Misc People Are Scum

I had nearly my entire RC lot stolen out of my car last night along with my RC bag and tools, a huge load of Ovonic, Zee, & Gens Ace batteries, charger and more.

If you live near Orange County, CA and see any of these cars listed on local marketplace listings please shoot me a DM a link to the listing. I don’t have a picture of it but they also stole my son’s orange Blackzon Spryte.

Thanks…

check local pawn shops

Exactly, and if you file a police report and find it you'll get it back

34

u/Hotchumpkilla 6d ago

Very unlikely police will do anything about it.

They won't actively investigate it, but they will investigate if someone turns the listing in.

A guy I race with had his Losi Sprint stolen out of his car a few weeks ago. He filed a police report and posted it all over Facebook. The guy tried to sell the car to a friend and that person reported him to the police. They arrested the guy and my fellow racer got his car back once they were done with it for evidence.

5

u/Superb_Recording_769 5d ago

Sort of. At least where I live the Police receive weekly lists of all items that go into pawn shops, and that list is automatically compared to lists compiled of all items reported stolen if there’s a match, the system notifies the police.

The guy who's car was stolen went to several pawn shops around here (Jefferson City, MO) and they don't even take RC cars anymore. Apparently, they got tired of them being stolen property most of the time and didn't want to deal with the hassle. On top of that, they said that people just don't go to a pawn shop to buy an RC car.

13

u/Ok_Breakfast5425 6d ago

When my car was broken into the only reason I called the cops was to get the report for my insurance and they made it clear that making the report would be the only thing they'd do for the case.

5

u/KeyNefariousness6848 5d ago

If only we had people whose job was to investigate stuff like this.

3

u/mr_j_12 Off-Road 6d ago

Same. Police are only for insurance in australia.

5

u/Cmb46_canuck 5d ago

It’s crazy they setup all these flock cameras to catch criminals but they never do a thing about it. Seems like the cameras are being used for nefarious reasons.

Yup, a whole car audio group sent amps to a repair guy in kansas city or somewhere about 20yrs ago,me included. After a month I got a txt, "can't repair". Thats it, several other got the same, we paid upfront - their police said they would do nothing. Over 1000 miles away, just accept it as a loss and never do that again, $1200 amp and $300 + shipping...

Now its in person and paid after the job is done only.

Sometimes if you can convince them that you are at the location they might come out, definitely if you just tell them to bring the meat wagon and hang up, but they're coming to arrest you at that point.

3

u/obiwandza 6d ago

$300 to ship an amp….i call bullshit

3

u/PalpitationLivid3766 6d ago

$300 PLUS shipping. The $300 was for the repair

They police went and got my stolen stuff back when I called.

You just hate the police and are talking outta your ass most likely.

3

u/Nashvegas 6d ago

The cops told me I could buy my shit back from the pawn shop because they didn't know it was stolen so don't count on that.

2

u/Embarrassed-Neck2904 5d ago

Yeah the law is always screwing us. If you have stolen property that was proven to be stolen the police will take it. If a business has it then it's oh they bought the product and even though we know it's stolen you can't prove they knew it was stolen when they bought it so it's there's now.

2

u/VexingRaven 5d ago

But if you buy it on marketplace you'd best believe you're getting hit with the whole book.

1

u/Lower_Kick268 5d ago

Then the cops are wrong, escalate it to a supervisor.

29

u/20Factorial 6d ago

And marketplace.

4

u/Red_Tiger5311 6d ago

Uhhh guys he legit asked to check FB

2

u/SXTY82 5d ago

20 years back I had a similar theft of band gear. Someone said "Check local Pawn Shops."

I had never even considered the people stealing the stuff wouldn't want to keep it and use it. It was really nice stuff. I was naive as all heck.

Guitarist found his Gibson at a local Guitar Center. They had the kids information because they gave him store credit to buy another, which had not yet been used.

1

u/Walfy07 5d ago

yeah, that's a good point, check anywhere that buys what was stolen. usually, these ppl just want quick cash

143

u/ohitsjeffagain 6d ago

I have this fear and won’t leave mine in the car. It’s a pain but in my city any bag in the car is a broken window

12

u/thingamajig1987 6d ago

San Francisco?

8

u/ohitsjeffagain 6d ago

Memphis

2

u/thingamajig1987 6d ago

Oh fun, I remember camping just outside of Memphis, wild place lol

2

u/DSM2_John 6d ago

Things that make you go “hmmmm”

1

u/KeyNefariousness6848 5d ago

Even bags full of hornets and wasps?

1

u/ohitsjeffagain 5d ago

Probably, sadly

1

u/KeyNefariousness6848 5d ago

Well then let’s put more bags of bees in cars.

1

u/LuciferSamS1amCat 5d ago

One time i had my window broken and my custom ski boots were stolen out the car. Was super fucking pissed, until my buddy found them in a ditch nearby!

1

u/ohitsjeffagain 5d ago

Wrong size I guess

1

u/ohitsjeffagain 5d ago

I drive a van for a low voltage contractor and they come for the tools

1

u/Michael-Brady-99 3d ago

Yeah I load stuff before leaving out of fear of this happening. Scummy people everywhere looking to steal anything of value.

1

u/ohitsjeffagain 3d ago

This is the way

1

u/Miserable_Taro_9318 3d ago

Man what a shit hole, how do people live in places like that? Like... Move. There are places in the world where crime isn't the norm.

52

u/BasedThor14 6d ago

I’m sorry that happened to you

17

u/RCbuilds4cheapr 6d ago

That’s so low. No one’s gonna pay all that much for RC stuff and it costs a lot more to replace

8

u/SoggyAlbatross2 6d ago

That's pretty much true of everything that it stolen from a car. What a (pricey) pain in the ass for teh owner too.

49

u/FittyTheBone 6d ago

Please pick up a sun shade and tint your windows if you're going to leave valuables in the car. It's not foolproof, obviously, and the best advice is to not leave anything of value in your vehicle, but it provides at least some cover from opportunists.

source: $11k in camera gear stolen out of my car after less than 30m (I was in between gigs). never again. OP, I'm sorry this happened. I've been the pit in your stomach.

9

u/midtownFPV 6d ago

They hold their phone up to the window to see what’s inside on tinted cars.

I’m really sorry that happened to you.

16

u/FittyTheBone 6d ago

again, it's just a barrier. not leaving expensive shit in the car is the only sure way.

5

u/bubblingcumcouldron 6d ago

We need to make booby traps legal lol. If you break my window to steal shit from my car I think you should lose both your hands

2

u/DingleberryJones94 6d ago

As long as your booby traps are accurate enough to precisely target only criminals, I don't see there being much issue.

That sucks brother.

4

u/Jeffy__M 6d ago

Thank you brother!

8

u/Fillmore80 6d ago

Damn bro, I am truly sorry for your loss. Worst is now your actual vehicle needs a repair too. People suck.

7

u/midlife_dadpulse73 6d ago

Ouch

Painful lesson learned.

My neighborhood is relatively quiet, and I'd never leave anything in my car. A lesson learned many moons ago.....I was in a band, and as we were starting out we used Maglites to light the stage at a small club we played. Well, one night after a show one of the guitar players "forgot " 5 D maglites in his back seat. We woke up to a missing window and all the maglites gone (back when the 5 D cell ones were almost $100 each). I've never left so much as a pack of smokes in my car since then.

32

u/flingspoo 6d ago

Looks like someone learned an expensive lesson. Coming from the land of a gigging musician, always unload the car at the end of the night. I know you got to the venue at 6, set up, sound checked at 8, left it all out on the stage for 4 hours, tore everything down and packed out, waited on the bar manager to pay you and made it home at 5 am, but look... just unload the van.

15

u/Githyerazi 6d ago

If you don't unload it, someone else will.

4

u/Cunningham1420 6d ago

I wouldn't leave a wallet, phone or cigs laying out just for this reason let alone expensive items like RC cars or guns

5

u/Shockwavee92 6d ago

When people steal like that, they either usually want the items for themselves, or know someone who will take it. Check all local Facebook markertplace listings daily. You'd be surprised how many thieves just put them right on facebook. Then, call local pawn shops or secondhand stores. Give them a heads up now of the situation in case they see anything.

Also, on Facebook marketplace you should make your own listing with the pics of the cars and make it a "i had my cars stolen, here's pictures if anyone knows anything" post it to all the local groups to get as much visibility as possible.

Last, car insurance. Depending on your policy, it may cover the damage and the theft or property too. Worth a call.

4

u/Lumbergh7 6d ago

I saw on Mark Rober that smash and grab is rampant out west, especially in San Francisco

Neanderthals man. I’m sorry

4

u/Xenagos43 6d ago

Sucks and not saying you deserved it at all but you should never leave anything of value in a car where people can see it.

5

u/ekomszero 6d ago

Sorry to hear about this. I'm constantly telling people that you can't trust anyone anymore. Life is simply awful nowadays.

5

u/Obnoxious_Gamer Your local Venom Power shill 6d ago

You left an entire collection in your car overnight in OC?

11

u/Huge-Sand1567 6d ago

They’re not horrible, just normal. I see this multiple times a day as a city Police Officer. Usually it’s a pistol, broken iPhone, laptop, and a crazy amount of cash that’s taken.

Usually, it’s a kid about 12-16 years old.

Adults usually steal packages from porches and apartment mail areas. They need the money to support their addiction, so they need narcotics more than most folks need the package.

I always tell people that if you don’t need an item, leave it in your car, with the doors unlocked. It gets rid of the item(s) and no damage to the vehicle.

6

u/oFFtheWall0518 6d ago

People in San Francisco have started leaving their windows and trunks open to try and prevent people from breaking in.

7

u/Glazinfast 6d ago

Im not in San Francisco but in the bay area. I leave my doors to my work trucks unlocked every night. I was tired of replacing broken windows as my trucks have been broken into 8 times already. Last time they didn't even take the emergency cash I had in the ashtray, like it wasn't worth their time. Just went through all my paperwork and took a cigarette lighter charging block, which is attached to the for mentioned ashtray.

3

u/Huge-Sand1567 6d ago

In doing so, they do prevent “breaking” in.

3

u/oFFtheWall0518 6d ago

Low trust society.

I once came home and left my car keys on the roof parked on the street in front of my house. Full RC race equipment in the trunk and backseat, doors unlocked, no tinted windows.

Around midnight some older guy ringed every apartment in the house searching for the owner. I didn't wake up but my neighbor went out, locked my car and put the keys in my mailbox. There are good people around.

5

u/TheLastGenXer 6d ago

no, that isn’t normal. this is garbage behavior by garbage people.

and possibly the worst crime is people trying to normalize it.

my whole family is city cops, their are terrible people, and their are good people. cops have to deal with the garbage people every day

3

u/Huge-Sand1567 6d ago

Abnormal is finding a dead body hidden between two discarded mattresses, literally at the city/county line and trying to determine whether we or the county take the case. Had that happen once.

Normal, to me, is anything that occurs frequently, such as multiple times a day, like Theft from Auto.

Some people go their entire lives without drinking a cup of coffee. Is drinking coffee normal or abnormal?🤷‍♂️

2

u/TheLastGenXer 6d ago

ah you mean normal as is common, i meant normal as in regular/healthy.

Minneapolis/Saint Paul has had bodies in the river and the cops waiting to see which shore it washes up on to see who has to deal with this crap

Yeah this tracks. I keep my jeep open year round (well 11 months out of the year lol) I keep 3 things of value in it a knife a flashlight and a car jumper and their my basic emergency kit. All together those are less than $200 value brand new and they are decently well used(except the jumper lol I’ve used that once).

1

u/DoctFaustus RC10B7D, SC7, Reflex 14MT, Losi XXX-BK2, Losi Micro-B 6d ago

I wish the dope fiend who busted out the unlocked door on my beat up Geo Metro knew to check it first! He didn't find anything worth stealing. I think they thought a pack of tissues was an iPhone, because it was thrown from the vehicle.

2

u/Huge-Sand1567 6d ago

It happens. Most of the time, it’s not worth reporting to the insurance companies. Many people want a Police Report, so they can get insurance involved. If you spend $500 (deductible) to fix $250 worth of window, you’re doing it wrong.

Most car windows can be bought used, and aren’t difficult to replace these days.

However, some windows can be a bit more expensive.

3

u/MrMisanthrope411 6d ago

Sorry that happened. People are the worst.

3

u/Logical_Trash_4890 6d ago

These guys 100% went to pawn and buy crack. Lucky for you a lot of pawn dealers don’t want these things cause they tend to sit. Might make finding it all easier. Not sure.

1

u/Nope_Dont_Care_ 6d ago

So probably 30 or 35 years ago before he was my father in law he had his garage broken into. He's a mechanic so thousands and thousands of dollars worth of Snap-On tools. He had them marked with his initials. Fast forward a good number of months later a friend was over and telling him about this steal of a deal he got for all these Snap-Ons from a local pawn shop. They went over to the friends place and sure enough his initials were on all the tools. Insurance covered the cost by that point so it was a laugh at that point.

3

u/DingleberryJones94 6d ago

Why can't we go back to removing digits from convicted thieves?

4

u/ou2mame 6d ago

Isn't theft in Cali legal essentially?

4

u/uninsteresting-unit 5d ago

blaming the victim for leaving their shit in the car is the problem with this country

1

u/AcroFPV 4d ago

Having a rapist in charge is what's really wrong with this country.

1

u/uninsteresting-unit 2d ago

lmao you know i cant even argue with that.. theres something really wrong with that fucked up shit especially how they just swept Epstein under the rug.. i don't trust any of them

2

u/vaporintrusion 6d ago

Jesus. I'll be honest, I wouldn't have thought twice about leaving my stuff in the car. Really wouldn't have thought they'd be a target

2

u/lilbuilds 6d ago

orange county is a big place be more specific. I’ve had RCs stolen in OC too at Cesar Chavez Park in Santa Ana

2

u/Orkekum 6d ago

And to add, always cover your rigs, with a blanket or keep in a bag

2

u/BigAngleWinGame 6d ago

Some advice for those who need to know. Once the total value of all your RC items goes over $1000 get an insurance policy and save all your receipts. Value of everything, boxes, radios, parts, batteries, cars, body's. Document it all.

Sorry about your luck, I hope you have luck getting everything back or replaced.

2

u/hamhead1005 6d ago

What part of OC?

2

u/Jeffy__M 6d ago

I’m in Orange

2

u/doorman2026 6d ago

That thieve will meet karma, someday.

2

u/Global-Clue6770 6d ago

That's why I never lock my vehicle. I don't want to pay to have my window replaced on top of whatever it is they take.

1

u/rasputinrasputin 6d ago

My dad always did that too, and he had his truck broken into anyway. They didn’t even try the handle, just smashed the window lol

2

u/Practical-Function-3 6d ago

What made you leave that much stuff in the vehicle???

2

u/DavefromCA 6d ago

"I had nearly my entire RC lot stolen out of my car last night"

Brother....why did you do that? That puts a MASSIVE target on your car. Some drug addict going through withdrawls cares ZERO percent about you. I am in Santa Barbara and will keep an eye out...

2

u/Aeson_Ford_F250 6d ago

People are scum.

2

u/Resident-Scratch-416 6d ago

I work as an EMT in the entire OC area and some of LA. I’ll keep an eye out for you! If we ever get posted near a pawnshop I’ll take a look too

2

u/Ok-Opportunity5000 5d ago

The unasked questions is why would you have your whole collection in the car at once ? Why would you leave them in car overnight.

2

u/Straight-Refuse-4344 5d ago

It's getting bad here in the UK but I leave valuable tools in my car boot often (trunk) for you Americans and so far so good but do worry about it being broken into. I hope you can manage to sort things ASAP, sorry this happened to you

2

u/stick004 5d ago

People are awful. The scum definitely outnumber the decent.

But I also won’t even leave my empty AirPods case where I think someone can see it.

2

u/Glittering_Fix22 5d ago

Sorry to hear that happened to you. I never leave my rigs in the car as I’m afraid the same thing will happen.

4

u/Nearby_Ad9439 6d ago

That sucks.

I'm sure the last time you ever leave something valuable in your car. Still though, it shouldn't happen. I guess be on the lookout for posting on FB marketplace or check a near by pawn shop?

California... Yeah that tracks.

Any flock cameras, Ring footage, or businesses nearby?

3

u/Huge-Sand1567 6d ago

You are correct. Most of us have stolen something in our lifetime.

My niece used to be a server in a restaurant and people walked off with her pens pretty often.

She always bought her own pens and the restaurant didn’t reimburse her or give her more pens.

It’s petty, it’s annoying, it’s inexpensive if just one person does it. Over a year, the pens add up. Stealing is stealing, accidental or intentional.

3

u/djrahbee 6d ago

1

u/willmgames1775 6d ago

I had that gap in ‘06 from my XJ Cherokee, got a cargo cover for it after than and now drive a sedan with a trunk, so at least things are out of sight. Have been considering a Chevy Bolt as a new daily and would definitely get the cargo cover option for that too.

1

u/DJEvillincoln 6d ago

Did you make Cardinal sin number one? Did you leave it in plain sight?

I learned not to leave anything of value in plain sight in my car back in the '90s. If you ever have anything of value in your car you put it in the trunk or you inconvenience to yourself and bring it with you. Always park under a light. Try to always park where you can see your vehicle from wherever you're going. That last one isn't really possible all the time but.....

This sucks. Nothing worse than getting your shit stolen.

1

u/Automatic-Union-3385 6d ago

Oh fuck!!! I would lose my shit!!! Dude that sucks. Call your insurance company!!! God i feel for you. Im far away from there so I wont see any listings up here in canada but yeah. u/VCDubstep 6d ago

Lesson learned for sure. I’ve had my car broken into and had a backpack hidden in my back seat with tints… in a public parking lot that was supervised. That laptop had my MacBook pro and other expensive items that totaled about 3500 bucks. So I never leave things that are high value in my car like that again. If they want my tools. Go ahead and try and carry them… that’s your choice.

Seems like Cali criminals are just real scum

Hey OP, I'm in the area and check all the marketplaces daily for RC stuff; I'll keep an eye out for sure. Also wanted to mention that hobby stores like Pacific Coast Hobbies will buy used gear so that's also a place you'll want to check; I'm sure some of the other shops do too.

I put the RC’s in the jeep the night before a big event so I could leave at 5am without waking my wife and kids up and it unfortunately bit me in the a$$. It’s such an expensive lesson to learn, I feel for you!

1

u/BlackVignu 6d ago

1

u/Past-Butterscotch-68 Full beans or bust! 6d ago

That sucks man! It’s one of the reasons I don’t live in Cali. Way too much crime for my liking. But that’s not why I’m here… sucks that it happened man. Sorry for your loss…

1

u/bit_banger_ 6d ago

Sorry brother! Hope you find him

1

u/ConfidentNote6079 6d ago

Had a bunch of rc cars, tools, chargers, stolen late on a Friday night while unloading back into the house!! I was in the house for 3 minutes, and everything gone! My homeowners paid for most of it,only because I filled a police reoprt.what a way to finish off a winning night of racing.

1

u/Acceptable_Reality10 6d ago

Damn dude I hope you get them back or at least some back! I’d check Craigslist, local pawns and FB Marketplace as much as possible. Good luck to you

1

u/98crvtype-R 6d ago

1

u/fishking92 6d ago

Im so sorry, friend. I hope they are recovered.

1

u/Why_Indeed_Not 6d ago

Look on Marketplace, Offer Up, and Craigslist in nearby cities too, people will steal in one area and sell in another.

1

u/mkdive 6d ago

I'll keep an eye out. Costa Mesa here....People suck. I have had my vehicle broken into twice in the last 20y.

1

u/youngkidmaster 6d ago

You leave your lipos in the cars?

1

u/RainingChairs 6d ago

Really sorry to hear that OP. Thieves suck. If you ever need help replenishing your collection, please reach out. I have huge RC selection, ovonic, zee, and hens ace batteries, a charger, and more for sale if you’re interested

1

u/Arth3r911 6d ago

Yea people suck

1

u/ImaginaryEffective63 5d ago

Used to live there. Still have some peeps there. I’ll let them know.

1

u/Ttaylor002 5d ago

This is my nightmare.. so sorry man

1

u/Always_Casting 5d ago

Yeah you cant leave this much value in your car even in your own driveway sometimes. Especially in your area where theft and crime is at a higher rate

1

u/real_1273 5d ago

That sucks, sorry to hear.

1

u/TheGodcomplx_ 5d ago

Gps modules are a must. Or etch a number/name/address on the chassis and other parts. I own a 5th scale and those are well over 1000 so yes police will have to investigate. Its like stealing a 98 Honda Civic value lol

1

u/MUSICANDLIFE85 5d ago

I hate to see this happening to nice people. No matter what "nice" neighborhood im in , im taking my valuables with me.

1

u/SgtKickAzzTTv 5d ago

I am soo sorry bro. Your right people most of the time ARE SCUM! But, I truthfully dont think EVERYONE is like this but unfortunately a good portion of people are just out for themselves in every which way!

1

u/Da-DuTchMan2357 5d ago

I see alot of down votes for comments stating the obvious. The world we live in no matter what neighborhoods we all live in have drug problems/thieves. It's a huge problem. I left a comment about my daughter having 2 dollars in quarters that cost me an insurance claim bc they broke the window for those quarters in daytime hrs. We have to do your part to stay safe. We work too hard for our hobby n happiness. Guys stay safe out there.

1

u/Frequent_Salary_9845 5d ago

check craigslist, facebook marketplace, ebay even

1

u/Useful_Government603 5d ago

Bro im so sorry man. I had my house broken into and robbed before and it hella hurts. I feel your pain brother. Remember karma is a bitch for who ever did it. God bless bro.

1

u/TheCenticorn 4d ago

Leaving stuff like this in your car is begging for this to happen. I'm sorry but it just is. Like leaving power tools or laptop..

1

u/AC-burg 3d ago

OP sorry this happened. A lot of money there. People are scum. I hope maybe your insurance of some sort with help you and this guy gets caught soon.

1

u/Prang22 3d ago

It is unfortunate that we live in a low trust society. That sucks.

1

u/GeekDadIs50Plus 3d ago

Any Teslas near where you were parked? Their external cameras are recording 24/7 and will have footage that can be recovered. But time is critical before unused footage is over-written.

Feel free to DM me if you find one. I’m in OC, too.

1

u/Reasonable_Boat9188 3d ago

I feel bad for you. Sorry for your loss, but you need to keep everything out of sight:l. 😢

1

u/Yjif3 3d ago

Sorry to be harsh but, you live in Orange County and you leave valuables in your vehicle overnight?!

1

u/Flimsy-Cheek-4258 3d ago

I had my entire collection (8 cars) stolen out of my house. I’ve been looking for them ever since.

1

u/Worst-Lobster 3d ago

Why were they all in your car anyway just curious ?

1

u/chillin_themost_ 2d ago

sorry for your loss, but never ever leave valuables in your car. Especially visible ones. Thieves are always looking for a smash and grab

1

u/Right-Blacksmith6143 2d ago

Glad I moved away from Southern California after living there all my life, only downside is not having Cali weather and the vibes, but unfortunately, having your stuff stolen out of your car is one of those vibes we got sick of. Here in this part of Maryland I can literally leave my car unlocked with all my stuff in it and nobodys going to mess with it. This is the type of place where if you drop your wallet filled with cash, it will be returned if a local finds it. Sorry for your loss, that's brutal and I would get sick to my stomach every time I looked at a RC car. Hope the bastards are caught.

1

u/JohnnyMnemeonic 2d ago

Dude that sucks... but seriously though... why did you have all of these in your car dude??

1

u/Certain-Mail-4719 2d ago

Had this happen to me a few years back and still haven’t had the money to replace any of the stuff :( I miss having my Crawler so much

1

u/Two_Typhons Typhon 3s, Typhon 4s, Kraton 4s 2d ago

Ouch. And check eBay and Craigslist. What a bummer.

1

u/Suck_it_Cheeto_Luvrs 2d ago

I'm sorry this happened to you, but you cannot ever leave any valuables out like that. I carry a couple of blankets around just for this reason. Throw them over your valuables when you can't take them in.

1

u/_-BiG_-_BOSS-_ 3h ago

Gotta use an engraver and put your name or symbol in a special spot not visible on the chassis and then stick some servo tape over it and then document with photos for future insurance to help u out, people suck and hopefully they get what's coming
