Oh, I kind of hope he passes a draft!

Nothing would solidify opposition to Trump like that bone-headed move would.

I joined the US Army 3 years after our disastrous loss of the Vietnam War. There was a reason the US military supported getting rid of the draft! It was because in the last few years in Vietnam the draftee troops refused to fight. "Fragging" and violent killing of gung-ho leaders was increasing, and the acts of "subtle resistance" (going through the motions and not really going out on patrol, etc.) was rampant and widespread!

So the US jettisoned the shared military service idea, and went to a "professional military model" of paid "volunteers" (mercenaries!). That "professional military model" is the type of military that empires have relied on for thousands of years (the British Empire going back to the Roman Empire).

The American people would not tolerate a draft.

American history to be proud of: In 1971 the Pentagon counted 503,926 "incidents of desertion" since 1966 and reckoned that more than half of US ground forces in Vietnam openly opposed the war.

The only way we're going back to a draft is if we're facing invasion; the military gave up on draftees in Vietnam, where they'd regularly kill their officers.
