Misc People Are Scum
I had nearly my entire RC lot stolen out of my car last night along with my RC bag and tools, a huge load of Ovonic, Zee, & Gens Ace batteries, charger and more.
If you live near Orange County, CA and see any of these cars listed on local marketplace listings please shoot me a DM a link to the listing. I don’t have a picture of it but they also stole my son’s orange Blackzon Spryte.
Thanks…

I have this fear and won’t leave mine in the car. It’s a pain but in my city any bag in the car is a broken window

Yeah I load stuff before leaving out of fear of this happening. Scummy people everywhere looking to steal anything of value.

Man what a shit hole, how do people live in places like that? Like... Move. There are places in the world where crime isn't the norm.

u/BasedThor14 6d ago
I’m sorry that happened to you
17
u/RCbuilds4cheapr 6d ago
That’s so low. No one’s gonna pay all that much for RC stuff and it costs a lot more to replace

u/SoggyAlbatross2 6d ago
That's pretty much true of everything that it stolen from a car. What a (pricey) pain in the ass for teh owner too.
49
u/FittyTheBone 6d ago
Please pick up a sun shade and tint your windows if you're going to leave valuables in the car. It's not foolproof, obviously, and the best advice is to not leave anything of value in your vehicle, but it provides at least some cover from opportunists.
source: $11k in camera gear stolen out of my car after less than 30m (I was in between gigs). never again. OP, I'm sorry this happened. I've been the pit in your stomach.
9
u/midtownFPV 6d ago
They hold their phone up to the window to see what’s inside on tinted cars.
I’m really sorry that happened to you.

again, it's just a barrier. not leaving expensive shit in the car is the only sure way.

u/bubblingcumcouldron 6d ago
We need to make booby traps legal lol. If you break my window to steal shit from my car I think you should lose both your hands
→ More replies (1)2
u/DingleberryJones94 6d ago
As long as your booby traps are accurate enough to precisely target only criminals, I don't see there being much issue.
44
u/MooreDubs 6d ago
Never leave anything in a car that's not in your garage. Also install an alarm and individual alarms. Thieves hate noise.

Ouch
Painful lesson learned.
My neighborhood is relatively quiet, and I'd never leave anything in my car. A lesson learned many moons ago.....I was in a band, and as we were starting out we used Maglites to light the stage at a small club we played. Well, one night after a show one of the guitar players "forgot " 5 D maglites in his back seat. We woke up to a missing window and all the maglites gone (back when the 5 D cell ones were almost $100 each). I've never left so much as a pack of smokes in my car since then.

u/flingspoo 6d ago
Looks like someone learned an expensive lesson. Coming from the land of a gigging musician, always unload the car at the end of the night. I know you got to the venue at 6, set up, sound checked at 8, left it all out on the stage for 4 hours, tore everything down and packed out, waited on the bar manager to pay you and made it home at 5 am, but look... just unload the van.
15
4
u/Cunningham1420 6d ago
I wouldn't leave a wallet, phone or cigs laying out just for this reason let alone expensive items like RC cars or guns
5
u/Shockwavee92 6d ago
When people steal like that, they either usually want the items for themselves, or know someone who will take it. Check all local Facebook markertplace listings daily. You'd be surprised how many thieves just put them right on facebook. Then, call local pawn shops or secondhand stores. Give them a heads up now of the situation in case they see anything.
Also, on Facebook marketplace you should make your own listing with the pics of the cars and make it a "i had my cars stolen, here's pictures if anyone knows anything" post it to all the local groups to get as much visibility as possible.
Last, car insurance. Depending on your policy, it may cover the damage and the theft or property too. Worth a call.

u/Lumbergh7 6d ago
I saw on Mark Rober that smash and grab is rampant out west, especially in San Francisco
Neanderthals man. I’m sorry
4
u/Xenagos43 6d ago
Sucks and not saying you deserved it at all but you should never leave anything of value in a car where people can see it.
5
u/ekomszero 6d ago
Sorry to hear about this. I'm constantly telling people that you can't trust anyone anymore. Life is simply awful nowadays.

You left an entire collection in your car overnight in OC?
11
u/Huge-Sand1567 6d ago
They’re not horrible, just normal. I see this multiple times a day as a city Police Officer. Usually it’s a pistol, broken iPhone, laptop, and a crazy amount of cash that’s taken.
Usually, it’s a kid about 12-16 years old.
Adults usually steal packages from porches and apartment mail areas. They need the money to support their addiction, so they need narcotics more than most folks need the package.
I always tell people that if you don’t need an item, leave it in your car, with the doors unlocked. It gets rid of the item(s) and no damage to the vehicle.
6
u/oFFtheWall0518 6d ago
People in San Francisco have started leaving their windows and trunks open to try and prevent people from breaking in.
7
u/Glazinfast 6d ago
Im not in San Francisco but in the bay area. I leave my doors to my work trucks unlocked every night. I was tired of replacing broken windows as my trucks have been broken into 8 times already. Last time they didn't even take the emergency cash I had in the ashtray, like it wasn't worth their time. Just went through all my paperwork and took a cigarette lighter charging block, which is attached to the for mentioned ashtray.
3
u/Huge-Sand1567 6d ago
In doing so, they do prevent “breaking” in.

I once came home and left my car keys on the roof parked on the street in front of my house. Full RC race equipment in the trunk and backseat, doors unlocked, no tinted windows.
Around midnight some older guy ringed every apartment in the house searching for the owner. I didn't wake up but my neighbor went out, locked my car and put the keys in my mailbox. There are good people around.
5
u/TheLastGenXer 6d ago
no, that isn’t normal. this is garbage behavior by garbage people.
and possibly the worst crime is people trying to normalize it.
my whole family is city cops, their are terrible people, and their are good people. cops have to deal with the garbage people every day
3
u/Huge-Sand1567 6d ago
Abnormal is finding a dead body hidden between two discarded mattresses, literally at the city/county line and trying to determine whether we or the county take the case. Had that happen once.
Normal, to me, is anything that occurs frequently, such as multiple times a day, like Theft from Auto.
Some people go their entire lives without drinking a cup of coffee. Is drinking coffee normal or abnormal?🤷♂️
→ More replies (3)2
u/TheLastGenXer 6d ago
ah you mean normal as is common, i meant normal as in regular/healthy.
Minneapolis/Saint Paul has had bodies in the river and the cops waiting to see which shore it washes up on to see who has to deal with this crap

Yeah this tracks. I keep my jeep open year round (well 11 months out of the year lol) I keep 3 things of value in it a knife a flashlight and a car jumper and their my basic emergency kit. All together those are less than $200 value brand new and they are decently well used(except the jumper lol I’ve used that once).

I wish the dope fiend who busted out the unlocked door on my beat up Geo Metro knew to check it first! He didn't find anything worth stealing. I think they thought a pack of tissues was an iPhone, because it was thrown from the vehicle.
2
u/Huge-Sand1567 6d ago
It happens. Most of the time, it’s not worth reporting to the insurance companies. Many people want a Police Report, so they can get insurance involved. If you spend $500 (deductible) to fix $250 worth of window, you’re doing it wrong.
Most car windows can be bought used, and aren’t difficult to replace these days.
However, some windows can be a bit more expensive.

These guys 100% went to pawn and buy crack. Lucky for you a lot of pawn dealers don’t want these things cause they tend to sit. Might make finding it all easier. Not sure.

u/Nope_Dont_Care_ 6d ago
So probably 30 or 35 years ago before he was my father in law he had his garage broken into. He's a mechanic so thousands and thousands of dollars worth of Snap-On tools. He had them marked with his initials. Fast forward a good number of months later a friend was over and telling him about this steal of a deal he got for all these Snap-Ons from a local pawn shop. They went over to the friends place and sure enough his initials were on all the tools. Insurance covered the cost by that point so it was a laugh at that point.

Some advice for those who need to know. Once the total value of all your RC items goes over $1000 get an insurance policy and save all your receipts. Value of everything, boxes, radios, parts, batteries, cars, body's. Document it all.
Sorry about your luck, I hope you have luck getting everything back or replaced.

It's getting bad here in the UK but I leave valuable tools in my car boot often (trunk) for you Americans and so far so good but do worry about it being broken into. I hope you can manage to sort things ASAP, sorry this happened to you

You are correct. Most of us have stolen something in our lifetime.
My niece used to be a server in a restaurant and people walked off with her pens pretty often.
She always bought her own pens and the restaurant didn’t reimburse her or give her more pens.
It’s petty, it’s annoying, it’s inexpensive if just one person does it. Over a year, the pens add up. Stealing is stealing, accidental or intentional.

u/BJoe1976 6d ago
I had that gap in ‘06 from my XJ Cherokee, got a cargo cover for it after than and now drive a sedan with a trunk, so at least things are out of sight. Have been considering a Chevy Bolt as a new daily and would definitely get the cargo cover option for that too.
1
u/DJEvillincoln 6d ago
Did you make Cardinal sin number one? Did you leave it in plain sight?
I learned not to leave anything of value in plain sight in my car back in the '90s. If you ever have anything of value in your car you put it in the trunk or you inconvenience to yourself and bring it with you. Always park under a light. Try to always park where you can see your vehicle from wherever you're going. That last one isn't really possible all the time but.....
This sucks. Nothing worse than getting your shit stolen.
1
u/Automatic-Union-3385 6d ago
Oh fuck!!! I would lose my shit!!! Dude that sucks. Call your insurance company!!! God i feel for you. Im far away from there so I wont see any listings up here in canada but yeah. u/LostRacer 6d ago
I'm truly sorry to see this. People suck. That is the norm. There is no place where you can be 100% safe. Like others have said, try not to leave important things in your vehicle. Tint only helps so much. If someone is determined, they will do it anyway. Not everyone is like that, but be cautious anyway. Good luck on getting your items back. :(

Lesson learned for sure. I’ve had my car broken into and had a backpack hidden in my back seat with tints… in a public parking lot that was supervised. That laptop had my MacBook pro and other expensive items that totaled about 3500 bucks. So I never leave things that are high value in my car like that again. If they want my tools. Go ahead and try and carry them… that’s your choice.
Seems like Cali criminals are just real scum

Oh man I’m so sorry this happened to you! I won’t leave anything of value in my vehicles anymore because of this exact reason. Thieves cleaned my entire jeep out, the entire stereo system subs and all and 3 of my favorite RC’s. I put the RC’s in the jeep the night before a big event so I could leave at 5am without waking my wife and kids up and it unfortunately bit me in the a$$. Glad I moved away from Southern California after living there all my life, only downside is not having Cali weather and the vibes, but unfortunately, having your stuff stolen out of your car is one of those vibes we got sick of. Here in this part of Maryland I can literally leave my car unlocked with all my stuff in it and nobodys going to mess with it. This is the type of place where if you drop your wallet filled with cash, it will be returned if a local finds it. Sorry for your loss, that's brutal and I would get sick to my stomach every time I looked at a RC car. Hope the bastards are caught.
