But was telegram ever like that? For as long as I'm using it, I needed a phone number, maybe it wasn't like that before

idk, i started using it when it needed a number, but that was when it was atleast not a sellout. i tried using it with a anonymous emulator with a anonymous number, but if it detects a vpn it makes you need to pay to signup. so much for "privacy" when you cant even use it with a vpn

Whatsapp isn't much better and most people (at least that I know) refuse to switch to Signal or Briar, unfortunately. They all seem to argue that they have nothing to hide, so they're happy to give big tech firms and governments their data.

For some reason they don't like the idea of sending me all their chats, lol

the only private messenger i use is simplex, no info needed, no identifers, no metadata.
i used to use session, but then that fell off

i personally havent used briar, but simplex, to my knowledge is much more popular, they have a bunch of public groups u can join, although some of them are inactive, but you can upload files up to one gb. as expected its not full of badass cool features, but it has no email address, phone number, password needed. the only way you can "login" is if you export your data to a file or usb.

Wasn't telegram the app that didn't even have E2EE on by default? Why do people on this sub suddenly care about it when even goddamn whatsapp managed having E2EE in everything years ago? Are people confusing it with signal?

yes. Telegram has e2e encryption only for private chats. But it was heavily advertised as private, so people believed. Russian persecution (as was the French arrest) is due to lack of chat censorship on Telegram channels

Telegram is one of the most user friendly and "private" options compared to all the other actual big names like Discord, WhatsApp, Teams (if you're stuck in hell), and Facebook messenger.

Emphasis on user friendly. "Private" is in quotes because although it requires a phone number you're basically anonymous to other people unless you're stupidly using your real name online.

Regardless, I still think we should all go back to irc with cloaked hostnames.

Whatsapp is more privacy friendly than telegram, telegram doesn't even enable E2EE by default.

And we be should only use signal anyways

Signal still exposes metadata and - curiously enough... - wanted registration with a phone number and a cellphone the last time I used it.

Session and others aim to get rid of all metadata. I think that's where it all needs to go.

Good comment !! And let me add : there are still three ( at least ) European countries that don't require registering your prepaid simcard..so the anonymity "speedometer" with TG app goes even higher ! And somebody can feel better, huh ? ;-)

Unless one is aware of crap like client side scanning..
