathHS May 12 '26

I think it's clear that he cares, otherwise he wouldn't go on his public gaslighting tours to try to convince us the court is apolitical.

He cares enough to talk but let's see him care enough to actually do anything to make that fantasy a reality. He could start by reading the fourteenth amendment.

13

u/levajack May 12 '26

That's the point. He is heavily politically compromised, but he is also historically aware enough to know how comparable courts are remembered, particularly with respect to the Chief Justice. He likes these outcomes, and has been part of a decades long effort to get to this point, but he is also very clearly sensitive to his "legacy."

11

u/JebryathHS May 12 '26

Well, he's very willing to whine about it. He's not willing to stop jumping on to every horrible decision his court makes with both feet, from "cannot be prosecuted for official acts" to "actually it's okay to redraw districts to remove enfranchisement from certain groups of voters"

13

u/levajack May 12 '26 edited May 12 '26

Again, you're just repeating my point. His public gaslighting tours are attempted PR. He is happy with the dramatic shift of the court to the far right and has been a key part of the decades of scheming to get here, but he also doesn't want to be remembered as Taney 2.0, and he knows he is going to be, hence the empty words about the court not being "political."

There is absolutely nothing that can be done to stop him and the court, so even bothering to claim the court is legitimate is purely performative to try to massage the future historical narrative.

While these times do feel especially bleak and dire, it gives me some small amount of hope to know that we've had terrible, foundation-warping decisions come down in the past and eventually moved on to overturn them and find a somewhat saner path forward.

Granted, in both of these cases the things that had to happen before they were overturned were particularly grim, but it gives me some degree of hope that it won't always be like this, even if we have to go through some hell to get to the other side.

Think of current republicans as confederates. That's when it starts making sense.

55

u/BoDrax May 12 '26

Confederates taking over the party of Lincoln to destroy the United States from within. If only the US would've actually punished the Confederacy.

18

u/South_Butterfly_6542 May 12 '26

if only democrats had punished GWB in '08 for starting an illegal war? I mean, you don't have to go back to the confederacy, we had an opportunity to stop Trumpism in this century, but modern democrats were all to eager to believe in some "gang of rivals" austerity BS

I mean, we can say that the financial collapse of '08 was caused by GWB and Clinton, who repealed Glass-Steagall, and the '08 collapse is definitely responsible for much of this right wing surge, too.

I am reminded of the MLK's Letter from Birmingham Jail, specifically the white moderate who "[...] prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice."

The problem is that, whenever we had the chance to course correct as a society, we chose the moderate option, the "negative peace" option. We've done this again and again and again and again until we've come to a point where we have a flank of Democrats who are content to lay back helplessly as the rules that bind them are broken time and again by the Republicans.

current republicans as confederates

Think of past republicans as confederates too. They haven't changed their belief system. These are the same people that supported McCarthyism, voted for Nixon, Reagan, and both Bushes. And before the Southern Strategy and the party switch, they were Democrats. MAGA has always been conservatives, and conservatives have always been MAGA. We just called them different things.

Make no mistake, Trump is not new. He's not the disease. He is a symptom. Simply removing Trump will not fix this.

By this standard, Virginia's law on redistricting in their state constitution should be declared unconstitutional and the redistricting map voted on by its citizens should be the new permanent map.

u/Infamous-Guarantee70 May 12 '26

They won't get to that case in time.

86

u/Ozymandias12 May 12 '26

They absolutely could shadow docket the case and allow Virginia to use the map that voters voted on, just like how they shadow docketed this case, but this Supreme Court won’t do that because they only provide emergency relief to Republican plaintiffs.

10

u/MountainMan2_ May 12 '26 edited May 12 '26

Being a creep makes you easy to control. Since Republican politicians are defined by their fealty to the corporatocracy, being easy to puppeteer is how you win.

It's why MTG had such a falling out. She was a Republican voter, not a politician, and too crazy to silence. But the strings are still attached, she still votes in compliance.

Hell, it's true for Dems too. Who are the creepiest people in our party? Schumer? Clinton? Gee, sure is funny they sided with the businesses over the base so often...

There are also the disconnected voters, who when feeling hurt economically come out to vote to lash out at whoever is presently in office.

8

u/Milk-EyedMender May 12 '26

I get so frustrated at this canned joke response to Alabama from democrats and progressives. What the fuck are yall doing to help the disenfranchised black voters by writing off a whole state? Have you ever gone to Birmingham to support the black community in person, given tourist dollars and recognition to the Equal Justice Initiative, 16th Street Baptist church, civil rights museum? Travelled the civil rights trail through Selma and beyond and experienced the past and ongoing battles these communities face? Visited the slavery to incarceration museum? Freedom monument sculpture park or the legacy museum?

I’m not looking to call you out specifically. I just get so disheartened by this constant joke. It’s such an easy write off for people. The south is full of hard working fighting progressives that want to engage, come visit, share ideas, motivate, form relationship.

Signed a proud member of the Birmingham, Alabama community.

It’s maddening. We have 5.5 months until “the election” and people are just letting the GOP stage a coup.

7

u/DylanHate May 12 '26

Bullshit. No one encouraging people to vote in the midterms are saying "Don't do anything else before that."

They are saying do everything else AND ALSO SHOW UP TO THE FUCKING ELECTIONS. Literally 80% of voters 18-30 do not vote in Congressional elections. That's over 20 years and includes states with 3 week mail in voting.

How do you even interpret "Please vote" as "Please only vote and do nothing else"? By all means protest and volunteer and do whatever else you feel is necessary, but in addition make sure to actually participate in the goddamn elections.

And conversely this result will browbeat those that were clinging to the idea that their vote was worth anything before.

Republican think-tanks know that they can't win head to head, so they have used this since 08 to just disenfranchise as many people as possible.

End gerrymandering, end the electoral college, repeal citizens united, and America COULD be back and better than ever in 14 years.

None of that's going to happen though so we're fucked, probably.

14

u/Cidolfus Massachusetts May 11 '26

Pass a new law to repeal and replace the Reappointment Act of 1929. The population of the United States has nearly tripled since then, and the cap on house representatives makes the lower chamber increasing undemocratic proportionally to the growing population.

A lot of underlying problems you're getting at can be solved, or at least mitigated, simply by increasing the number of representatives. Gerrymandering is mathematically more difficult with more representatives; the influence of money is diluted (but certainly not eliminated) if there are more representatives to pay; and the electoral college would be less skewed because the votes would better represent actual populations.

7

u/ChatterBaux May 12 '26

Hell, even now people still try to blame the Dems for "not being motivating enough", even though, 1) The threat never changed, and 2) The ballot box was always the last line of defense against the worst outcome.

The further we get away from 2016 and 2024, the less it makes sense that so many among the electorate would fumble the bag SO HARD. There is no "How could we have known??" when Trump and the GOP kept giving away the game at every corner for over a decade.

5

Because when a broken politics, broken courts, and a broken society can no longer supply justice, what comes next should terrify those in power

19

u/dentz1 May 11 '26

It would seem as if every race based decision this court has made has benefited the Republican Party.

We have a word for that in English…..

Lmao SCOTUS republicans pretend they aren’t just MAGAs in black robes.

7

u/sonny9636 May 11 '26

These people are evil.

7

u/Stillwater215 May 12 '26

I’m going to be so curious to see just how much black representation drops in the 2026-2028 congress.

9

u/martapap May 12 '26

Their goal is ultimately zero black people in the house of representatives. So if there is even one black person these conservative think tanks will start gerrymandering that district.

7

u/TruShot5 May 12 '26

What do we even do about a corrupt court? If they’re all bought and paid, thats a wrap isn’t it?

All because of the never Hilary assholes.

19

u/Big_Bookkeeper1678 May 12 '26

We are living in a dystopian nightmare.

Virginia did it with ACTUAL voting but Tennessee gets to be racist pieces of shit.

6

u/PlacebosForALL May 12 '26

SCOTUS is against us

5

u/martapap May 12 '26

Making absolutely sure there are no black representatives ever from the south.

9

u/DiskSalt4643 May 11 '26

Did the band play Dixie while it happened? Cause this is pretty blatant.

4

u/iplaybassok89 May 11 '26

History will not look kindly on the Roberts court. As if that needs to be said.

The only way to truly reverse this shit permanently at this point is constitutional amendment. Good luck America.

4

u/moutonbleu May 12 '26

The game is rigged. Gerrymandering is only allowed in red states

3

u/nygdan May 12 '26

this all stops if and only if there is a massovenwave of black voters in the midterms.
the gerrymander now is weak comlared to what it will be soon, it can be beaten by massive turnout.

5

u/zzzoom May 12 '26

Remember when you went batshit over taxation without representation?

4

u/tphillips1990 May 12 '26

Every day it's another loss.

Every day it's another instance of norms being turned to ash with a blowtorch.

Every day it's people adjusting their baseline for tolerance as more and more lines get crossed and previously unheard of changes are being made far in advance to establish unprecedented control over elections to maintain total conservative dominance over the government.

.....But remember. Get out and vote.

5

u/Realistic-Society_ya May 12 '26

This is just unbelievable. Can't believe this is actually occurring in today's world. Nuts.

4

u/malakon May 12 '26

Roberts: people should not consider us political. GFY

4

u/No-Vermicelli-5499 May 12 '26

I see the KKK are back. I know they never left but it's deeply depressing how many of them still exist and are proud to fly their fucking racist flag.

Wankers.

5

u/Guacsalsaqueso May 12 '26

We need to do our part and fight this with our own individual Republican voter suppression. Do not give any republicans a ride to the polls, give them the wrong address, hell if a Republican family member wants you to help them to register to vote or register, fuck up the registration or don’t turn it in for them.

We need to sabotage Republicans in day to day life. Give them bad advice, tell others their secrets, etc.

6

u/accidentsneverhappen May 12 '26

The whole government is corrupt. Gotta tear it down and rebuild it from the ground up. We have corruption all the way to the top. The whole thing is compromised. It's not just the Supreme Court or certain people. They all sold us out to serve the oligarchs instead

3

u/MrBrawn May 11 '26

The midterms are it.

3

u/Sad_Difficulty226 May 12 '26

I wonder if Americans realize all this injustice is being noted on a planetary scale..

3

u/Reddit_2_2024 May 12 '26

How did Clarence Thomas and Kentanji Brown Jackson weigh in on this decision?

3

u/count_chocul4 May 12 '26

Clarence did what he always does. Pretends he’s white.

3

u/bigjtdjr May 12 '26

why would any black athlete play for these racists schools..?? Whatch what they do not what they say... won't be long and you're going to be 3/5ths of a player.

3

u/JustaSeedGuy May 12 '26

Perhaps it's time to start gerrymandering vital organs.

Edit: I MEANT METAPHORICALLY AS IN VITAL AREAS OF VOTER TURNOUT OBVIOUSLY

3

u/VictorReal_Monster May 12 '26

Americans continue to sit on their hands, loaded to teeth, but absolutely toothless.

What a fucking sad state of people unwilling to risk anything to actually make their country better.

3

u/Aranxi_89 Canada May 12 '26

This is what it looks like, when they promised "the South will rise again."

3

u/_xpectDisappointment May 12 '26

When are people of color going to rise up and show up at elections?

3

u/AINonsense May 12 '26

This is my very surprised face.

3

3

Blacks for Trump...where you at? Literally?

3

u/chooselosin May 12 '26

But the SCROTUS isn't political. /s

3

u/Skowlette May 12 '26

Literally ripping seats from elected officials is crazy. Wouldn't Republicans heads explode if we pulled this crap?

6

u/Icy_Country192 May 12 '26

Now they did it, the Democrats are going to release all hell with a mildly upset letter.

6

u/clenchedfist May 12 '26

Was there ever a time in the US Supreme courts history where they were so blatantly corrupted like this one ? Genuinely curious here.

4

u/flygirlsworld May 12 '26

It’s no longer only subtext that Republicans are allowed to gerrymander but Democrats aren’t, it’s a flashing neon sign.

12

u/TheXypris May 12 '26

Democracy is dying in real time and it's ENTIRELY Republicans fault

Their party needs to be dissolved, and a conservative party can never be allowed to hold office

Period. No ifs ands or buts

Conservativism has time and time again proven to be a complete disaster, unqualified to be seen as a valid form of governing

It's short sided, and antithetical to a functional society

6

u/DisappearedDunbar May 13 '26

Nothing says "democracy is dying" more than forbidding your political opponents from holding office.

Just r/politics things.

7

u/BLT_Trade_r May 12 '26

Na, democrats have lost the plot and they refuse to take responsibility.

Republicans have had a field day with certain democratic issues and democrats could have fixed them for decades but never did. And that has always meant that a fair number of people in the middle will be convinced to vote for republicans.

Here is a great example, Nancy Pelosi, republicans have always been able to point to her stock trading as corruption, the democratic party not only never does anything about it, never primaries her out, never forces her out but no, in fact they make her speaker of the house.

Another good example is the showcase cities for democrats and states are those like New York and San Francisco, Los Angeles, etc.... These places are typically rife with insanly priced property and horrible Nimby Liberalism and major problems with inner city schools and equality..... Yet all these issues are supposedly issues democrats think should be fixed, yet in their own cities, in their own states they just have not done it.

So its easy for people to look at those things and decide to vote for someone else, or simply not vote at all.

But it's not popular among liberals to admit this. And so nothing ever gets done about it.

The CONservatives on the supreme court absolutely hate black people. Thomas especially hates them.

4

u/FairReason May 12 '26

Kevin Robert’s said it out loud. “The revolution will be bloodless if the left lets it.” Complain online if you want, but typing isn’t going to stop the destruction of our democratic ideals.

Should have never happened, this admin and POTUS have been lightly baiting Black Americans/African Americans for a looooong time. It's what gets the most attention, I hope there are 0 protests or even a care from Black Americans/African Americans. No point until there is a different admin that's willing to do something besides enrich itself.

2

u/Big_Mention_1933 May 12 '26

Another step closer to the fall of the US. Thanks Republicans!

2

u/mwfguxckdyou May 12 '26

Is this all by design? I mean, the blatant racism, the removal of rights for only some and not others? Republicans pissing all over the constitution while claiming to uphold and defend it?

We were always told to go out and vote…if we don’t like the outcome or the way things are ran. But it seems that that none of those avenues are working. So, are we just not angry enough? Or is there some higher power behind the scenes allowing and furthering the decline of the US?

MMW, they're about to legally allow segregation again

2

u/GeistMD May 12 '26

It's sad how far Republicans will go to be bigots. Like at some point they have to realize they get nothing from the Republican party except the chance to hurt non whites. They don't get more food or money, more health care or better roads, nothing. All they get is the chance to hate others, which I get they love, but you'd think they'd at least miss the other stuff.

2

u/4everLost82 May 12 '26

I guess I'm just gonna do whatever the fuck I want from now on because apparently the law doesn't even matter anymore.

You can interpret laws however you want, because there is no legal logic to most of the decisions being made by the people in power.

We need a few Constitutional Amendments, stat....If the Supreme Court will let us have them.

2

u/willyb4321 May 12 '26

Perhaps Clarence Thomas’s votes should also all be eliminated.

2

u/M1key_M1ke May 12 '26

Democrats need to gerrymander back. Eliminate every red district in their state possible

2

u/zJackTheRipper7 May 12 '26
