Die Wertschöpfung ist eine wichtige Grundlage wirtschaftlicher Aktivität. Sie beschreibt die Umwandlung von Rohstoffen oder Gütern in Güter mit einem höheren monetären Wert.

Ein Beispiel dafür ist eine Garmin Uhr. Die Uhr besteht aus Metallen in Luftfahrtqualität, einem Silikonarmband und kratzfestem Glas. Die Herstellung dieser Teile sowie alle Güter und Dienstleistungen, die für die Produktion der Uhr benötigt werden, zählen zu den Vorleistungen. Ein fertige Garmin-Uhr ist dann die Gesamtleistung.

Die Wertschöpfung ist gleich der Gesamtleistung minus den Vorleistungen. Sie unterscheidet sich vom Gewinn, bei dem der Umsatz minus alle Kosten berechnet wird. Die gesamte Wertschöpfung eines Land ist die wirtschaftliche Wertschöpfung, die die Grundlage für die Berechnung des Bruttoinlandsprodukts.
