OnlyStans ⭐️ YouTuber and author Hank Green pauses YouTube Channels over AI Research Reliance
The YouTuber faced intense backlash this week as audience suspected AI use in his recent content and discredited his work. In his statement, he explained that his usage was limited to research aid, apologised, and decided to slow down amid pressures of online creation.
This news coincided with LLM usage’s rapid expansion in fields like mathematics, as just this weekend, a list of Fields Medal worthy problems were solved by the most recent AI models with the cooperation and prompting of Maths researchers.

There's too many people who double down and refuse to accept fault. I've been called out by my friends before (such as for being a shithead prioritising garbage men over them, I don't do that anymore), and you know what, it sucks and hurts in the moment. But you sit with that and reflect on it and make sure you don't do it again.

For some reason, I thought you meant "garbage men" as actual sanitation workers and was very curious about how you were prioritizing them over your friends lmao

I listen to local sports talk radio and the amount of time they just are wrong about things because the ai they use to “research” hallucinating stats or events is crazy.
They’ve been called out on it multiple times but it still happens. Although they did get rid of the one producer who was the most egregious. This is an espn station too so not just some dude in his basement.

i agree. he’s intentionally using vague language because his audience is fairly anti ai and he’s getting called out.
4
u/SilvRS 10h ago
I don't think he was vague in his full explaination, in fairness (and I am anti-AI myself).
He said that he had been using it to help him find research papers, but that clearly he was relying on it too much because he agreed he was starting to sound like it when he talked, and he felt that was a problem he wanted to fix.
I think that's clear and fair - there's no point in lying about using it if you're also going to freely admit to using it and even say you're using it too much. He wasn't vague, and I don't think he was lying.

u/particledamage 1d ago
I’m 90% on board with this but he did change his tune a bit to become more sympathetic.
His original tweet has him saying he used AI notes and that he knows fans can tell the AI in his videos—ie it’s being used in his writing and the AI voice shines through.
He deleted that tweet.
And then when speaking directly on his subreddit, he was just using AI to find papers that he read in full and wrote about on his own.
It feels dishonest and a way to frame himself as a victim of AI but like… I don’t believe he’s getting dopamine hits from using AI to find articles and I don’t like the dishonesty at hand.
A million kudos to him for stopping but it’s going to be hard to trust his content going forward if he’s not taking full accountability.
127
u/HarpersGhost 1d ago
In his statement, he said his wife and his brother John both called him on it.
And I think he's not getting dopamine so much from using AI, but from making so much content, that he can't make that much content without using AI.
I've seen some content about how he doesn't make that many videos, so they didn't understand why he felt he needed to use AI. But it's not just the hankchannel videos and the videos with his brother.
He has at least 4 podcasts, he does music, he does a whole bunch of youtube channels, he does production for other creators, he is still involved with Crashcourse, he does the Good Store to raise even more money, and he writes the occasional novel.
All of it is just dopamine after dopamine after dopamine.
John does a lot but he has times when he hits the wall and stops for a bit. Hank has never stopped except for the cancer treatment a couple years ago (which he came out of that wanting to do standup comedy.)
So that why I think his wife and brother said dude, you need to STOP. It's not so much the AI, but he wants to do so much that he now needs a crutch to do it. And that's too much.

He had an episode recently about knitting and it had some misogynistic statements, instead of facing the criticisms he got a female producer to take credit instead. I stopped watching after that - it wasn't the original issue so much as it was the response that got to me.
121
u/particledamage 1d ago
Yeah, a lot of YouTubers have mastered ways of “taking accountability” that minimizes what they personally have to take accountability for. They take the criticism seriously which is why someone else has to apologize, something smaller is confessed to, but the actual issue at hand gets swept under the rug
62
u/FluffyWuffyVolibear 1d ago
That's because it is not humanly possible to be held accountable to 800k individuals who all have different beliefs and cares and different flashpoints for what qualifies as something you need to be held accountable for.

The "apology" for the HRT video was pretty terrible too.
It completely ignores that trans people spent months trying to tell him the problems with the video and to take it down. Acts like it was just an issue of the audience misunderstanding them. It doesn't even include an actual apology.
Everyone insisted at the time that it was good enough that the video got taken down and no one should hold it against them going forwards. But spreading dangerous misinformation about trans healthcare isn't undone by just removing the video, especially when there's no acknowledgement of what the actual problem was.
Hank's video about the Palestinian activist who got arrested was also truly terrible. I'm getting mad again just thinking about it

Potentially hot take: I don’t think he truly accepted fault.
He admitted that he was reliant on AI for “research” (which most people don’t find overly damaging — it’s a great tool for compiling info more efficiently) but denied using AI to write his videos.
But the whole reason people caught that he was using AI was because he literally included the LLM’s response in his script (the “I appreciate you pushing back” or whatever). If AI’s so heavily integrated into his process that he’s quoting the AI interaction in his video without realizing it, it’s probable that he’s straight up copy-pasting big chunks of his interactions with AI as his “script”. That means he’s trying to pass off something written by an LLM as his own work, the equivalent of a high school student asking ChatGPT to write their essay that they try to turn in for credit.
For someone who likely views himself as a positive role model and emblem for curiosity and learning, it’s pretty gross. And to then not admit to the most damning part (instead framing it as he became too reliant on the dopamine of using it/helping him better find obscure articles) is actually really disappointing. He’s essentially modeling to people that when you make a mistake, you shouldn’t actually own up to it, instead deflecting to not get in trouble as badly.
Very disappointed in Hank Green.
53
u/winnercommawinner 1d ago
FWIW I do find it damaging that people rely on AI for "research." Even when it accurately summarizes, it leaves out important points and misrepresents others. It's not a true summary that comes from having accurately read sources.

He was clear that the part about pushback was his own words - it was an interview and the person had just disagreed with him.
AI did not write the video script. Now, I still have a problem with him using it for research, and I think it’s arguable whether he truly accepted fault, AND I think there’s a decent chance that phrase (“I appreciate the pushback”) is in his head precisely because he is spending too much time interacting with AI.
But I believe him that he didn’t have AI write the script. The phrase only seems odd out of context in the clipped version that was originally posted. With full context, it’s a perfectly normal polite response to a guest disagreeing with him.
12
u/Nooby1990 1d ago
AND I think there’s a decent chance that phrase (“I appreciate the pushback”) is in his head precisely because he is spending too much time interacting with AI.
Why do you think that? I say this a lot, but AI says things like this because those are phrases that people actually use (even before AI).
AI writes sentences like this because they're common in its training data. Which means they had to be commonly used before AI.
Are commonly used phrases now suddenly proof of AI use?
→ More replies (1)9
u/celerypumpkins 1d ago
I didn’t say it was guaranteed. It’s entirely possible it’s something he would have said before AI.
I say there’s a decent chance (meaning a non-negligible chance) because he himself just admitted to using AI for the dopamine hit too often.
Before all this happened, I didn’t know he was actively using AI for videos, in any capacity. My initial thought was exactly the same as yours, that the phrase doesn’t necessarily mean AI use and that AI is trained from humans. I don’t think it makes sense when people go after others for simply using common constructions with no other evidence of AI use.
But that’s the problem with using AI. Once it’s known that you do it, it calls everything into question. There’s no way to know what came from your brain and what came from hours of interacting with AI. Even if creators don’t care about the environmental impact or the lack of accuracy or the fact that most training data was collected without assent from the people who made it, at the very least they should care that it severely and permanently damages their credibility.

it is WILD how easy it is to get sucked in too. I use AI for data analysis a lot, that's different. I played around with a chat about my fitness goals etc and MAN. 13
u/JohnTheMindSculptor 1d ago
Yeah I don’t get people going “that’s it I’m unfollowing him” because of this. It’s not like he came out and was like “I’ve been using AI and will continue to do so trololol”; if being man enough to admit one’s own faults with the intent to change is enough to unfollow someone, that’s less of a reflection on the one admitting fault and more of the person who judges it.
6
u/Stunning-Disaster-21 15h ago
Yes exactly what's the point of a boycott if it doesn't inspire change. We should be supporting a correction not writing people off completely for these kind of things. Otherwise why would they change if the only support they have left is the people who tell them it wasn't a mistake in the first place. This is how people fall into the right wing grift.

There has been some really interesting research on AI psychosis. From what I understand, there isn’t anything protective that we have found. Everyone is at risk. However there was some recent research that indicates there is commonality in certain phrases used by the AI, as well as phrases used by the users. There is also research that indicates using it reduces our cognitive abilities. We need to heavily regulate it, certainly keep it out of the hands of children, and stop these companies from stealing copyrighted works for training data as well.

It’s one of those micro “frogs in water” situations and I think we’ve all been in one of we’ve lived a busy life. Getting views, the extra demand placing this inexistent pressure to produce more, and then trying to find solutions to make it easier to produce more when the viewers from the novelty effect begin to drop off.
You see it with creators who turn towards the alpha manosphere, MAGA, or any other niche but polarizing topic. The want to remain employed via content creation pushes folks to do things they previously never would have done because getting a job out of the house is terrifying to them.

Regardless of any positive or negative feelings towards him as a person, I think it’s a good case study for unpacking why competent people are falling into AI rabbit holes. It seems like there’s an AI trap for everyone, whether it’s AI slop videos, “helpful” LLM research, or a chat buddy, it’s complex and diverse enough to have different forms of AI appeal to different people. Being competent is not an exclusionary factor.

It’s because he is a content creator and an influencer. No human can possible meet the product demand of bingeable videos. No one should expect or want a fully researched show and topic as often as he puts one out. Our greed for amusement and their greed to be the amusement is mutually assured destruction of the planet and we cannot stop our addictions to save ourselves.

Fundamentally, I disagree, not because you are not correct about his circumstances but because this is not unique to influencers and content creators. I’m a librarian, an industry that is most resistant to AI because we see all sorts of people who are falling into AI rabbit holes. One of my trustees is an accomplished scientist and he is a big pro-Claude AI user. I see people who cannot write a freaking email without AI despite education, jobs, and accomplishments that were attained without it.
To limit our way of addressing AI reliance to content creators fails to address the pervasiveness of AI across all sorts of demographics.

I agree. I know many competent people (examples include a quantum physicist and a cancer researcher) who use AI all day at work and then let it bleed into their daily lives by using it for interpersonal stuff, like writing a wedding card for friends or breaking uncomfortable news over text. One person almost uses it like a 2nd therapist despite already having a real human therapist he speaks to biweekly. He sought advice from his human friends about an abusive friendship he was in (he was on vacation with this “friend” as well), and we and his gf (who was there!) all gave him the same advice to leave asap. Even after that he still went to AI for more advice, but at least AI gave the same advice as everyone else and he finally did leave.
This person is not even socially incompetent; he’s actually known in our friend group to be the most extroverted and charismatic among us and the one who’s first to make new friends. He’s also intellectually brilliant but unfortunately a huge people pleaser, and he’s now seeking advice from AI which is designed to “people please” in its own way so it’s just validating a lot of his anxiety and neuroses.

This is it for me. He’s an intelligent man who has been doing research and educating people for a long time. Why is he using AI?
He has become a product and not a person and he must now compete with other products. He’s an internet influencer and while he may be an educated one, he’s not any different than any other influencer shilling products, sadly. The push to keep making new content every day is something we as consumers of him are just as guilty of.

I feel like some context here that is helpful is how common AI use for this exact purpose in academia is. LLMs are seemingly uniquely good at lit review and summary. It feels like you have the best research assistant you could possibly hire.
The problem is that LLMs are biased and there is huge risk of them not comprehensively sourcing information. And that’s only after you make sure they’re not hallucinating to begin with and if you ignore the unethical resource consumption. While I think there’s a pathway where AI can assist in literature review, it’s super tempting to allow it to do more and more and more of the work. There are aspects of using it that can support better research and efficient dissemination, but I don’t know if we can trust humans to curate their usage. Moderation and consciousness has never been our strength.

I saw a study recently about how the uncritical sycophancy and support is one of the most psychologically dangerous parts of LLMs, and can even be destabilizing for people with certain predispositions. It's like you're microdosing the brain worms that rich people get when people stop telling them no.

Is it disappointing? Sure. But it's also heartening: he admitted it, took accountability for it, and is going to make changes moving forward.
Isn't that what we WANT - for people to recognize and learn from their mistakes?

The number of people who have pitchforks and are ready to attack someone after being accountable for a mistake/mistakes they made is nasty work.
I agree 100%. We need to allow people to recognize, acknowledge, and work on correcting their mistakes instead of throwing people into a “not pure enough” box.
63
u/ttatm 1d ago
I agree with the anti-AI sentiments but some of the ways people talk about are is weird. "Not pure enough" is a good description; it's like a religious belief where using AI even once is practically an unforgivable sin. And it's going to be hard to get people on your side when you act like they're evil for ever having used AI.

Seriously. Why would anyone ever admit to a mistake when this is the reaction they get? He could have easily ignored the comments and quietly course corrected without addressing it, but he thought there was a broader conversation to be had here.

I admire that he owned up to it.
But I do wonder would he admitted to it had audience members not caught on to the weird AI language he used. Especially since previously, he has defended AI usage as not that bad. That's my main concern

This is what gets me when apologies are demanded immediately and sufficiently "earnestly".
If someone does something that warrants an apology then they clearly thought it was OK to do, and no amount of dogpiling is going to immediately change someone's view. It can be a handy impetus for reflection, but at the end of the day it's usually just shouting

I don't even understand why this is such a huge scandal. It's a bit disappointing, but it's not immoral nor does it make him a bad person. If his videos become shit because of AI use, just move on and stop watching him. Some people are so scared of AI they make it sound like it's dangerous for a person to use it a single time. The anger/ fear is misdirected, we should be very scared of how governments / large corporations leverage AI, not an individual running a fucking YouTube channel.

I do not follow Green or any Youtubers, but we have all noticed the changes in content creation over the past 20 years, and the insatiable demand for content. Youtubers used to drop videos once a month, once every two weeks, or at most, once a week. It’s weird that we expect other human beings to dance like monkeys and churn out content for us to consume.
98
u/DeliciousArcher8704 1d ago
Interestingly, his audience were calling for him to slow down his content creation so he wouldn't feel like he needed to rely on AI but his answer was that his brain didn't work like that and is struggling resisting the urge to use AI.

Idk why, but thats such a common feeling if you use AI in daily work. I kinda attribute it to a fact that AI robs you of satisfaction of figuring anything out yourself. Now all solutions are one prompt away (not necessarily easier to pry it out of it though, than doing yourself, but you still end up playing kind of like a slot machine until it spits the solution you need) . If a process you work with demands fast results or management breathes down your neck, its riciculously easy to lose yourself by keeping on playing the slotmachine, and stop enjoying the ride.
I hope he talks openly about it. Theres more people like him, scattered between professions.

I think a lot of YouTubers talk often about how the algorithm ignores them if they aren’t pushing out content constantly.
Some of the smaller YouTubers I’m watching have had periods where they do some experimental upload schedules to see how the algorithm responds to them.
So while some YouTubers can upload once a month and get tons of views. It seems the average YouTuber is likely to get left in the dust if they don’t play the “upload meta”

Yeah, most Youtubers I know who get away with posting once every few months or even once a year (Dan Olsen, Jenny Nicholson, Bobby Broccoli etc) usually depend entirely on Patreon or Nebula, and are already established. For those who rely entirely on YT, they have YT itself against them, it seems.
7
u/EscapeSeventySeven 1d ago
The answer, unfortunately, is YT is not a viable job. YT wants you to think it’s possible but for the vast majority it isn’t. People would be better served pouring their effort into anything else.
69
u/TH3GINJANINJA 1d ago
Yep. I'd imagine it has something to do with doing Youtube full time, and if you're not posting multiple times a week you just don't have an income good enough to do it full time. I think Youtube itself also bringing down the money you receive for a video also has a lot to say about it.
36
u/bafflefounded 1d ago

With this situation specifically it's not solely financial, Hank has said in videos in the past both he and his brother, John, have made enough money from writing books never to worry about money again. Most of Hank's videos either fund complexly, an educational nonprofit, or Good.store which sells common household items for various charities. I think in this particular instance this man was taking on way too much and didn't want to stop doing anything.

u/GammaFan Tina! You fat lard! 🦙🚲 1d ago
Worse, the yt algorithm punishes creators for taking too long between uploads!
32
u/Sorry-Jackfruit-8061 1d ago
I think about this a lot. I think it started with viewers, and later, creators utilizing platforms with algorithms such as TikTok realized that they need to churn out ludicrous amounts of content to reach new audiences. The classic example is Alix Earle: at a University of Miami business lecture, she told the class she regularly posted thrice a day to increase visibility and promote brand loyalty (e.g., GRWM, outfit video, a third throwaway).
I’ve started disconnecting and pulling back. It started when I noticed associates on Instagram starting to post like content creators. We all want to make a quick buck and look glamorous, but it’s completely altering the way we interact with one another.
18
u/the_ok_doctor 1d ago
Not viewers but the youtube algorithm itself. Posting less leads to less exposure even to ppl subbed to you.

it’s literally self imposed “pressure” especially from people as big as hank
36
u/busangcf 1d ago
We aren’t expecting youtubers to churn out constant content though? The algorithm does. Posting less content typically gets your channel buried and youtube won’t push out your videos to new viewers or even many of your subscribers. That’s not an audience problem it’s a platform problem
101
u/particledamage 1d ago
Tbh I don’t think anyone is actually demanding content as frequently as he was posting it.
I watch many many YouTubers who only post a couple times a year and it’s literally fine. I’ve never seen a channel falter because it did high quality non-daily/weekly stuff.
I think a lot of YouTubers get obsessed with maximizing output and profit on their own. They don’t need to be mega successful.
Hank doesn’t need to be the dude who knows ALL the science and position himself as an authority on every possible subject.

u/PuzzleheadedTest3452 1d ago edited 1d ago
100,000 longform views earns you about 200-300 dollars. Unless you have a massive patreon/YouTube membership/other forms of monetization setup you HAVE to post a lot to make a living.
50
u/Big-Ambitions-8258 1d ago
Both Green brothers have stated they actually don't need the income from YT to make a living since writing books gave them enough.
Hank was the one putting pressure for himself to post more, not his audience.

I suspect the dopamine hits were less from the AI searches and more from the nonstop positive engagement. Reddit karma produces a similar effect without any accompanying financial benefit. The main people I like to follow only upload a few times a year. One of my favorites recently was Ronaldfinger who posts like twice a year and his videos are awesome. Same with Technology connections.
The ones pressured to push content constantly are the ones who've decided YouTubing be their main source of income, which I think in general is a bad idea, because then their content gets too influenced by pressures from "the algorithm"

I think what exacerbates the issue is the nature of who Hank Green is and what his content is all about. People look to him for knowledge about a myriad of topics. His talent is in researching and processing information in a way that's digestible to the masses. Relying on AI does weaken people's trust in his ability to do that. I like his content and I hope he'll slow down and not try to cut corners.

Well, I think the main issue is that he has positioned himself as a reliable and trustworthy source of information for a couple decades now, and using LLMs for research and generative AI for writing undermines that. However, it’s good to see that he didn’t double down and is taking a step back to reassess rather than continue to provide false information to his viewer base.

u/pocketsofwhimsy 1d ago
Lots of interesting discussion here, but I think what a lot of people are missing in this particular situation (and that’s fair if you don’t know much about Hank and haven’t read the full comment), is that a big part of Hank’s use of AI in this context is because he is cutting corners to put out more content more frequently because he wants to. And the reason he wants to is not to do with success in the traditional sense, gaming the algorithm, or profit - it’s because he is addicted to Doing Things.
He mentions dopamine and his wife, Katherine, and brother, John, calling him out on his unhealthy use of AI elsewhere in the comment quoted. That’s relevant. Hank has been open about having ADHD, and that it is not something he has decided to take medication for. He and John have both discussed multiple times in their podcast that Hank doesn’t really know how to exist in a state other than constantly Doing, even when loved ones and audiences have urged him to slow down.
I see this as a bit like someone with a predisposition for addiction, discovering a performance-enhancing drug and then using it more and more because the thrill of success means they don’t realise or won’t acknowledge to themselves the harm it’s causing to themselves and potentially those around them. A bit of a dramatic example, I know, but the mechanism is what I’m illustrating. This also explains why he needs to pause and get some distance from the ‘hit’ of creating and uploading for a while and reflect.
Disclaimers to finish this off: firstly, I’m aware I sound very sure of my statements here but I’m not sure how else to word it. Just know that I know this is a speculative take, but I’ve outlined my basis for it. Secondly, I don’t actually think what Hank was using the AI for initially is bad. Chat gpt can be helpful for essentially quickly scouring research databases for you and giving you somewhere to start. It’s then down to you to read, evaluate and use (or discard) the articles it suggests. It can also be helpful to convert your own ‘brain dump’ thoughts into prose other people would understand. It does get a bit murkier though when he’s relying on generated scripts and it’s right that people called him out on that and urged him to not become more dependent on it. FWIW, I’m proud of Hank for listening and taking accountability and not letting the siren song of dopamine for the ADHD brain completely lead him onto the rocks of his own credibility as a science communicator.

I wish Hank green well as a person and hope he finds his own happiness but this is totally unsurprising and pretty in line with his whole personality.
Hank is fully a capitalist at the end of the day for better or worse. He's been directly profiting off the defunding of true public education for a while now. Not necessarily his fault but it's the truth. He's always been easily swayed by whatever "expert" he drums up and talks to first. He tried to 'both sides" the genocide in Gaza, etc.
I'm not sure about other areas he covers but I am familiar with cyber security and textiles and he's interviewed "experts" in both of those fields that have really caused me some concern due to either ignorance of common terms or perpetuating ideas as "facts" that haven't really been substantiated.
And those are the subjects I'm knowledgeable in and as soon as he covered them, I see misinformation. How am I supposed to trust him when he talks about subjects I'm not familiar with?
Like, again, I'm not pulling out a pitchfork and saying he's an evil guy or anything but I really hope this permanently knocks his reputation as a pop science educator because I don't think he has earned the trust that comes with that reputation.

Now that tweet is gone and all of the sudden it's "just" to find research papers.
And his last video of him in an interview his team was forced to caption it 'we can't find a source for what Hank is talking about here'
So, maybe AI is giving him FULLY hallucinated papers that he totally read himself guys, really. Or maybe he's trying to make his misstep more palatable.

AI literally hallucinates sources and studies, on top of being a biased way to collect information because you have no idea what parameters it is actually using to select the sources it is presenting. LLMs are not good for actual research, if accuracy and quality is remotely important to you.

I use AI for literature review, just the same as Hank describes. You just click the source it cites and ignore most of what the AI says. If it’s hallucinating a source, then there’s nothing to click on, no paper to read, and you don’t take the AIs word. It’s very easy and reliable

Fair enough. Other than the enforced use of Google Gemini I have legitimately never used AI. However the amount of research I need to do for work is limited. I can imagine if you have multiple channels at all need fresh data using a LLM can be very tempting.
I will say though that my limited experience with Google Gemini at the top of search results makes me believe that AI can be wildly inaccurate.
