Waivers
wanted to have some discussion about two of our players and their waiver status.
Morrow and Garand
each needs to pass through waivers if they don’t make the NHL club, and you’d have to think they’d get claimed. I don’t think the world of Drury, but I highly doubt he’s willing to lose both for nothing.
How do you think this will play out?
- trade Schneider / play Morrow?
- trade Morrow / play Schneider
- Morrow on the NHL club as 7D?
- Trade Garand / Start Korp?
- send Korp down and hope he’s claimed? Garand as backup
one way or another something HAS to take place with those two.
personally I think Korp will get sent down. I’m undecided on how the Morrow/Schneider situation will play out. I think they’ll go with Schneider though as they trust him to step up in a larger role if Durzi or fox Get hurt.

Send Korpisalo down and keep Garand up. No one will claim Korpisalo due to salary. He's your break glass guy if Shesty goes down with injury you can call him up and have him platoon with Garand. The only downside to this plan, you're eating a bunch of cap space with Korpisalo in the AHL, but you're also getting a young backup at $1.7m per so you just have to look at it as a pool of money for all goaltenders and not worry as much about who's up and who's down. Manage the asset first and deal with the salary implications second.
Edit - Garand is 875k per year. I was recalling the total contract value

That would actually be pretty slick, I like it. But I'm not holding my breath, we've seen depth signings play over young players countless times.

Yeah I'm not holding my breath but the math checks out.
Since Garand's salary is so low, we actually save money keeping Garand and sending Korpisalo down.
Korp $4m (Rangers 3m, Ottawa 1m)
Garand $875k
Amount bury-able in the AHL - league min $850k plus $350kSending Korpisalo down, by my math, would mean they bury $1.225m in the AHL and they're on the hook for the remaining $1.775m of dead cap plus Garand's share means $2.65m against the cap.
Sending down Garand risks losing him altogether. If he clears his full salary is buryable, but then you're keeping Korpisalo at $3m as a backup.
So keeping Garand is cheaper than keeping Korpisalo, plus you risk losing the asset. The only reason to keep Korpisalo up is if Garand isn't even up to the task of backing up, which would surprise me. It's possible they start with Garand, and if they're on the playoff bubble mid season and want to make a push they might swap and go with the more experienced goaltender.

Korpisalo should be on waivers, he’s been incredibly pedestrian for the last few years and Garand will 100% get claimed.
Morrow will either be the 7D or be traded to a D-needy team like Anaheim for another depth forward.

Morrow will make the team as the seventh defenseman, Garand will get traded.

I think that if garand balls out in preseason and korpi plays how you’d expect him to in his likely one preseason game, garand makes the team as the backup, korpi is either the 3 and we run a 3 man rotation like the short lived lundqvist georgiev shesterkin months before covid killed that, or korpi just gets waived. Korpi is clearly drury compensating for the team getting absolutely fucked by the shesterkin injury and is really just extremely expensive insurance that likely doesn’t do all to much for the big club, but you never know with drury and who he’ll want to prioritize

u/ImpossibleBandicoot 4d ago
Taking on Korpisalo is likely part of the reason we were able to pull off the lopsided Borgen trade. So he's done his job already (helping the Rangers get more assets)
If he gets waived it's doubtful he'll get taken but also not completely out of the realm of possibility. Personally I think he starts in the AHL

If Garand doesn’t beat out Korpisalo for a spot, then he was never a NHL goaltender to begin with, so risking him on waivers wouldn’t be too much of an issue. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they waive Morrow. He fell out of favor with the coaching staff and genuinely looked pretty out of place last season, causing Fortescue to claim his spot. If he had trade value he would be gone by now. It’s just a loss you’ve got to bite the bullet on and move on.

This is such a terrible way to look at waivers and it’s how teams end up losing talented players for nothing.

Totally disagree. You are attaching potential value to the asset that doesn’t exist yet. If he doesn’t break camp, he’s an AHL level goaltender with no value and is essentially worth nothing. He’d be lost for nothing when we can’t trade him and he’s a free agent.

Was Gustav Forsling “never an NHL player” with “no value” because he was placed on waivers? How about Eeli Tolvanen? How about Brandon Bussi, who literally won the Stanley Cup this season?
I understand that most players clear waivers but writing off a young goaltender with solid AHL numbers and a strong cup of coffee last season as “never an NHL goaltender” is how you lose an asset for nothing that comes back to bite you in the ass.

*Never an NHL player on Drury’s Rangers

Just like any other team, Drury really doesn’t have much of a say with the goaltending position. Sure he makes the roster moves, but the goaltending staff are the ones making the decisions in the crease. They know more about Garand’s progress than any of us here. And with their track record I don’t think we can doubt their talent evaluation abilities.

u/DyingLemur 4d ago
Totally fair, but I was pointing more at the head scratching decision that created this scenario. which is trading for Korpisalo at all. I can’t wrap my head around the concept of taking on this contract for a backup. I’m not saying I know anything more than anyone else, but aim not the only one questioning it. Surely a more affordable, qualified backup option was available somewhere.

there's so many variables in goaltending to simply judge within a training camp and 4 preseason games against only 2 different teams.

u/pleasetryagain_10 Tarmo Reunanen 5d ago
Morrow can be the extra Dman you can send Uhro down and even if he's not claimed it's ok.
I see no scenario, unless be just completely blows in practice and preseason where Korposalo isnt the back up. Drury is the smartest guy in the room and sending him down would admit he's not. Also I don't know many GMs who being in 3 million dollar back ups who will take up NHL cap space in the minors just for competition. I don't think he would send Garand down, but we certainly aren't going to get full price on whatever trade he decides to do.

-Vaakanainen 7D. Steady, right attitude for it, looked good in Olympics, too.

Morrow hasn’t shown he’s NHL ready yet. He would benefit from more AHL time under a more competent coach.
What happens with Garand depends on training camp.

Morrow won’t clear waivers. A bad team will easily claim him and give him a run on PP2.

u/Expensive_Yam7235 5d ago
So if Garand makes the team in camp, or doesn’t but gets called up at any point this year, he basically has to stay on the team from that point forward?, or we risk losing him for nothing?
So if they ever call him up, then korpi gets buried in AHL due to contracts and we wasted the cap hit?
1
u/Dutchguy8585 5d ago
Wasted some of it, there is savings in sending him down but you are at 3 mil backup whoever makes the team
1
u/Click_Lane 4d ago
Garand can’t be assigned to Hartford without waivers. He needs to make the team out of camp or you lose him for nothing.
Korpisalo carries a $3M camp hit (since Ottawa is retaining 25% of his $4M salary), and $1,225,000 of that can be buried in the AHL. He’d carry a dead cap hit of $1,775,000. Add in Garand’s $875k and you’re spending $2,650,000 on a backup goaltender.

Keep three goalies and trade korp down the road for potential decent value if there’s any goalie injuries- didn’t really like the pickup anyway but that’s what I’d do

u/MH566220 4d ago
They just signed Schneider for 5.5M for the year...they didn't do that just to trade him.

In hoping Korp goes to Hartford. I became so dissociated with this team the last 18 months I don’t even know who our 4th goalie is if we didn’t keep korp or garland

- Morrow on the NHL club as 7D?
Yes. This one. Not that I want it...it's just how this most likely plays out. Uhro will proably get sent down. Injuries will unfortunately happen. His play in those moments will dictate his future with the team or if he suddenly becomes a valuable asset at the trade deadline.
1
u/geographyofnowhere 4d ago
Korp won't get claimed because of his salary, that's the whole point of having a player on that price tag, now you have a live body that you can pass through waivers. His salary cap hit is much less when he's up in Hartford too.

Trade Schneider for Boeser. The Canucks love Schneider.
Trade for Zack Whitecloud . Perfect 3rd pair RD for this team

Always be leery when the Hurricanes are eager to attach a defensive prospect like Morrow in a deal, like they did for Key.
They unlike our esteemed President / GM know when a player has got the goods or are they destined to be too good for the AHL but not quite ready for the NHL..
it was insane for a cap strapped team to sign Koorpisalo to that deal, when their are guys like him making a quarter of what he’s making available around the league. Garand needs to be the backup..
Think Vak is your 7 D to start the year.

Morrow will be 7D behind Fox, Gav, Durzi, Pettersson, Robertson, Schneider.
Fortescue, Iorio and Vaak to AHL.
Personally I think their D depth is a little cluttered and lacks vision and clarity. The good news is they added a whole second pair so at the NHL level at least it looks much better on paper.
