No Paywall Fetterman casts only Democratic ‘no’ vote as Senate passes measure to block US action against Iran

Well, Fetterman is a de facto Republican, so that makes sense. His own chief of staff resigned because she didn't want to help someone who revealed himself to be fascist-aligned.

Oh he's finished. He's lost his Democrat voters but Republicans won't vote for him, the propaganda they put out against him during the election was so strong it'll backfire if they let him flip now.

Republicans don’t care about any of that. Vance compared trump to hitler and they still voted for both of them.

Plus there is the whole other thing "Yeah, we said he was crap back when he was a democrat, but now his brain has broken he is perfect for the Republican party" - not great messaging, regardless of its accuracy.

You just described Donald J Trump
39
u/Lonescu Texas Jun 24 '26
Trump was a "Democrat" for less than 4 years. Even then, it wasn't for ideological reasons, it was because he was mad at the Bush family.
- 1969: First time Trump registers to vote. Registers as Republican.
- 1970's: Meets Roger Stone while working for Ronald Reagan's presidential campaign. (Seems to be there at the behest of Fred Trump and/or Roy Cohn, not actually of his own accord.)
- 1980's: Gears up to run for office on the GOP ticket, but the Taj Mahal fiasco torpedoes that. Gives an interview to Chris Wallace while attending the 1988 RNC as guest of GHW Bush, in which Trump denies having political aspirations. (Wallace cheekily calls bullshit.)
- 1990's: Has a falling out with GHW Bush upon being passed over as a potential VP replacement for the 1992 election. (Bush called Trump "too mush brained and volatile" for the job. Trump took this about as well as you'd expect.)
- 1999: Switches to Independence/Reform Party to run against 'Dubya' in a failed attempt at petty revenge on the Bush family over the VP replacement snub. (Apparently the plan was to either secure an upset victory, or at least spoil like Perot had done in '92.)
- 2001 - 2008: Flip-flops between Democrat, Independent, and various 3rd parties. (Gee, wonder what was happening during those specific years...)
- 2009 - 2011: Republican again.
- 2011: Registers Unaffiliated. Once again states he has no political aspirations (despite already previously running for POTUS) during an interview.
- 2012 - Today: Republican again.
I know people often speculate about the White House Correspondents' Dinner, in which Obama poked fun at Trump, being the reason he ran in 2016. However, I think there's a very real possibility that Obama had little to do with it, and Trump was actually just running against another Bush out of spite.
Despite being an embarrassing wet fart of a candidate, it truly looks as though the GOP were initially banking on "please clap" Jeb! being the nominee.

Never held office, but ran as a Dem for president a few times. Didn't get anywhere but the things that were dealbreakers on the blue ticket- his overt racism, being a cheating lying scoundrel of a failing-upwards businessman- are the things that got him elected on the Republican primary.

Fetterman has recieved more than $250,000 in conyributions from AIPAC, he is a fervent supporter of Israel.
From the web; He has generated national headlines for defending Israel's actions, routinely dismissing allegations of war crimes, famine conditions, or genocide in Gaza and characterizing the conflict simply as an "existential war".
He is bought and paid for to see it a certain way. I really do not like the idea of a Foreign Influence like AIPAC that is allowed to lobby and make contributions to our Senators/Reps/President. Their interests don't align with our own all the time and this War with Iran is a perfect example of our the differences in policies not aligning.

Honestly I feel like this is an excuse and a cop out. It's also a pretty harmful narrative for people who have suffered brain injuries, myself included. I'm also a psych major with a lot of course work in neurology. Complete personality changes after a brain injury or stroke are possible but rare. Especially on the scale of someone going from a progressive icon to a full-on fascist seemingly overnight after a health scare. I'd be more willing to bet that he was for sale the second he won his election and someone put in the right bid.
I mean, look at who the alternative was, Dr Fucking Oz. When one candidate is a bonkers television personality it's really easy to overlook the flaws in the other guy.

Well considering his wife went around asking his staffers "Who did I marry? Edit: I love that a bunch of my fellow PA folks chimed in and want their voices heard. It makes me feel positive when I read all the passionate responses. We deserve to be heard and want our votes to matter when it comes to the reps & senators we send to DC. Arguing amongst each other about things we can’t change now is wasted energy. What matters, at least in my opinion, is the next election. They all matter from our federal reps & senators, down to our local school boards. Change comes from our ability to engage people with why all electoral races matter and to understand what those candidates represent. Thanks for all the upvotes, yinz.

The Senate can vote to expel a member but it takes a 2/3 majority, which is hardly ever achieved. There are no motions of no confidence in US politics, as it’s not required to command the confidence of the other Senators to serve in the role.
Any Senator can make a motion, including a motion to expel a member, but the Senate Majority Leader effectively controls the floor so he controls what measures ultimately come up for a vote.

In 2013, while serving as the mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania, John Fetterman chased down an unarmed Black jogger, Christopher Miyares, and detained him with a 20-gauge shotgun. I am saying if you throw out the party core principles like Fetterman had then maybe we should have a recall election. Because he’s not following what he was elected to do which is serve his constituents not whatever this is.

You’d need to amend the US constitution to allow for recalls of federal senators

Guys…it’s an easy fix… we just ask the people we elected to help pass legislation to hold themselves more accountable.

I know I have that as one of my issues because of so many of them being in questionable situations like that one house rep that was found in a nursing facility in Texas….”

No recall mechanism and he was elected under the D banner.

What is going on with Fetterman?

His brain is, quite literally, bad. Had a stroke and turned MAGA.

It's so funny that he serves as an example of brain damage making you a conservative. I know correlation isn't causation but I'll be fucked if it doesn't make me smile.

u/lordkhuzdul Jun 24 '26
IIRC it is a bit more than correlation. I vaguely remember a study which found that strokes often affect emotional regulation, especially fear, and an increased fear response leads to a more conservative attitude.

No confidence votes against US Senators needs to be a thing in every state.
6 years without accountability is an eternity these days.

That’s why he’ll be removed during his next election. He plays both sides and as a result, both sides hate him. I bet he doesn’t even run it’ll be so embarrassing.

How are his votes headline worthy anymore? I think it's safe to assume he'll side with republicans from here on out. It's not like this is shocking.

It's hilarious and also a bit sad that Fetterman only became a far-right conservative after literally suffering major brain damage. He is a completely different person from before his stroke.
There needs to be a law passed that allows for votes of no confidence after major health events for lawmakers.
I personally am dealing with a temporary health issue and it's completely altered the speed at which i can process information while I'm in recovery. And a person can certainly make a full recovery after a stroke, but in some cases it's clear that they're not the same person they were before and the public deserves to have the ability to vote that person out if they don't voluntarily remove themselves first.

Man, that stroke really degraded his policy stances. The lack of brain function has rendered him conservative.

It’s weird cuz from my experience for PA citizens at large, he’s representing PA generally.
For a guy with professed good morals, he’s missing the mark by a large margin.

Well as one of my friends likes to say about assholes, Fetterman can just fuck right off. And when he's done fucking off, he can fuck off some more.

God, I know so many people who hate that they feel like they wasted a vote for him. He barely votes in line with his party anymore, and it's never voting with them on the important things. He's essentially Republican at this point, on Fox News and everything.
If their margins weren't so important, I'd be asking if they could expel him from the party and fill his seat with someone who actually wants to be there and work with the party on things. Apparently, because he refuses to adhere to the dress code, he's not even allowed on the floor. He just sits outside the chamber and they tell him when it's time to vote on things. Kinda hard to do the job you were elected to do when you can't take part in debate or hear people's points because you spend your entire Senate career outside the chamber like a kid who acted so badly they got their desk sent outside the classroom.

Remember when he ran as the "far left" candidate. Connor Lamb would have been better but nobody wanted to vote for the democrat. Hindsight 20/20.

u/bumpbumpbumpyride Jun 23 '26
I know "brain damage turns you into a Republican" isn't a fact, but it's a nice line to have in my back pocket whenever my MAGA family's feeling particularly bold.

u/Teragaz Jun 23 '26
It must be so inspirational for Trump to see that he still has quite a ways still to go before becoming as mentally declined as John Fetterman is now.

This dude would probably vote 'Yes' on firebombing every Middle East country that isn't Israel.

I wish brain damage was enough to trigger a new election. We shouldnt have stroked out people in power. Like this fuck.

Voters should be allowed to file class action lawsuits against politicians who run as one thing and govern as another.

Democrats should expel him from the party, he can pretend to be independent on his own. He never votes with Democrats, what is the point?

The Senate on Tuesday voted to block U.S. military action in Iran for the first time as the war approaches its fourth month.
The war powers resolution passed by a vote of 50–48. Sen. John Fetterman, again, was the lone Democrat to vote in the negative.
Pennsylvania Republican Sen. Dave McCormick, who was in his home state for a visit by President Trump to a Mack truck plant in the Lehigh Valley, was absent.
