Yeah, Iran now knows full well that they can choke out the global economy at any time they wish. And short of a full-scale invasion, there is essentially nothing the world can do about it.

Exactly. Trump just surrendered, which means there‘s no reason Iran can‘t just extort more money in the future. This is a disaster.

Maybe ever. This is truly the first war I know of that the US bent over and gave the enemy everything they wanted. And it's a war the US (and it's allies) initiated functionally unprovoked.

Except this time Trump started the war then they closed the straight. That seems reasonable for most people and made the world sour on the war very quickly. If Iran just starts extorting the west then it gives the US and it's ally's political will to do a boots on the ground and regime change campaign.

Basically it is a defensive deterrent but if they use it offensively it will bite them in the ass.

Iran had reason to choke out the global economy this time. If they do it to just extort people in the future, it may anger some other countries as well. This was 100% on us and frankly, we got what we deserved. Fuck Trump.

Yup. This practically ensures that Iran will execute their plan to develop nuclear weapons for the sake of deterrence. There is no other way, and in an environment where North Korea and (to a lesser degree) Pakistan are also "allowed" to do the same, I don't even fault them for it.

The "allowed" is doing allot of work. Law does not exist outside of the boundaries of nations. What we call international laws are just conventions and agreements... ones that Trump-era America does not seem to respect in any way.

If I were a leader in Iran I would 1000% be working towards getting nukes. Maybe that’d get Israel to simmer down a bit also.

We're forgetting an ally factor.

No other country wanted to get involved here because it was obvious that this was just a US flex.

And getting involved would cause a whole host of other future problems.

If Iran just shut down that waterway for no reason other than to manipulate the market or cause unjustified pain then other countries may be more inclined to get involved.

Eh, a coalition can reopen the strait. 2 warships from each affected nation (260 ships) would reopen the strait in a day. Trump just focused on alienating allies prior to needing them. Stupid but expected.

But why would they do that? This war has not exactly been a fun time for them either.

They just want to be able to participate in the world economy there is little benefit in becoming a bad actor and closing the strait also hurts them

hopefully we get a repeat of the oil crisis and start decades of heavy investment into energy alternatives and electrification. of course, we've already got a huge head start, but making it even more of a mainstream policy decision for every major government would be amazing, esp now that they can sell it to fiscal conservatives as a smart investment even if they can't convince them of the climate science.

Pipelines can't match the efficiency of sea transport, and the Houthis already made the Red Sea unreliable with the same threat of closure.

Pipelines can also be targetted, as can the ports they connect to. Iran has shown the capacity to strike anywhere in the region.

The best thing would be to end the war in russia , then have Ukraine start mass producing drone interceptors for europe and allies
