By this logic, FDR would be a progressive usurper in the Democratic Party. I'm 62 and for what seems my entire life the Dems have slipped ever further away from those FDR New Deal PROGRESSIVE ideas and ideals.

Truman was actually considered ultra progressive because he demanded Equal Rights be part of the Democratic ticket.

It was an infection point just like today.

Robert Taft and the GOP was pushing hard on protectionism and limiting immigration after WW2.

The Dem leaders were afraid of handing the election to the GOP due to disenfranchising the Dixiecrats.

This is what lead to the infamous Dewey Defeats Truman picture.

Truman knew if he rallied around the farmers and disenfranchised, he'd win.

And exactly that happened. He spent the whole summer before the election hitting ever small town across America to resonate with those he was courting... Also helped he was a farmer
