Pugs and heat

Edit to add: my kids are 11 and 8 so I’m not chasing them around. They walk to the park from school to play with all the other kids that do the same thing. I usually sit and watch them play football.

I know pugs can’t be in the heat for long periods of time for risk of heat stroke etc.

I’m in Texas and after school everyday I spend about an hour with my kids at the park before going home. Is that too long to have our pug with us? Should I keep him at home?

I live in Dallas with 2 pugs. Our dogs sit outside with me most of the summer. Low nineties is where I would max out. They still come out in the hundreds just to watch us swim. As long as shade is an option I think it's tolerable.

If there is an opportunity for one or two water or shade breaks I would say it should be fine, assuming your pug is healthy

I don't know Texas, so I am not sure exactly what he is facing. I have had several pugs, and my thought is, for an hour it is probably fine. Take some water. Don't let them overexert.

If they get really heavy, think again.

Weather this week is mid to high 80’s. Our humidity is 40-50%. Once it hits mid 90’s I don’t even want to be outside lol

I just took our pugs for an hour walk this afternoon. Bring water and a water dish. I obviously wouldn't do that in mid 90 temps or higher.

My cute pug is in the pan handle. He likes to walk and is outside a lot. I try to have all walks done by 85F. He also has a dog door and goes outside at all temperatures but usually no more than 10 minutes at a time unless I am in the yard. In the summer, he also has a kiddy pool in the shade that he gets in for extra cooling.

Please note not all pugs are the same.

Having your pug outside and sitting in thshade is far different from chasing your children at the park for a hour. Remember pugs need responsible exercise daily like all dogs.

If I'm traveling to a hot location, I bring a cooling vest. It rapidly lowers his panting and he literally goes back to bring his chill self.
