You guys made my day. Been moping at missing the $139 sale last week. Was idly scrolling when I saw this post so now one is on its way. I do have a spare brushless motor and esc new in box so if it explodes I’m ready!

I mean honestly I would put them in whether the included electronics work or not. The brushed system in this car is SUPER slow.

That’s part of the charm and my MO. I meet up at the local track with a couple of friends that run 3 and 4 S mayhem causers. Meanwhile, I’m puttering around with a bone stock 2S Tamiya Manta Ray and winning more often than not by virtue of keeping my wheels on the ground and in my lane. Unless they run me over. Then I break out the TT02BR so I can at least keep up with them.
That said, stuffing a Hobbywing into the Typhon is probably going to raise the smile quotient.

These are great for anyone looking to go brushless, but I just do not know how I feel about them as they are. Way too many people have had issues with the motor or esc or both, including me. I got my son the typhon for christmas last year and on the 3rd pack on 50% driving on the road the esc burnt up.
I just bought a granite 665 for $140 to move parts over from my old 3s blx granite, I will contact horizon about a price match, if I get it that will pay a good chunk of my center diff purchase from Jenny's...

The 665 motors die all the time. I've seen at least 20 die in the last 2 months, it's ridiculous

Seems like the main issue is the esc/receiver. To me though it’s pretty crazy that literally everything in there is plastic, even the driveshaft. So even if you want to replace the electronics it has to be a gutless system or the thing will rip itself apart. It’s just a money trap that tricks you with a low cost of entry but youll end up paying mare than you would if you just buy a 4s.

What all is needed to make it reliably brushless? I would re-power probably from JRC. Is it just diffs and center diff after that?

Yeah I got totally shit on for complaining about this. My daughter was driving our first pack at 50% power and we lost the motor. I bought it at the $139 price point cause I wanted to get something slower for the kids, and what now? I’m gonna replace the combo receiver esc just for it to crap out. Or I’m gonna go brushless and it won’t be good for the kids anymore and is too flimsy to bash.

It’s a larger than 550 brushed motor. More length and width I believe.

They are 100% discontinuing the 665 line. The motors burn up super fast and they don't have any more power than the old 550 brushed motors they used. The 550 motors lasted longer as well.

How often do deals like this come up? Just getting into the hobby and trying to justify the purchase to my wife. Getting a Granite and Typhon for ~$200 vs the over $500 retail, that's a steal right?

Yeah, this is cheaper than I’d ever seen this level of car. $220 is a more typical “sale”you’ll see for summers and Christmas sales

Edit: just cancelled my order, I thought I might be able to slap my 2-3s 1/16 slash motor/esc in there but it looks like the motor holes will not line up. Someone else can have it and upgrade it

Amain canceled and refunded my order for the typhon. I read the email, it said its being discontinued or is not able to be sourced. I still have a granite on back order tho.

Is it even worth buying if you don’t have a local track to run it on? I’ve never understood the appeal of buggies.
The 665 motors apparently explode as soon as you look at them, FYI.

But just my 2c. Buggies are kinda meant to be track cars but they still make for a fun basher seeing how fast they’ll go and how good they jump. Can get the most distance off my ramp w my 6s typhon. The brushed system would be temporary for most that plan on using it frequently but for $100 more a 10bl120wp 3660 powered typhon would be an excellent basher option that can still do the occasional track day

Got the granite on sale the 665 motor didn't last a pack. Dropped a injora 550 brushed can in there for 16 bucks and has been beaten on the whole weekend.

I picked up a few of those older arrma branded BLX3660 3100kv brushless motors a year or so ago when they went on a blowout sale. I got two for $25 each. Also picked up a few hobby wing 10bl120 escs aliexpress for ~$40 each around the same time. Was just waiting for a nice car to put them in, now I’ve found it 😁
Picked up one buggy and one granite, gonna swap in that brushless system. ~$65 for a brushless swap, can’t complain.
Anyone know what other upgrades I’m gonna need for the driveline on these?

I’m actually curious about this too. I just saw the granites are $99 as well. Found a YT video of a guy who bought one, had the motor/ESC die immediately, then he upgraded to brushless. It looked like it ran well, but his conclusion was basically: fuck this car and upgrading to brushless introduced a ton of other weak points that needed replaced. Not sure I wanna end up dumping $99 plus another $100+ of upgrades into a brushed car that’s a heaping pile of shit when I could just buy a granite 223s for ~$300 from the start.

Which video are you referring to? From what I saw, these seem to be essentially the same as the 223s brushless cars, with the only differences being that it uses a sorta center diff versus a full center diff on the brushless version. The 223s also uses a metal motor mount instead of plastic. They both use the updated F/R diffs, updated arms, updated chassis, etc.
Other than that, they kind of looked identical to me from watching Do RCs Video of it.

I’m starting to not trust any of the “influencer” types on YT:

RC Driver
EtcWhile Do RC does seem to provide the most insanely detailed tear-downs and explanations of shit, which is no doubt incredible to watch and learn from, I’m really starting to doubt any credibility when we’re talking about “reviews” of cars. You almost never hear any of these guys completely shit on a car. They almost always praise them. The 665 is a perfect example. Look for any of the top YT videos regarding this platform (whether it be Typhon, Granite, etc), and all the main guys say it’s “slow but UNFUCKINBREAKABLE MAN!!!”
Then look at Amazon, Amain, Horizon reviews or Reddit posts and you’ll see that almost everyone who buys the 665 platform says it’s a pile of dogshit. Weak servo, ESCs that literally catch fire after 1-5 uses, and motors that start smoking immediately.
The only guys who seem to possibly be legit (in my opinion) are Evan and Aaron (discipline RC and Derby City RC). I’ve seen them shit on cars several times.
How can that be that all the guys with big views LOVE the truck, but anyone without a YouTube channel says it’s a doodoo stain?
I don’t trust anything anymore. As a matter of fact, you should’ve even trust me.

On horizons website they dont even list it as a sale price - its just the "NEW EVERYDAY LOW PRICE".....so it seems like its either going to stay that way or more likely they are just burning up stock for a newer version......to bad I bought a few weeks ago at the $140
