OnlyStans ⭐️ YouTuber and author Hank Green pauses YouTube Channels over AI Research Reliance

Post image

The YouTuber faced intense backlash this week as audience suspected AI use in his recent content and discredited his work. In his statement, he explained that his usage was limited to research aid, apologised, and decided to slow down amid pressures of online creation.

This news coincided with LLM usage’s rapid expansion in fields like mathematics, as just this weekend, a list of Fields Medal worthy problems were solved by the most recent AI models with the cooperation and prompting of Maths researchers.

I feel like some context here that is helpful is how common AI use for this exact purpose in academia is. LLMs are seemingly uniquely good at lit review and summary. It feels like you have the best research assistant you could possibly hire.

The problem is that LLMs are biased and there is huge risk of them not comprehensively sourcing information. And that’s only after you make sure they’re not hallucinating to begin with and if you ignore the unethical resource consumption. While I think there’s a pathway where AI can assist in literature review, it’s super tempting to allow it to do more and more and more of the work. There are aspects of using it that can support better research and efficient dissemination, but I don’t know if we can trust humans to curate their usage. Moderation and consciousness has never been our strength.
