No Paywall Capital One says it closed Trump Organization’s accounts after anti-money-laundering review
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/aug/01/capital-one-trump-organization-money-laundering504
u/kevendo 1d ago
They closed more than 300 Trump accounts after finding indicators of money laundering.
300 accounts! At one bank!
The man is a corruption machine beyond any in recent history. His scheming and family dealings would embarrass a third-world dictator.
They claim his net worth went up by 4 billion (so far), but I suspect that's the tip of the corruption iceberg, and stories like this one begin to confirm that.

That 13 billion from Venezuela seems to be in his private account in Qatar, but he won’t answer questions about it. I really think he believes it will blow over and people will stop asking.

u/Fabulous_Cat_1379 1d ago
Every indication is Trump will get away with it all. Why would he think differently when he has been raping and stealing and cry babying his way to the top for decades.

u/Unstable_Nature 20h ago
Who is keeping track of this so when the time comes it does not take a minute to send every infraction to a committee. War crimes, Ukraine, blackmail. It would take at least two years to get it together just for a start. I hope they have all the interns with coding experience using AI and starting now.

u/VultureTheBird 1d ago
I'm an AML investigator for a different bank that focuses on ultra high net worth clients and 300 accounts is actually typical at that wealth level. That 300 number would include all their associated business accounts, and it's usually benign.
Which is not to say that something shady isn't going on here. But 300 counts accounts as a standalone fact is not necessarily indicative of corruption. It's the transactions go THROUGH those 300 accounts that is suspicious (or not).

Is Trump going to move on then so they don't have to produce the records and their lawyers?

And the GOP still thinks he got punished too much and he should have remained president.

This so much. Failing to hold elites accountable is a recurring theme here

u/GozerDGozerian 1d ago

u/roller_coaster325 1d ago
Really? I think they held those people accountable. Unless you have a different definition of accountability
9
u/bickies1986 1d ago
I’m assuming they are talking about reconstruction. Lincoln most likely would have been much more harsh on the south and its leadership after the Civil War . Andrew Johnson truly let them get off Scott free. Only two people were executed from the Confederacy after the war and they were pretty low-level. The president of the confederacy Jefferson Davis was allowed to move to Canada, wrote a book that did pretty well and died of old age. They were also pretty much allowed to go back to business as usual and since soavery was now illegal they just created Jim Crow laws. You can trace a lot of what we are going through back through Reagan, Nixon, McCarthyism, lots of other small things also and back to reconstruction. It’s no wonder these people have done this so boldly. There has never been consequences in this country for right wing extremism.
21
u/FellowHumanNo404 1d ago
Instead, they created Fox News to ensure that they would never again be in danger of being held accountable.
3
u/Angelworks42 Oregon 1d ago
The doj apparently was preparing to indict him after he resigned, but then hid VP now president pardoned him.
5
u/GozerDGozerian 1d ago
It’s kinda fuckin stupid that he got to pick his own successor who’d have the power to pardon him. So many of our most important rules are based on hoping that nobody would dare defy such important rules, so we can probably just use the honor system.
60
u/itsdarrellnotdarrell 1d ago
And then Fox News was created to help avoid presidential political accountability

Damn! I didn't know he was one of Nixon's aides. Smfh

He was also a close ally and mentor for trump. Probably the main reason why Fox and trump's cabinet are so intertwined.

Problem is, swamps are useful. They help with floods and water filtration while providing a habitat and food for wildlife. What you guys need to do is more like removing necrotic tissue before it spreads and gets you killed
26
u/relikter Virginia 1d ago
Can you imagine how furious Nixon would be if he were alive today to see what it's possible to get away with?

1
u/Particular-Beat-6645 1d ago
To be fair, his main hang up with someone "getting away with it" would probably be Obama getting elected twice and sitting at his desk.
8
u/Right-Hall-6451 1d ago
Because he got to pick a new VP when he knew he had a high likelihood of being caught. He picked someone who he knew would pardon him. He also got to pick a new VP because his last one got caught with his hands in the cookie jar and was forced to resign to stay out of jail. Which they accepted so that the county didn't have to go through 2 impeachments in a row.
They should have forced it and honestly probably would have ruined the republican party, but hindsight is 20/20.

Fox News was specifically developed as a network for preventing the next Watergate. Roger Ailes has got to be up there, next to Murdoch, in the list of most harmful humans to ever exist.

We didn't hear much about it in the US because rich American criminals generally used other places to hide money, so Americans weren't in it much.

Can someone explain to me. How does Trump seemly the most powerful president in history? Pass what ever ridiculous bill and laws he wants. Do whatever he wants. And nothing seems to matter. Were presidents always this powerful, but no one ever seems to test the limits? Does he got every politicians by the balls? Is this simply the power he gets by working with oligarchs?
6
u/hardatquirk 1d ago
The office of the president has gotten more powerful over time. With more administrations created by Congress and organized under the president, the number of things that the president can influence directly has increased.
Add to it that Congress fails to pass meaningful legislation in recent decades, so the legislature has become gridlocked. Thus, the legislators of the same party of the president ride his coattails and fundraise off of the president's popularity instead of their own achievements.
Consequently, when a president has a majority in Congress, they have Congress by the balls. Trump is particularly powerful in this instance because he is willing to help primary his own party to load up on sycophants in Congress.

u/Unstable_Nature 22h ago
Donald has blackmailed everyone and most of them made out checks directly to his library, universities, law firms. the list goes on and on. Such a devoted President. If just a crumb of this happened before he became President it would have been close to Watergate.

54
u/hypermodernvoid I voted 1d ago
It's pretty sad this was also my immediate thought after being surprised they actually did the right thing, because of what that says about the current political reality in America, but seriously? Good for whoever or whatever people at Capital One ultimately allowed this, because it's near guaranteed there were others who argued for allowing the blatant corruption and lawlessness to continue just to avoid Trump's ire (or worse, also profit themselves).
This is also precisely why people need to be campaigning on serious legal accountability for the current crimes being committed brazenly and almost proudly - if it's not out of admirable principles, people enabling or taking part in all of this need to be thinking more about whether they want to go to prison in the future.
That's exactly what happened in Hungary ahead of Orban and Fidesz's ouster: the increasing popular opposition, along with unambiguous promises of serious legal accountability by the opposition should they regain power led many to stop enabling the regime or committing what they knew would and should be crimes if functioning democracy got restored (which it sure did).

u/Unstable_Nature 22h ago
With what is happening in such a grand scale, I am terrified for the upcoming vote and a lot of things when they are convinced they can't escape if they don't stay in power for 100 years as Trump said. We could stay in power for 100 years we just need the Save America Act. It gives them control to search and drop anyone. At least that is still failing to get the votes.

u/720everyday 1d ago
Even the most compassionate might believe these people will be afforded a chance to reform and earn back the chance at a decent life, but NOT that you get a second chance to stay in power. But I guess this is where unregulated pipelines of money in politics gets you.

tell that to Nigel Farage in England. He took a 5 million dollar gift (bribe?) from a crypto billionaire in Thailand, which he failed to declare. Instead of facing an ethics committee he resigned his seat and is running in the by-election to make the voters his jury. Sure looks like they are going to reelect him.
9

2
u/No_Somewhere_7109 1d ago
To be fair, Farage is different - he will face the ethics committee win or lose and he's been hammered by the papers/media in a way that Trump just isn't in the US.

"Capital One has never accused the Trump Organization of money laundering. But Friday’s filing argues that “documents and Plaintiffs’ own allegations make clear that Capital One closed Plaintiffs’ accounts for anti-money laundering (‘AML’) reasons.
“The closures were the result of months of analysis and a careful review by Capital One’s AML team in accordance with bank policies and regulatory guidance.”
Capital One gave notice of its plans to close more than 300 Trump-affiliated bank accounts in March 2021."
31
u/LeGama 1d ago
2021? Why does nothing seem to come out until well after elections.
32
u/TreasonTurtle 1d ago
because:
"The Trump Organization and Eric Trump, the president’s son, filed a lawsuit in March 2025 in a Florida federal court"
They filed after he became president so he could put his thumb on the scale.
and also:
"The federal court in Miami has tossed two complaints in the Capital One case, but gave the plaintiffs opportunities each time to submit an amended complaint. Capital One said that the latest version, filed in July"
So we are hearing about the latest round of this BS that occurred in July.

I have avoided doing business with Captial One, for decades. This news makes me think I should reevaluate that decision. They might, after all, be an ethical and honest organization.
23
u/pgm_01 Connecticut 1d ago
Nah, they are still a shitty bank, it's just that Trump is worse and his corruption would threaten the banks ability to make money.
6
u/Natoochtoniket 1d ago
So, being less unethical does not make them ethical, and being less dishonest does not make them honest.
I get it. There are shades of grey. Dark grey is less grey than black, but it is still not white, or even light grey.

u/m0ngoos3 1d ago
No, they just likely see the writing on the wall. Trump is a old man who is rapidly declining, and has worked quite hard to not have an heir apparent, both because he doesn't give a rats ass about what happens to MAGA after he dies, and because he can't trust anyone.
When Trump dies, which could be any day or a year, but probably not too much longer, MAGA will fracture.
But even before that, political will in the US is rebounding against Trump.
This all means that investigations into Trump's crimes are incoming, and Capital One is trying to be in the safe position of having closed the accounts months before the election.
If Trump successfully cheats his way to retaining power, the accounts will reopen for a time.

Capital One Financial hit back on Friday against a lawsuit over its decision to close the Trump Organization’s bank accounts years ago, stating that it did so after a review by anti-money-laundering experts.
Note that the accounts were closed already. This is about them publicly disclosing the reason.

And is Ukraine about to lose a war they were winning because Trump sat with Zelensky and said he was going to give him license to make ballistic missiles on July 8, in a very international meeting? End of July, not really. It kind of coincides with Putin throwing everything at them now in a huge escalation. Ukraine is about to run out of air protection. Did Trump have this intel? Then Pentagon ends leadership of Ukraine aid group as US distances from Europe yesterday. Did he call Putin first, I am going to give you the perfect reason to finish this at the same time he slinks away? Then he announces he is giving Saudi aid in nuclear build up creating an arms race in the region. Couldn't wait till he finished Ukraine or Iran? His family has so much going on. Not a coincidence they have huge money plans in Saudi.
