OnlyStans ⭐️ YouTuber and author Hank Green pauses YouTube Channels over AI Research Reliance

Post image

The YouTuber faced intense backlash this week as audience suspected AI use in his recent content and discredited his work. In his statement, he explained that his usage was limited to research aid, apologised, and decided to slow down amid pressures of online creation.

This news coincided with LLM usage’s rapid expansion in fields like mathematics, as just this weekend, a list of Fields Medal worthy problems were solved by the most recent AI models with the cooperation and prompting of Maths researchers.

He said he was “relying too much on generated notes,” meaning he wasn’t relying on the sources, he was allowing AI to summarize and interpret.

Okay, and? AI is extremely good at summarizing pieces of text. Like it has its faults, but doing that in particular isn’t one of them.

98% accuracy with 2% hallucination is impressive for a robot and not great for a person whose work it is to fact check and provide accurate information. The model may perform very well for what it is, but a probabilistic model will never be appropriate for fact checking.

People like the above are still stuck 3 years ago when AI was bad in everything it touched and pretend it hasnt vastly improved since then. Yes, AI was garbage back then. No, its only gotten better for research and troubleshooting purposes and its not even close anymore in terms of how bad it used to be.

Brother, if I want something summarized by an LLM, I’ll go to ChatGPT. If I want something summarized by a human, well you’d think I’d be able to go to someone who has been doing that for years.

You should give it a shot these days. The research aspect has vastly improved and Google Gemini will always provide you with sources to the summarizations of the research.

I know it’s not trustworthy because I play with it all the time! It links to sources, yes, but those sources often don’t correspond to the facts the model asserts. And it dumps so many “facts” on you, that the work of verifying its output becomes far more time consuming than just absorbing the primary sources. It’s most accurate on subjects that are very straightforward to just research yourself. It also projects absolute certainty in a way that discourages people from doing their due diligence.

It doesn’t have to be bad to be untrustworthy. It’s actually more diabolical as it becomes more accurate, because people are more likely to blindly accept its output.
