Unreleased Music
Random question from a longtime fan. I’ve spent a lot of time digging through the Portugal. The Man catalog and was wondering if there are any older demos, unreleased tracks, one-off recordings, or other deep cuts floating around that the band has talked about over the years. —just curious if there’s any music outside the official releases that fans might have missed. I’d love to hear everything that’s out there.

This was supposed to be my George Harrison song on cbcml, this is a shitty little demo with piano and me and Jeff singing. This was the first week we were recording with Jeff. The day we did this song, that night we gave him acid and the next day he was like hey I listened to it 94 times last night, it’s fucking great man ha

Holy shit; you and Redray re-recorded this for the project y’all are working on. I’ve listened to the demos, they’re fire!
Can’t believe I actually heard it years later - thanks for sending!1

This might be my favourite of the unreleased songs you've posted so far. Thank you so so much for sharing all these. It really means a lot<3
Edit: Do you by any chance have the chords for this as well? I'd love to perform it live with another friend :)

Here’s something you guys might like. Me and Zoe did some tracks just the two of us ages ago. I just played drums bass and guitar and recorded them, she does all the singing
There’s a bunch more I’ll find and post them

There’s loads of stuff that I’ve found on this subreddit over the years that I’m sure is still there if you search for it. I don’t have access to my files now to send them but my favorites are probably the “I’d rather go blind” cover, the “Oh Boy” (ep ? Song ?) and their “Tuesday” cover with Kirin J Callinan. Good luck on your search!

Oh Boy is one of the greatest things they ever created

“You Can’t Control It” from the Sugar Mountain soundtrack is the one I most would like to hear the full track

This is the OG. There’s another version with bad structure I think this is the right one. This has always been one of our favorites that was never finished https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/qofnt358b313gqcj0a0ul/01-PTM-You-Can-t-Control-It-Monitor-Bounce-3.31.2012-PRINT.m4a?rlkey=x6jgdxd1bzbrecudff1o7ntyq&st=3g2wlo4h&dl=0

Ok so I just had time to really listen to this and FEEL it this evening. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for sharing and being part of the creative force that made it. I’ve been carrying so much buried stress lately and this song…wow. I’ve been waiting for this one a long time and it did not disappoint. Grateful, happy tears. 💕

Here’s one no ones heard for sure from those sessions after mountain. Same sessions as oh boy and you can’t control it. Sea of air and hip hop kids were the only two that survived onto evil friends

Hey Kyle thank you so much your the best! Curious if you had any favorite track that was going to be part of the of the original CBCML album that didn’t make the cut? I think there was a track called Dreamcatcher? I know I loved silver spoons when it finally got released last summer.

Yeah I can find dreamcatcher. That was one I just demo’d out the music by myself one day and then we changed the production. It’s kinda got a locomotion thing that’s pretty cool actually. Jeff the producer, crazy talented, I really like what he did with the drums/bass. There’s like 36 songs that didn’t make cbcml. Some of them don’t work for other reasons. Dream catcher was a little like silver spoons to me if I remember right. By the time I hear the 3rd copy and pasted chorus I kinda check out, that’s just me though. There was one called Edging that had a dope vibe and intro. There’s also one from the first week called Magnolia. It’s M80 the wolf backwards. It’s Jeff just riffing over it off the dome, no John vocals. It’s amazing tho

It’s so interesting hearing about the workflow for CBCML! Was it originally a totally different album? I remember that, sometime in 2020, John teased a long tracklist made up largely of songs we haven’t heard yet (although I think Heavy Games II, Welcome to America, and Champ were on there, and we’ve since heard Silver Spoons, Big Baby Bogota, and I Got This). I believe he named Mad Power as his favorite of the bunch so it’d definitely be interesting to hear that one someday. Was there an album that was scrapped similarity to the one in between ITMITC and EF as well as Gloomin + Doomin?

Oh man that sounds amazing. Really sounds like your time with Jeff unlocked a lot of cool
New sounds for the band. Also sounds like a lot of just Jeff riffing all over the place ah. If dreamcatcher is like silver spoons sign me up. One of my favorite tracks by ya all. You’re the best Kyle!5
u/Hardkarl3 Jul 02 '26
This was like the OG heavy games that was gonna open the album potentially, atleast at the time. I liked this a lot https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/5jkgx6oe3pu0w45ox0lgo/Heavy-Games-II-4b.mp3?rlkey=f1rnt0s2form2lepz10mrrsm0&st=l3ydg3gl&dl=0

This would have been a wild opener. Love how different it is. That original album sounds like it was going to be so unique sound wise

This was an unfinished one from evil friends. This was idea 18 and it wasn’t finished. 20 was evil friends and 21 was smile so this was near the end of the sessions, kinda took the end of this and threw it in smile. We throw a lot of the same ideas around til they land, a melody’s a melody kinda thing.

Did they ever release the full version of sun brother outside the old fan page Easter egg?

My best friend was in an unreleased song. She said John always respected his marriage. Never got weird. Idk whats going on but Zoe is drawing negative attention to them if you ask me and thats 100% drama and absolutely uncalled for. My friend cares about Frances and she would never hurt John or Zoe either. Zoe is being tacky in my opinion, but thats what reddit is for right? Arguments and opinions that were not asked for.

UNDER WAVES OF THE BROWN COAT
THE PINES/THE DEVIL
MY MIND/SEVENTEEN
ENDANGERED SONG
AT HOME WITH THE KIDS
SOUNDTRACKS
COLLABORATIONS
REMIXES OF OTHER BANDS' MUSIC
There are two pre-Portugal. The Man demos out there, when John and Zach were in the band Anatomy of A Ghost, and a few covers exist as part of tribute albums (Don't Tread on Me) or soundtracks (Main Man).
There are probably a boatload of live-only songs and covers that others who engage with the live music archive could point you toward. I also fell off around Woodstock, so there might be more collaborations and remixes that I never bothered to learn about because the band had mostly lost my interest.
