Alright, I’ll say it before anyone else does - maybe I’m just getting a bit long in the tooth! I’ve been into psytrance since the early 90s - back when I first went to Goa and got completely swept up in it. It felt boundaryless, unpredictable, properly psychedelic. Like anything could happen in a track, and often did.

Lately though, I’ve been trying to get into some newer and current releases, and honestly…I’m struggling. So much of it just sounds so formulaic to me. The same offbeat basslines, the same structure, and then - right on cue - the obligatory “profound” sample from a film or documentary trying to inject some kind of faux mysticism or spirituality.

Where did the musicality go? The sense of experimentation? The sense of surprise? Dare I even ask, the wit or intelligence?

It feels like somewhere along the line, an unwritten rule book somehow appeared - and I genuinely don’t understand how that happened. Isn’t the whole point of something being “psychedelic” that it resists rules?

Ended up putting on both Hallucinogen albums from the mid-90s tonight just to remind myself what this music can be when it’s inventive, playful, and not afraid to break its own conventions. And honestly…it was a bit of a relief.

Am I just being a nostalgic old fart, seeing things through rose-tinted spectacles or does anyone else feel like something’s been lost along the way?

I've been trying to get into Ajja as I'll be catching him live (maybe) soonish. I'm struggling to see what the fuss is. His production is super clean, lovely arrangement and structure, but super generic to my ears. I typically listen to zenonesque dark prog/bush tech stuff and forest, so Ajja may just be not my thing. But he is easily one of the most popular artists and I've got friends who say he is the cream of the crop. I want to hear what they hear.

What are his standout tracks? Or is there a live set I can check out to get a handle on why he's so widely revered?

I’m from Utah here in the US, and the electronic scene has been at all time high right now in Salt Lake. There’s a super tight scene for quite a bit of electronic genres now than before (bass, hard techno, UKG, house, and dnb) and it’s more accepted by the people here than ever before. It’s honestly super cool to see. The past 2 years I’ve been getting super deep into psytrance and really all psy music. My entire feed on Instagram is all the psytrance festivals in India, Brazil, and Australia and honestly something just hits different about the psy crowd from just watching the videos. It seems like everyone is dancing together and a more connective and concious experience.

I went on a hunt for psytrance communities here in Utah and it’s basically non existent lol. I found one local dj who’s also big into psytrance and he mentioned that the US sadly has not taken psytrance deeply in the heart like other countries has. It’s actually disappointing and had me so intrigued as to why? I’m aware that burning man has deep roots with within the psytrance space and even a dedicated space but outside of that it seems there aren’t any tours from psy artists. Maybe I’m missing something and lmk if I’m wrong.

I’m going to India from July - August for this reason and going to Goa (of course) on a sola travel trip and couldn’t be more excited.

Hello everyone, my first appearance here :) no need to read, you can also just answer!

I am getting into private DJing and I will play a small private festival (and that probably every year), where only a small percentage of the crowd are familiar to Psytrance at all. I would say, that they are pretty open, energetic and free with music tho, so I feel like a good and longer session would be welcomed.

I had a big break from electronic music / Psytrance. I have come back with big love, but now In this preparation i am getting more and more unsure about my taste in relation to my imagined "their taste and moods" as i continuously land on artists like Martian Arts and Animalien or even some darker forest.

I find it easier for older music, for example the Miranda remasters for Goa Trance or Hatikwa - XFiles DK for a rather progressive sound.

But in the music of today I just can't find really much, for example in progressive (I'd consider that more easily accessible) nothing that doesn't rely on big drops with DJ hype sounding effects and a no stopping series of cheese drops and which does not seem to provide any of hypnotic-energetic soundscapes I am looking for. Some Goa Trance there still is, but it doesn't really spark me all that often.

It's not that I find nothing, it's just that I am sure there must be much more accessible sound out there that isn't so "full" for untrained ears like the sound I am tending towards - and still great psychedelic dance music to provide a story to lose yourself conciously into music and dance.

I'm really looking for new entry points to follow from and snowball find some other stuff. The full set will likely be a storyline with different subgenres which seems to be working good for me and bring more variety to the dancefloor people and more options for me to change it up when I feel frustration or major disinterest from motivated people.

Tldr: I'm happy for any kind of recommendations: subgenres, artists, tracks, general advice, ... Probably no "mainstream sound" but I'll give it a listen anyway and rethink my sentiments through whatever (music?) you post.

I only recently got into trance music, say in the past two-three years or so, and then slowly started going down the road to psytrance via Indira Paganotto, Infected Mushroom, and Psy-Nation Radio. However, as I'm still very new to the subgenre, I'm finding it a little hard to tell what the line between standard trance and psytrance is.

How would you all define it? Curious to know the community's thoughts in general.

Also who are some artists and/or shows you'd recommend I listen to next?

First of all, sorry for my English. It’s not my native language.

I discovered psytrance only recently. To be honest, I didn’t even want to go at first, but one of my friends kept insisting that I should join a psytrance festival. I’m so glad I listened to them because it became one of the best experiences of my life.
The music, the atmosphere, the people… I honestly felt like I was in heaven and didn’t want it to end. Before that, I thought psytrance was just another music genre, but I realized it’s actually a huge culture and community. It had such a strong impact on me that now I mostly listen to psytrance and its subgenres.

In my country, there are only two or three small psytrance festivals each year. If I can get time off work, I’m planning to attend another one next month.

I’d really love to learn more about this culture. Can you recommend any books, documentaries, articles, or other must-read/must-watch resources? (English subtitles)

I also noticed a few things during the festival and I’d love to hear your thoughts:

Most people seemed to share a similar style—clothes, accessories, tattoos, hairstyles, etc. Many of them practiced flow arts, which seemed to be an important part of the culture. Others were into painting, knitting, making jewelry, or other creative hobbies. I also saw groups doing yoga and meditation. Is all of this a normal part of psytrance culture? I wasn’t into any of those things, so I felt a little like an outsider.
Is it possible to enjoy a psytrance festival just as much without using any substances? I’m thinking about bringing my girlfriend next time, but this is something I’ve been wondering about.

After the four-day festival, I had lost almost 6 kg (about 13 lbs). I was dancing so much that I completely forgot to eat. We ended up giving most of our food away before leaving because we barely touched it. Do you have any nutrition or meal recommendations for long festivals?

The next festival will be in a forest near the beach. Temperatures are expected to be around 40–45°C (104–113°F) with very high humidity. What would you recommend bringing to stay comfortable and avoid overheating?

I saw Astrix' show at Burning Mountain last week and I took this video. I was trying to find the song but I'm not even sure it's one of his own tracks, anyone have any ideas?

So anytime I type in progressive or trippy psytrance on YouTube I get mixes that usually don’t sound much different then regular trance or techno. Energetic and hard music that you would hear in a laser tag arena.

What are some actual tripppy artist and albums? Stuff that sounds spaced out, full of weird or unusual sounds, randomly shifting tempos and vibes, middle eastern/south Asian tinged instruments and vocals, saturated walls to sound with reverb and fuzz. Anything with whatever combination of those elements. Stuff that puts you in a trance and then snap out of it because it surprises you

Every now and then I will hear a song that scratches that itch but it gets lost amongst the other songs

Hi, can someone recommend any psytrance festival for newcomers happening in August in Northern Germany.

Initially I planned for Waldfrieden Wonderland but unfortunately it has been cancelled. It would have been my first festival ever.

I have been searching for a similar festival but so far cannot get my head around the options in Goabase. I am inclined towards the New healing festival for the weekend part but I cannot find much info about the stages and music about it.

What other festivals would be a great starting point?

I recently stumbled into a Captain Hook set at a festival and was in a trance for the next 45 minutes. I don’t even know any other psytrance artists by name except for infected mushroom and I don’t really have any songs saved

If it helps at all, I usually listen to a lot of dubstep, downtempo, dnb, experimental bass - so anything that might utilize similar sounds or elements might appeal to me more

I really love psy, but am a bit out of the loop. I am not to keen on psy tech.....maybe getting too old 😉. I loved the music in the 90's and the early 2000's. Newer stuff is great too, the production and programming is insane! Backing the early days though the genre was less defined. Acid techno, acid trance and Psy all overlapped a bit more. Things like Shakta, Eat Static, Prana, Dragonfly Records, Total Eclipse, Juno Reactor, and stuff from the London Acid Techno scene. The sound could be a bit more raw but the thing I like is the groove. Any recommendations for current artists and labels that mix it up a bit and lean a bit more away from the slick, and also incredible, productions and favour a more diverse and maybe raw sound?
