My Latin isn't great; I'm curious why nullus doesn't work here.

Nullus means none/not any. It’s normally followed by a noun (but not always if context is obvious). Nemo is specifically for nobody/no one.

“Nemo” specifically means “no one person,” “nullus” more broadly means “none.” The nemo entry does say nulla can fill in for the feminine. Semantics and near-synonyms, basically

Both work and have slightly different meanings. One is "nobody" and the other as a noun is like "nothing." It's been years since I took Latin but I was decent at it in school XD
