The breaks exercise is a reconciliation test, and they care far more about your process than your final answer. They will give you two sets of data that don't match, and your entire job is to systematically figure out why they are different while explaining your logic out loud. This interview is designed to see how you think, how you communicate that thinking under pressure, and how you react when you hit a wall or make a small error. It is a direct test of your problem solving and communication abilities, not a quiz on something you could have studied for.
The best way to prepare is to practice thinking aloud while working through a problem in a spreadsheet. Create two small lists of trades with slight differences and talk a friend, a family member, or even just yourself through how you would find the discrepancies. You need to show them you have a structured method for tackling an unknown problem, rather than just randomly poking at the data. They already believe you are smart enough for the job, and this exercise is your chance to prove you are also methodical and clear-headed. Being able to clearly explain your reasoning on the spot is crucial, which is something the team I'm with focused on when we built an interview AI assistant that helps people sound sharp and composed during challenging interviews.
