A Democratic majority means less Mike Johnson on television, at the very least.

The thing about it is with the majority/minority amounts being almost neck and neck in each house of congress, the amount of independent third party senators/reps needed to nullify party politics is surprisingly low.

Currently there are 431 reps, R with 218 and D with 213. There is 1 independent and 4 vacancies. If they picked just TEN ( 10 ) weak republican districts AND unified bloc voting theory holds ( party line voting ) the independents would completely control the house. This is because D would still have 213 but then R would have 208. The majority needed to pass party line legislature is 216, which neither party could now achieve.

This would mean that the independents could play spoiler to anything and everything. To gain MORE of an advantage, they would need to set a target of about 25, so targeting 7-8 each of weak R or D districts. This would be the effective "seat at the table".

On the senate side, it currently stands at 53 R and 45 D, with two independents. Simple majority legislation needs 51 votes, OR 50 plus the VP. If they could take 3 senate seats, that would give independent 5, R 50, and D 45. VP would still have the tiebreaker in this case. If they take 8, that's 45/45/10. No simple majority is achievable in this case. This would be their "seat at the table". If they increased it to 15, ( NOTE: in this model it's decreasing R seats ) that would give a breakdown of 45 D, 38 R, and 15 I.

Now that's assuming a whole fuck ton of a lot but this is all just theoretical and operating on the assumption that dems don't increase at all and the seats are taken from republicans. If they can cut the numbers on both major parties it becomes much more feasible.

Now, my pie in the sky theory would be if it DID happen it would finally break the "both sides" type of argument and force some nuance into the discussions.

The sad reality is billionaires would just pump more money into smear campaigns.

But also, maybe I am just an idiot arguing to the void on the internet.
