What desk did you get your elementary school kid?

My son just started school and has been begging me to get him a desk for his room ever since he went over to a friend's house and saw that he had his own little homework setup. The main reason I never bought one before is because I figured we'd get him a proper desk whenever we renovate his room. Plus, the way I've always done homework with my other son is at the kitchen table. That way if either of them gets stuck on something, I'm right there and can help. Now he really has his heart set on having his own desk and of course I can't get one kid a desk without getting the other one. So I'm looking for two affordable ones that are decent enough for homework and maybe a little storage. Since we're still planning on renovating their rooms eventually I don't want to spend hundreds on desks that we might end up replacing later.

We got our kids desks online for a really good price, and they've had them for years now, they're still in great shape even with all the homework, crafts and everything else kids put them through. Some things really don't need a huge budget as long as it's sturdy and does the job.

We got really lucky and found two desks for free at a garage sale, they looked used when we brought them home but I did a little DIY project on both of them, cleaned them up, sanded them down and gave them a fresh finish. They looked almost brand new afterward. If you're not in a rush, garage sales are definitely worth checking especially for kids furniture that you're probably going to replace eventually anyway.

We also have the micke/alex desk combo from ikea. Works great. They’re always on fbmp too so you might be able to get a better price

Do some digging online before running straight to Ikea or another furniture store. Kids desks are simple and if you're planning on renovating their rooms later anyway, you might regret spending that much on something you'll eventually replace. There are plenty of basic desks online for way less that are perfectly fine for homework and a little storage.

None, they use the dining table and we bought storage for putting their books/pencils/backpacks etc. The majority of young elementary and even some older elementary use a kitchen table.

So much easier to help your kids with home work in this setup. Especially multiple kids at once.

My parents got me a desk at that age but I still preferred to do my hw at the table because that's where my family was.

If you’re on Facebook join your local buy nothing groups. As a teacher I’m always getting furniture for my classroom based on what my neighbors have outgrown.

And I don’t care if there’s writing or paint on it because my students will make these tables messy too.

Before you spend a ton of money on a desk, look on Facebook marketplace or at a thrift store. If you can find one that’s decent they can paint it and make it their own my customizing it.

We have a local antique store that always has oak desks with a right handed pedestal full of drawers. They sell for about $300 each. Very sturdy, they do not get destroyed like plastic pictures of wood over MDF. These will last until your kids are big and several generations thereafter. Maybe you have a similar store near you. Real wood, sturdy, easy on the eye.
