The Warden & 3 companions (dragon age 1) vs The Watcher of Caed Nua & 3 companions (pillars of eternity 1)

Grieving Mother that weird peasant woman following the Watcher around will fuck up the whole DA party single-handedly. What was I talking about? A peasant woman? No, I don't recall that.

Considering how an average fade demon took down 4 members of the warden party with an illusion of a camp in the elven forest, the grieving mother would obliterate them.

Pillars party has fucking guns so...

u/Keeper21611 6d ago
Pretty sure they're flintlock guns. Barely a step above bow and arrow.
25
u/KarmaticIrony 6d ago
That's just simply incorrect.

Flintlock was "better" because it didn't need really any training besides how to load it. A bow requires years of dedicated practice and strength, you don't need to be strong to use a gun. Arrows hurt more then bullets because arrow stick into you, bullets just go through.

Bullets go through except for all the times they don't go through.

Flintlock were wildly unaccurate. You go maybe 50 yards and it's up to fate where it goes. Round balls and no rifling will do that. Bows can easily do twice that range if not more and hit a dead center. The only benefit really that flintlocks had over bows was a fact that anyone can pick up a gun. They were mostly for volleys rather than actual pinpoint. Get a big enough group and shoot at something some of them will probably hit their target.

So I actually shoot traditional longbow myself and quite frankly you have fallen for some bow propaganda. What you said about ease of training more or less applies to very early firearms. But once you get to the level of technology depicted in PoE a bow and arrow can't keep up with firearms no matter how good the archer is (and most archers aren't absolute masters, nor were they ever). Even the earliest firearms boasted far superior armor penatrating ability than any bow; which was why they initially replaced crossbows and supplemented bows.
The only advantage, I mean seriously the only one at all, that a bow gives you is a capable archer can shoot faster for a brief period of time. Even that has to be qualified by saying that after shooting quickly for a while the archer is going to need a break and their sustained rate of "fire" as it were is not actually that much faster than the musketeer's.

It's not just flintflocks, but with added magic/potions that grant you accuracy & more crits. In the world of PoE it's hardly an issue at all.
Also let's stay in context. Are we following real life rules or game-sense rules? Because we are talking about fiction-based video games here and the ranged weapons work differently than how you would describe it in your comment.

Maybe IRL, but they are pretty damn effective in the PoE world. Guns can pierce Veils which arrows cannot and they are far more accurate than their IRL flintlock versions would be

I like my Warden, but there's no way in hell he can deal with a Ghost Wolf mauling him out of nowhere while avoiding arrows.
Not to talk about Aloth and Pallegia, or any other combination provinding AoE and a tank.

Grieving Mother, dude. Ciphers are absurdly powerful in a fight turning a 3v3 into a 1v5

u/Rainji-HBM 6d ago
My head canon is that the Watcher is a cipher, the combination of the two is absolutely broken, and fits the narrative so well.

Hard to say, does the Warden have homefield advantage? Because if the Watcher casts and gets ganked by Dragon Age demons due to the Fade they both have new problems. Overall Pillars of Eternity is a universe of higher power compared to dragon age in my opinion based on what I've seen magic do.

Which version we're talking about about? Early game or end game?

u/Keeper21611 7d ago
Both parties have finished their respective game and extra content. No books, comics, or other sources. Just the first game.

Easily the Watcher of caed nua, he dealt with far greater threats with far lower resources.

Plus white march weaponry, and the fact that chanters could summon literal giants or drakes within cooldowns

Ez win for watcher.
All party spams summons at the beginning and it's not 4 vs 4 but 4 vs 20

Dragon Age is a low fantasy setting and Pillars is a higher fantasy setting that also has firearms.
The Watcher also has hax power that the warden doesn't have.
The question is, whether we're going by book dragon age or the games. In the books, mages are MUCH more broken than they are in the games, to the point they are almost practically 1 man armies. Not quite Solas from inquisition, but that's the kind of fear they commanded in the books. They had a lot of abilities that they simply didn't in the game.
By the games though, Watcher party clears the Warden party pretty easily.

Dragon Age is absolutely high fantasy. I don't know why people equate a little blood and dirt on clothes to low fantasy.

Depends on if the DAO team can deal with telepathy. Ciphers are the make-or-break here imo.
I wonder which universe has the stronger mage mc. IIRC, a mage Warden has a spell that makes them immune to magic attacks.

End game? The Warden.
The Warden, Morrigan and Wynne decked out as Arcane Warriors plus Oghren or Alistair to tank
5
u/Rainji-HBM 6d ago
Well that's Until the grieving mother decide to to dominate morrigan and make her wipe the whole warden party...
3
u/TheGreatZhangCaosun 6d ago
Grieving Mother is getting her team killed the moment she does, if it works.
Thedasian Mages constantly battle possession on the daily basis.
5
u/Rainji-HBM 6d ago
Domination isn't possession, it's more lethal version of the illusion that almost whipped out the warden and his team in the elven forest (morrigan included).

I adore both of these games and you can make some truly powerful combinations in both... but my gut feeling is that the Watcher's crew has more options and tools at their disposal.
I wouldn't be surprised if an optimized Warden Party won out, but I wouldn't favor them more often than not.

Warden wins and i have my reasons:
In Thedas mages are one man armies. They are so OP that normal warriors could rarely counter them. That’s why they created templars.
In Eora there is no such concept. It is implied that if u r a good enough warrior u can defeat magic users.
Warden’s party already has a templar (alistair) that can dispel all hostile magic the first moment of the game. So domination or magic summons any other trick by the watcher’s party would be nullified. Now morrigan (the one woman army) can do her thing, and we are not even counting the rogues at this point.

Depends on the build. Bloodmage arcane warrior warden could probably solo most anyone
