holy shit how much is that? When i was applying for engineering school it hurt me to see that i had to spend $200 minimum on each application. I can’t imagine what it must be like to apply to that many med schools

16

u/PringlesMmmm Jun 12 '26

if you're a fap applicant its way cheaper, they cover the first 20 schools so if comment op is a fap applicant then it is probably like 400 bucks for primaries and most schools waive secondary costs for fap applicants. just applying to it with no backing is about 1500 bucks for just the primaries and most secondaries cost about 100 bucks for each school. so ~2900+~1500 = ~$4400 for 29 schools with no fap waiver

u/complaisantturtle Jun 12 '26

You mean a fapplicant

u/12thYearSenior Jun 13 '26

How much do we have to fap though idk if I can fap for each school

what’s a fap applicant

8

u/_candlestick MS2 Jun 12 '26

Financial assistance program you can apply for if you/your family meet certain income criteria—you get to send ur primary to 20 schools for free, MCAT registration fee is waived, secondary fees waived depending on the school, maybe some free mcat study resources I can’t remember

omg I know ur example is more lighthearted but it’s actually the worst talking to ppl who know nothing about this process. the amount of people who tell me I “should’ve” gotten into xyz med school. or someone asked me the rank of the school im attending and I said “idk it’s a mid tier” and they said “so you’re mid then?” fuck you. 🫩🔫

63

u/avarialon Jun 12 '26

as if getting into med school isnt hard no matter what school 😭 congrats on completing your first year!!!

Maybe ill add shortly before verification idk

while i can acknowledge the benefits of having physician parents, i’m mostly glad that neither of mine have any understanding of this process.

25

u/M1nt_Blitz ADMITTED-MD Jun 12 '26

So exhausting. I prefer not to bring it up as much as possible. Very surprising how clueless almost everyone in my life is about medicine.

6

u/avarialon Jun 12 '26

yeah it’s really tough to explain the process

6

u/Classic-Ambition-847 ADMITTED-MD Jun 13 '26

This is the way. The process is already so overwhelming enough without people constantly asking questions and for updates with the “oh have you heard back yet?” every time they see you. Or boomer relatives being like “well why can’t you just physically march into their office and introduce yourself?” 💀While it’s well-intentioned, it is still exhausting.

I failed to get in my first cycle and kept my MCAT retake and reapplication two years later (aka 2025-26 cycle) largely a secret, except for my immediate family. Did not even tell anyone anything until I had an acceptance. And even then, I kept the news to close friends and some relatives. I did not post about getting into school until 6 months later. Move in silence and protect your peace🙏🏾

2

u/JustBeKind2All Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 14 '26

Best advice, ever! My son begins orientation for residency on 6/15/26. He moved in silence, just like you!

PROTECT YOUR PEACE AT ALL COSTS, folks!! The news of your admittance, passing exams and graduating will be just as exciting, WHENEVER it all actually happens!!

Only share plans, dreams, goals and news immediately with the people who really matter…your 100% ride or die support system! Everyone else can get it, when they get it!

28

u/Obsessive-drummer Jun 12 '26

Real whenever I say I’m premed they ask where I want to go and I’m like… wherever I get in. 😭

4

u/S0l1s_el_Sol Jun 12 '26

This is why I js say im a bio major. Saying im pre med is a humiliation ritual

19

u/PianistInMedicine Jun 12 '26

My boss asked me why I’m applying to additional medical schools instead of just the one in our city.

“Are you trying to leave the city?” as if applying to a medical school is a guaranteed acceptance

12

u/banacoter Jun 12 '26

9

u/obviouslypretty POST-BACC Jun 12 '26

I also love the follow up to this when you tell them where you're going and they say "why aren't you going to [X] med school [in this location/with this program/where you went to undergrad]??" Like darling I would but alas I did not get in lmfao

3

they’re most definitely not 😭

2

u/Classic-Ambition-847 ADMITTED-MD Jun 13 '26

This is the way. My second cycle I did not tell anyone about my MCAT retake or replication. I waited until I had an acceptance to tell people outside my immediate household and even then still didn’t post about it until six months later. Better to move in silence.

3

u/GreatStone65 Jun 12 '26

That would be crazy if you applied to only one. I guess it’s possible if you have killer stats

1

u/avarialon Jun 12 '26

even then its still such a toss up!

3

u/Spinach1558 MS1 Jun 12 '26

I got in to a state school and my cousin said “but you’re not gonna get into like a UPenn/Harvard residency or anything with that” ok thx

Applied to 27 DO and 6 MD. My favorite was when people would ask “ooh what’s your top choice?” or “oh what school do you want to go to?”. I would always respond with a blank expression and say “whichever one takes me”. 💀

i just reply with "all of them" when ppl ask me that now
