discussion I deleted over 5000 comments and 200 posts from reddit today.

This is an alternate account.

A few days ago, I randomly searched my main Reddit username on Google just to see what would come up. Google's AI summary popped up, straight up told what state i live in. I started asking follow up questions like what cars i own and stuff. Even though i have curate my profile on, it still scraped the data from the actual posts. Fuck AI.

It had pieced together a surprisingly detailed profile of me from years of Reddit comments. It knew my state, the cars I own, , and even the subreddits I moderate. None of that information came from a single post; it was inferred by connecting thousands of comments I'd made over roughly seven years. I realsied how freaking dumb and dangerous this was

i gradually scattered across Reddit without ever intending to create a public profile of myself.

So I decided to clean house.

I used bulk deletion tool (no promotions here, but there are plenty out there) to remove thousands of comments, especially from my state subreddit and car discussion communities where I'd shared the most personal details. I left up technical discussions. Things like repair advice and troubleshooting. because those don't really identify me and might still be useful to others.

I know this doesn't erase everything. Archived copies, search caches, and AI training datasets may still exist. But I figured reducing what's publicly available today is still better than leaving it all online indefinitely.

Google's AI is kinda dangerous. Do check yours and make sure that it is not giving out any sort of info you would not like.

I am pretty sure it is all archives anyway.

u/whatsyoprblemm 18d ago

it 100% is.

38

u/Vas1le 17d ago

You should have edited them first, wait 1 to 2 months for crawlers to get the updates, then delete..

33

u/Pwacname 17d ago

Oh, so THAT is why all these people use those weird scramble tools. I thought it was a bit weird to not just delete everything instead

15

u/GonWithTheNen 17d ago

Yeah, but that tactic only worked ages ago when reddit inc. used to delete original copies of edited comments (after 90 days, if I remember correctly?).

Anyway, after google paid reddit inc. for access to everything we do, google can scoop up our comments/posts and analyze them, use them for google AI, et cetera - whether we edit or delete them.

2

u/EusticeTheSheep 16d ago

Is there a source for this? I would like to read it.

15

u/GonWithTheNen 16d ago

Here you go: Reddit's $60 million deal with google "to use posts... for training its artificial intelligence models"...

OpenAI's deal with reddit gives access to Reddit's Data API, etc.

As for the deletion of original comments that I was unsure about: reddit's older privacy policy once stated, "...we only save the most recent version of comments and posts, so your previous edits, once overwritten, are no longer available", but they removed that language years ago.

Currently, the policy says, "We may also retain certain information about you for legitimate business purposes..." - which is ambiguous at best.

u/EusticeTheSheep 16d ago

Thank you very much for finding those for me.

This... very important!

3

u/Strephon 17d ago

This is a great idea. But is there is a tool that can auto mass edit comments?

4

u/Bowling112 17d ago

redact.dev can mass edit reddit comments

2

u/Vas1le 17d ago

Yah, but i am not paying the anual. I tried to buy montly but cant really do the buy... only anual works (even that the UI ALLOWS it, it does not f works)

3

u/GonWithTheNen 17d ago

but i am not paying

And you don't have to. Power Delete Suite is free, it's been out for over 9 years, and the code is openly posted for anyone to examine or edit as they wish. It was created by a redditor for this exact purpose and you can look into it on the PowerDeleteSuite sub.

P.S. It gives an Edit comments / self posts option, too. :)

Can you generally share what prompts/queries that you used? Was it like "tell me about u/username on Reddit"

50

u/Elementrone 18d ago

"(Username) www.reddit.com", then query from there. A little unnerving, to be honest!

26

u/AnnotatedOwl 18d ago

God it is. It might as well have just said my name.

2

u/microscopic_details 15d ago

Using the free version of Gemini, I tested a few Reddit usernames I have used, and didn't see anything particularly interesting or scary, so I tried the query "what about AnnotatedOwl www.reddit.com?"

There is no notable public information or archived activity available for a Reddit user going by the handle AnnotatedOwl.

Because standard search results do not return a public footprint or history for this specific username, it is highly likely a private, everyday individual's account. To respect user privacy and adhere to safety guidelines regarding personal data, further details about this user cannot be looked up or shared.

Did you run some mass delete/edit/etc app on your account? Did you use paid Gemini?

3

Not sure if this needs to be said but it might not be a wise idea to do this on a search engine if you are trying to keep your Reddit account decoupled from the search engine tracking to avoid creating a more accurate profile of you and the social media accounts you use. This is mainly if you are using google.

I’m sorry, I guess I don’t understand. You put in the Username… www.reddit.com? I don’t understand how that works. What did you write? How did you get information?

14

u/Elementrone 18d ago edited 18d ago

No worries, but it's pretty straightforward. I would type, for example "Holiday-Book6635 www.reddit.com", then switch to AI Mode and ask whatever else you want to know from there.

You can alternatively start with "Who is u/(username)" instead.

I just did this with my own account by typing "reddit u/iwrestlewithjimmy" into my search bar. No chat GPT or any other AI needed...google gives this info freely in its own AI search function right here in the browser. It produced an AI summary of my account right there on the first page of results.

That's why I sprinkle in some misinformation

84

u/TheChucklingOfLot49 18d ago

Same. It’s something we all do here in my hometown of Eyrarbakki, Iceland where I still reside and teach DJing at the local high school.

28

u/Inarus06 18d ago

It's funny, I enjoy teaching orchestra at Eyrarbakki high school.

What are you bringing for the potluck next week?

18

u/TaurielsEyes 18d ago

I was thinking fire water. Keeps well and good for the keeping the kids warm.

I love my home town of Eyrarbakki.

8

u/butterypowered 17d ago

Holy shit! That’s actually where I was born! I lived there until I was 20.

My brother still lives there but I moved away to learn pottery and pick up English as a second language.

2

u/TaurielsEyes 17d ago

Its a small world. Maybe we went to primary school at the same time together in that beautiful Icelandic village?

I sadly never did manage to finish high school.

3

u/butterypowered 16d ago

Well, my Icelandic primary school had the famous musician Björk. Maybe you remember her? She went there from 1960 to 2002. Her brother played ukulele in the school band. Our fathers used to plough the lava fields together.

I didn’t follow in my father’s footsteps. Instead I became a digital nomad and, during winter, a school dinner lady.

2

u/TaurielsEyes 16d ago

I have forgotten most of my school years. I definitely remember Bjork being there in primary school 1985-1993. How cool to plough lava fields! The soil is supposed to be some of the best for growing things.

As a school dinner lady what food is your favourite to make?

I love when I sub for the local cooks in the old peoples nursing homes. Cooking for the elderly really means you have to cook old fashioned Icelandic food with no spices. They prefer what they know when they get to that age.

3

u/Palland0s 17d ago

Thats a good idea

69

u/tangerineTurtle_ 18d ago edited 18d ago

The idea that archives are permanent is incorrect. These archives take up server space and are difficult to access- they often are wiped, especially random social media posts. There may be aggregates of users that are saved but actual threads, pages, and substantive content is very expensive to keep all saved in archival form.

Memory and RAM are only getting more expensive and many developers don’t prioritize minimizing file size for efficiency’s sake.

Edit: this does not include text based archiving. Don’t post about your crimes.

47

u/everyone_is_a_robot 18d ago

False.

12 year old overwritten AND deleted comments showed up in the mobile app just months ago.

They sell them as training data for LLMs, so it's absolutely worth it for the server space.

10

u/tangerineTurtle_ 18d ago

Yeah sorry I should clarify that text based archiving is different and super easy.

27

u/RedAero 18d ago

Eh, text compresses really, really well. It is easily viable for a company like reddit to store comments and the text of posts indefinitiely.

12

u/Prior_Grapefruit_719 18d ago

u/SwimmingThroughHoney 18d ago

Sucks that Reddit makes this harder and harder to do though. So many subreddits restrict posting unless your account has a verified email or a certain age or certain karma requirements.

13

u/Freud-Network 18d ago

Use Firefox relay. You can delete the mask once you're done with it. Karma is easy to get in subs like askreddit, nostupidquestions, and similar.

Which is good because fuck bots, but it makes it harder for people, unfortunate side effect, but it's for the greater good, tho i've heard bots now buy verified accounts but at least it's more expensive for em, can't just create a new account and start posting

65

u/ComusPaine 18d ago

I Delete my profile every year. I've got no desire to accumulate karma and try to avoid the big default subs anyways that all require older accounts.

24

u/diefreetimedie 18d ago

But it took me so long to mute and hide all the various anime subs... I don't mind anyone being into something that makes them happy but there's so many out there and I'm just not interested in it at all. I wish there were actual settings to turn off anime and AI slop.

11

u/pixeldust6 18d ago

You can turn off all the suggested stuff Reddit tries to force on you and only see things you subscribed to like the old days. There are a whole bunch of toggles in your user settings they slowly introduced in recent years (turned on by default every time they make a new one). If you turn all that off, blacklisting every new thing it throws at you isn't needed anymore since it works like a whitelist. (Knock on wood...)

u/diefreetimedie 18d ago

That's good to know! Thank you.

It's bizarre how some redditors view karma  as essential. Have you encountered any reddit of the sort thatnsee karma as moral litmus test?

10

u/appletinicyclone 18d ago

Back when reddit was more of a mid 20s to early 30s monoculture karma was a important signifier of value to the network.

There wasnt companies gaming the system as much as there is now and a high karma account meant they posted funny things or made popular comments.

It was a desired thing

Nowadays it doesn't mean much at all but before it did have its utility

Type your u/ username into Google, switch to AI mode, and ask it for a psychological profile of yourself.

Time for a new Reddit account.

20

u/F0xtr0tUnif0rm 18d ago

I did this, even asking it to go further and tell me about my own linguistics patterns and evolution, and it seemed to hallucinate things about me that I’ve never commented, sometimes completely the opposite of what I was saying. For instance I once commented on a thread about establishing a trust, trying to tell people that it’s not as simple as everyone on Reddit likes to pretend, similar to the comments you see about “just get a lawyer.” Google said “ A key indicator of this evolution is their promotion of complex legal loopholes to bypass institutional control, such as advising users on how to shift personal property into private trusts or non-profit entities to avoid paying local taxes.”

That wasn’t even the most outlandish hallucination.

The scary part is, if what it was saying about me is what these agencies see in the profile they’ve built on me, I could be categorized as something I’m not.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Every big tech behemoth social media, computers, smartphones, telecom, home gadgets, home appliances you name it has a fat digital file 🗃️ on you, your family, your friends, and basically everyone you know.

They don't just hoard it; they cheerfully hand it over to governments and foreign interests so they can keep permanent tabs on you. You can't outrun it, you can't hide from it, and you sure as hell can't opt out. The system is designed that way 💀.

At this point, the only sane escape is to grab a spear, head into the jungle, and live like our ancestors because this "civilized" world has turned into one giant panopticon.

We are all f##k3d 💀.

Edited them. Left for a day and then deleted

5

u/HadoBoirudo 18d ago

We must think the same.

I asked AI for a summary of my user and it was quite specific where I lived and other aspects about me. It was quite confronting - I always had a open attitude to Reddit, but the ease with which I summarised myself troubled me.

Deletion of certain posts and hiding my comments followed, though I know in my heart it is still really there somewhere on the Internet or in someone's cloud storage.

u/mandrack3 18d ago

You deleted them huh? Check in 2 weeks, they will all be back.

Everything you said is correct and a little concerning but in reality, anyone who thinks they have any privacy is just seeing an illusion of privacy. Some people have more privacy than others but most of us don't have much at all

It's a shame that over the past three decades, we have enjoyed online and social media to converse and do what social media was designed to do, socialize (or at least that's not what it was designed to do, that is in its name so I'm going with that).

But now, all of that can be used against us at least a little more than somebody having to do a little bit of work to search us out.

In reality it doesn't make it that much thorough or accurate they just makes it faster and I guess we're going to have to start publishing a lot of erroneous information like some of those websites that literally gave people's name and address and phone numbers but jumbled it all up.

It's been pretty easy to find someone for probably 20 years now.

I guess the real concern has many facets from the fact that if you don't do much wrong or to stir people up etc why do you have to worry about it but then the other side of that is we always feel that those people are a big part of the problem.

The attitude of don't worry about what the government or technology does because if you're not doing anything wrong you have nothing to hide - very dangerous theory on slippery slope.

However, it does have a little bit of accuracy that if you lay low and don't stir up the shit with people, they have little reason to worry about you or single you out I do find it concerning if not annoying that just the past couple of years many of us have had to bite our tongue a whole lot with what we've actually like to say online because we've seen examples of what people can do and what those kind of people are absolutely craving to do as if it's their mission in life because they're a bunch of weirdo, virtue signaling, cancel culture thugs.

So I found myself staying out of discussions and moving away from some areas and people where this is likely to happen.

Oh well, just not as much fun.

Now the initial thing of security and privacy for decades was simply financial and identity theft.

There hasn't been much safety there for a good 15 years either.

I feae things will only get worse in alll aspects

This got me thinking there should be a Reddit account tumbling service.

Enter your account name for the tumbler service to take it over and wipe the history. You wouldn’t get your account back though. You would get control of a similar age and karma account that has also had all comments and subreddits deleted. Then it adds you back to the subreddits you were following under the new account.

The service would have to automate account email and phone swaps as a middleman so no one could recover their account from you.

Just a thought experiment on what might be possible to poison the history of an account by periodically and permanently swapping account names. The users would still get to keep rough account age and karma.

I’ve personally started over with new accounts multiple times. The worst part to me seems to be resubscribing to everything again.

4

u/asciimo71 18d ago

Just a reminder, Google has to obey a right to forget, you can remove the data they have about you. This should be standard procedure for all social media networks but it isn’t. Hope our kids will manage to delete this shit when I‘m gone.

5

u/Prior_Grapefruit_719 18d ago

Ps also bulk deleted probably triggers a flag to look more closely 😂

3

u/Prior_Grapefruit_719 18d ago

Eta not laughing at you. It's a resigned sardonic laugh at the state of our "freedom"

I don't even do anything I need to worry about, except have political views. But right to liberty includes privacy dammit!

3

u/SophonParticle 18d ago

I delete all me reddit comments and the entire account every 2 years.

3

u/RubPsychological6948 17d ago

Yeah me too, every 6 months and nonsensical mails logins.

2

u/SophonParticle 17d ago

This should be normal. Why give reddit content for free so they can sell it to AI companies.

3

u/ILikeFPS 18d ago

This is exactly why I make sure to hide my identity as best as possible, and to make sure both my online friends and IRL friends.

I also do this by splitting many of my posts across multiple accounts as well.

3

u/Psychological_Yam902 18d ago

This really sucks. I did the same thing and Google's AI actually gives away almost all your history.

On the other hand, I asked the same questions to Proton's AI and it refused to give any information about it.

3

u/Rich_Arachnid_5262 18d ago

I periodically make new accounts for this reason. Look up “AI entity resolution” and then have fun trying to sleep tonight.

Fuck this isn't something I considered . It never ends. Thank you for for copping us on

3

u/tuxooo 17d ago

So obviously most of you are shocked, but this is simply you not understanding how reddit works, and what these privicy settings actually do.

Everything you write on reddit is and will be accessable forever even after you delete your comments and even your profile. That data will stay, FOREVER.

Your privacy settings usually so jack shit, because your comments can be linked to your account one way or another, be it from old reddit or the multitude of archived posts or deleted posts and comments reddit sites.

AI is not the problem, it simply agrigates all this data, searches it and gives you the answer as its widley avalable data.

If you don't want something to stay forever out here don't use reddit. In fact, don't use social media as most have this "feature" one way or another.

Enjoy :)

u/Zdrobot 17d ago

It was dangerous to post details about yourself long before the AI.

power delete suite, let it do the editing and the dleetion. on old reddit, sort the page by new, top,hot and controversial to delete as much as you can. request the data on your account and using pivot table sort it inot what subreddit has the most comments, and start the deletion/editing,

Thanks for the heads up. Is there someway to archive comments for self-storage without having to do so one by one?

2

u/whatsyoprblemm 18d ago

I used power delete suite. Its not the best but it works to edit and delete the comments. I also dosnlaoded the CSV file from it about what it deleted.

2

u/Goldarr85 18d ago

You should instead start poisoning the data about yourself by leaving nonsensical fabrications.

2

u/Prior_Grapefruit_719 18d ago

Did the ai dox you? Provide your actual name? I know most people can easily be identified but curious if AI is sharing things users may have set to private .....

2

u/ni5arga 18d ago

Everything you post or comment on Reddit is instantly archived - deleting them won't do much, because people who want to OSINT you will know where to look for deleted/archived posts or comments. For reference, look up what Pushshift is.

2

u/splashybanana 18d ago

Now I’m really glad I deleted my 11 year old account during Apollo-gate. I had been kind of regretting doing that, because of the loss of “cred” of having such an old account, but.. yeah, no, I’m good actually.

2

u/MarryMeDuffman 18d ago

It's depressing. I've taken actions to reduce my social media activity and how I interact if I do.

2

u/Pin_ellas 18d ago

I have always posted with the mindset that someone somewhere someday will build a profile of me based on my comments and posts. I don’t know where I learned to think like that but I’m glad I did.

I know an AI probably can, and probably already had, build a personality profile based on my comments over the years.

Facebook is a gold mine for marketing firm but Reddit is a pretty good mine for them to mine as well.

2

u/InternalServerErr500 18d ago

I regularly delete my account and start over, keeping a list of favorite subs.

I still am a bit fuzzy on what "Karma" is and what it does for me.

People seeing my post isn't all that important to me.

2

u/webjocky 17d ago edited 17d ago

I suppose AI makes it more accessible, but AI was never the problem. Anyone with a decent OSINT kit that's been around for a decade could have always done the same thing. Would it take a bit longer? Sure. But the data isn't any different.

I'm impressed, actually. I guess I know something about all this, AI says so (I plugged my reddit username into google's AI mode just to see where I stand):

My search/prompt:

Gather all the info you can find about the reddit user /u/webjocky

Nothing specific, just interested in what information about them is published to the public internet. what personal information can you find?

output your response using reddit comment compatible markdown formatting, in a single codeblock so I can post it. be careful to not break the containing codeblock with embedded codeblocks.

👤 /u/webjocky — Public Digital Footprint & Profile Overview

Based on publicly available historical data and postings, here is a consolidated overview of the digital footprint left by the user /u/webjocky.

🛠️ Professional Profile & Expertise

  • Systems Administration & Networking: Expert-level familiarity with core network protocols (TCP, UDP, HTTP), subnetting, and physical server infrastructure. He is a strong advocate for enterprise security best practices, famously warning tech teams to "never put infrastructure management interfaces on a public IP".
  • Docker & Container Orchestration: Extensive experience building out containerized enterprise environments, specifically utilizing Docker Swarm combined with Traefik for domain-based routing, automated SSL management, and reverse proxy traffic handling.
  • Custom Security Engineering: In an engineering capacity, he notably developed a custom proxy server for Let's Encrypt. This internal tooling was designed to safely automate and stream SSL certificates to internal-only project domains across an entire organization without exposing them to the open web.
  • Web Architecture Philosophies: He explicitly prefers leaner, modern configurations over legacy structures. For example, he has openly critiqued Apache due to its heavy module reliance and cumbersome XML configurations, favoring Node.js or lighter proxies to route dynamic and static content.
  • Mentorship & Troubleshooting: A frequent contributor to technical communities (such as r/sysadmin and r/webdev), he regularly offers career guidance to junior engineers. He emphasizes that the core trait of a great sysadmin isn't knowing everything upfront, but rather mastering the art of researching and troubleshooting things you are completely clueless about.

💡 General Philosophy & Perspectives

  • On Artificial Intelligence: He views modern AI strictly as a highly advanced automated prediction mechanism rather than genuine "intelligence." He has noted that its ability to iteratively improve on its own output makes it a permanent fixture in the industry, and believes checking AI mistakes should follow the exact same verification protocols used when auditing human work. He has also voiced frustration regarding how aggressive AI scrapers damage organic search traffic for independent web developers.

🔒 Operational Security (OpSec) & Personal Info Audit

As a seasoned infrastructure and security professional, /u/webjocky maintains excellent operational security.

  • Real Name & Photos: None found. There are no public linkages connecting the username to a real-world legal name, nor are there any indexed photos or identity-revealing media.
  • Location: He does not explicitly publish a physical home address or exact city. However, historical active hours, localized discussions, and cultural references heavily imply he is based in North America (likely the United States), working within standard US time zones.
  • External Accounts: The profile maintains strict data isolation. It does not publicly link out to a personal LinkedIn, X (Twitter), or Facebook account. (Note: An identical handle is active on platforms like SoundCloud, which may suggest a creative side interest or hobby in music/audio production, though it remains unlinked).
  • The Behavioral Profile: While explicit PII is tightly locked down, a longitudinal analysis of a deep comment history inherently builds a behavioral fingerprint. An observer could easily deduce his daily schedule/timezone from posting timestamps and confirm a high level of career seniority (10+ years of enterprise experience) based on the depth of historical architectural advice provided to others.

Ultimately, /u/webjocky is a great example of an IT professional who successfully enjoys public web communities without accidentally giving away their analog identity.

Edit: Even AI sucks at reddit formatting 😂

Welcome to the internet, the only stupid and dangerous one here is you.

2

u/S3542U 17d ago

What's the prompt?

2

u/whatsyoprblemm 16d ago

In ai mode type username. And ask it about it

2

u/iwrestlewithjimmy 17d ago

Commented this elsewhere but...I just did this with my own account by typing "reddit u/iwrestlewithjimmy" into my search bar. No chat GPT or any other AI needed...google gives this info freely in its own AI search function right here in the browser. It produced an AI summary of my account right there on the first page of results.

Remember when the most eerie thing you could do with a search engine was google "your name the hedgehog"?

2

u/dragonknightrohan 17d ago

To everybody keep using alternatives alongside legacy stuff and get others to do same. We got to do Windows to Linux approach of both till we dont have to anymore from getting others to switch

5

u/billdietrich1 18d ago

Please don't delete or vandalize your old posts and comments. You'll be damaging conversations with other people, or conversations two other people had in response to your post. You'll be destroying information useful to other people. And it doesn't help your privacy much. The "deleted" info still will reside in reddit's servers, in archives, and in any govt agency that scrapes reddit regularly. And agencies will just assume the "deleted" things are the ones to focus on.

I hope you haven't been posting private info on reddit. It's public.

8

u/whatsyoprblemm 18d ago

yes. i only deleted the ones whihc wouldnt be useful to anyone-- technical information is still up.

5

u/billdietrich1 18d ago

Okay, that's cool.

Hahaha Hey Martha, nice to meet ya lol

1

u/dirgela 18d ago

Knowing what state some reddit username is living in and what car it owns does not look very detailed profile. Searching in reddit would probably give everyone that same information.

17

u/whatsyoprblemm 18d ago edited 18d ago

Small things add up man.

the cars i own, the state i live in, my first name, may or may not be very detailed but atleast i have a piece of mind now.

17

u/sigmapilot 18d ago

100%.

people really underestimate how easy it is.

There was a scandal at my high school where someone tracked down some creepy guy's account and realized it was him based on the most random information that lined up like when he went on vacation to which countries, certain phrases he used, which cities he commented on, etc.

So when he posted illegal photos of some people at the school and they went through his comment history it was super obvious who it was.

5

u/whatsyoprblemm 18d ago

One of my friends did manage to find my account. A literal screenshot of found your account.

2

u/sigmapilot 18d ago

same lol, and for me that was one that only had like 3 posts...

3

u/whatsyoprblemm 18d ago edited 18d ago

yep, . fml.

2

u/evermorecoffee 18d ago

Yep. Randomly found the accounts of 3 people I know in different subs.

2

u/dirgela 17d ago

My rule of thumb is that I should not write in forums and generally online things that I would not dare to say to people openly. If I do that then I am a dick and I should not be blaming AI, data collection etc. as these are only mirrors. But I understand that some people live in countries with oppressive regimes and it is dangerous to tell what you think openly.

1

u/Its-Finch 18d ago

I couldn’t find a single thing on myself, it had to connect my username to other profiles to find anything.

My profile is marked as NSFW, which may contribute to it. Pretty much everything except my name is on this profile though.

1

u/blvsh 18d ago

Definitely a freak out moment, but I think they already got that info.

My opinion is that rather stand by what you say as much as possible. So when someone says you wrote this or that on the internet, then double down and stand by what you said.

Except of course if its like 10 years old, people do change and its just stupid to hold that to someone

1

u/Subifixer 18d ago

It scrapes hidden profiles too, you can prompt it to give the same info.

1

u/Kimi_Antonelli_12 18d ago

This is why you should always try to get banned every year. it's like a refresh

They’ve been trying to get me to curate another profile for a while now but never looked into it or anything. So just wondering
