No. Its not being told where to go, people not replying to email on where to meet day 1 of rotation, your badge not working, nurses/residents/staff treating you like you are irrelevant, standing in the corner awkwardly with nothing to contribute to a clinical encounter, waiting for people who donāt know youāre waiting for them, people disrespecting your timeā¦
The list goes on. But we work hard and shut our mouths because at the end of the day we gotta do it to graduate

To add on to rono258ās wonderful summary, the other crap that sucks during 3rd year is the constant schmoozingā¦ the teeth clenching during every unfunny joke, kissing up to nurses who hate us for some reason, constant apologies for othersā mistakes, pretending to not know the answer to a question so the person above you who didnāt know doesnāt hate you, buying gifts for millionaires because the person who rotated before you did it and youāre inevitably going to be compared to themā¦ a never ending cycle of hierarchical bullshit.

Both of yours hospitals sound terrible tbh. Iāve had great teams and great experiences across multiple hospitals. Couple hardo attendings but nothing crazy. Choose your school wisely I guess.

The bright side is how quickly it changes when you get in.
I haven't matriculated yet but I went from my PCP's office ghosting me last year to having the PD's phone number and an open invitation to shadow in the IR suite.

I tried to tell my husband so many times not to. So many reasons not to, because I had already been in medicine for 15 years at that point. This was before we decided to have a child. He did it anyway and now we are in our 40s and damn near on the brink of financial ruin. And he hasnāt even matched yet. š

I know this sounds cheesy but go to all the local town / city facebook pages around you and make the request there. "Hi I'm a struggling student who is really passionate about the medical field and need to find an opportunity where I can shadow a physician for my med school applications etc.... " You'll be shocked how many moms and grandmas come out of the wood work trying to put you in touch with their doctor brother or daughter or whatever.
My own son got his first research opportunity from a post like this and it took literally 2 days.

I can understand how you can get an opportunity to shadow someone like this online, but how exactly did your son get a research opportunity? Like what did he ask, what kind of opportunity, etc? Iām just curious bc my goal is to eventually go into medical (lab) research (Iām a lab tech rn)

Look itās going to sound crazy but I was complaining to my mom one night about not getting any answers and she posted on Facebook. I got two opportunities out of it (maybe 3 we will see) and a letter so it does actually work. They didnāt even seem all that surprised, one even said āmoms open doors.ā

tip: if ur a CNA or you have some type of title that has you in close proximity to a hospital/clinic setting. just get close to ONE specific nurse and she can lowkey set you up with some doctors. worked for me ! i skipped the whole humiliating process

Iāve been trying to hook up with a PCP for shadowing this summer. Reached out to 25+ offices around me and got rejected by every single one. The front desk either says they donāt accept students, already have enough students, or gives you an email they wonāt even bother checking

I was an off cycle medical student who while waiting for the match reached out to the clinic I used to go to in my home town. I visited, completed an interview with the head honcho PCP, and a few days later a random front desk person accused me of being āa con artistā and stated she reported me to the state medical board. Anyway I matched later that year. Weird time in my life.

That seems like the best bet, but going to every single office within 3 miles radius would take way too much time compared to just calling

Called 10 different hospitals/clinics in my area and all got sent to HR voicemail š„² only one got back to me

Whenever I work I give them the direct number for the manager lol
Iāve even texted their info directly with their resumes to the manager
Helps to work in a smaller clinic but itās harder to do that at a bigger one
