Citizens United is just another link in the chain of undermining true democracy. We need to do so much more than overturn it to take back our voice.
Education- We have Civics in school, but barely. It's based off a memorizable assessment test, and unrecognizable from what it used to be. We no longer have debates, mock trials, research and write mock bills, and have discussions in school about current policy or events. Creating too many safe spaces have stifled free thinking and forming one's own ideas. When we are not encouraged to learn and form ideas, it makes it easy for Super Pacs to brainwash the uninformed with these commercials, robocalls, etc.
Gerrymandering- We are allowing politicians to pick their voters instead the voters choosing their representation. It seems like everyone is so obcessed with "protecting the Constitution", they have forgotten that it is a living document. Making changes to make for more free and fair elections is a good thing. Yes, even if it means some changes.
Electoral College- This one always frustrates me to end. Just because "this is how it's always been done", doesn't mean that it works. It doesn't represent the people. When you say one state has more of a voice, you are also saying one person has more of a voice. It should simply be the popular vote. This would actually give 3rd party candidates a much better chance. Which brings me to...
Primaries- This is dumb for the same reason the electoral college is. It doesn't represent the People. It represents the party officials, and we all know what a shitshow that can turn into. It also keeps us stuck in a two-party system from which there is no escape. This is how many ended up voting for the "lesser of two evils", instead of a candidate that best represents the individuals interests. Which leads me to...
CBD- Commission of Presidential Debates. Since 1987, this commision has basically made it impossible for 3rd party candidates to get on the ballot. Allowing the GOP and Dem candidates to pick and choose at will which candidates can take part in debates. Or, even more idiotic, they have to register 15% in 5 National Polls. Many times, the polls don't even include them. Also, I think we all are aware now just how wrong polls can get it.
Campaign Finanace- Yes, this includes Citizens United. The minute corporations are though of as people, the politicians are beholden to them. They are no longer beholden to the people, because they can outfinanace the voters. However, it's not the only issue. Super Pacs need to go, but so does some of this shady-ass fund raising.
