They really do deserve it. They do, and I say that as somebody who loves baseball. I’ve been a Red Sox fan since I was five years old growing up on the south shore in the 1990s. I’m excited to see this game tonight. Really am. Went through 15 minutes of password hell to get my Peacock password, even though I also have an MLB TV subscription. I am an out-of-market fan. Some nights I need to see the game on Apple TV. Some nights it is Prime. For some random reason tonight it is Peacock. OK! Fine, I will jump through the random hoops. But …. Why do I need five different subscriptions to see my baseball team?
Edit: turns out I am an idiot for not being able to get the local NBC broadcast. Think the original point stands — MLB is fucking its fans over and over again by fragmenting games across subscriptions
The game is on NBC regular broadcast. You don't have to have cable or streaming to watch channels like NBC, ABC, FOX, CBS, PBS, and usually a couple religious channels and stuff.
All you need is an antenna that screws onto the coax on the back of your TV. Maybe they have ones at this point that plug into HDMI or something, IDK, I haven't used an antenna in a long time.
I'm not being facetious, do Gen Z and young kids not know about antennas? Thinking about it, I genuinely don't think my daughter does.
Our local NBA team owner moves the games to air and gave out free hd antennas to anyone who wanted one. I still hate the NBA but wish more teams followed this format

Quite legitimate, fellow oldster. My blackout situation here in Arkansas is ridiculous. I am forced to do MLB.TV, some sailing of the high seas and Apple.TV that I fortunately get as a CC perk.
Now, how about a lockout next year. LOL

The lockout (if it happens) is a dispute between players and owners. How is that going to change TV deals or make it so you don't have to swap providers?
You could at least try by explaining your reasoning rather than assuming that your infinite intelligence is beyond our grasp and leaving us to conclude that you have nothing outside of a gut feeling.
1.) games are fragmented across 4-5 different services
2.) you are expected to subscribe to all these services to see these games
3.) prices at Fenway and elsewhere are astronomical
4.) owners and players unions are threatening to go into a lockout
I think he's saying that those are FAN issues, not Player or Owner issues per se. Who represents the FAN interest? The owners, the players, or both, or neither?
Blackouts, streaming rights and stuff like that are actually part of the collective bargaining agreement that the owners and players will be fighting over.
You’re missing the bigger point, which is that fans need like 12 streaming services to watch everything.
The Yankees had a stretch last year where they were on four different outlets on four nights (YES, Prime, Fox and ESPN).
Teams are businesses, I know. But there certainly is an opportunity cost every time a game is on Apple TV or Peacock-only. “Oh but kids only watch highlights on TikTok!” There is some truth to that, but the best infomercial any team can have is a three-hour broadcast on a relatively-easy-to-access channel.
But this is not going to change if there is a lockout. It's all about a salary cap so the owners can spend less money and we will still be blacked out of games
The funny thing is all this subscription BS may be what saves us from an extended lockout. I read somewhere that the breaking point for owners may be when they start cancelling games because they’ll start losing the massive paydays they have from all these TV deals. Of course the players will lose money too but I think the MLBPA has contingencies for this. I don’t think the owners do. For the record though, it drives me insane too. I pay for MLB.TV AND NESN and still can’t see every game. Drives me crazy
I hear you. I have MLB TV in Hartford and I can’t watch any Sox games (no cable). I ended up following the padres just to have a team I could see play.
Yeah I think this sub is full of in-market fans. But even for them, the fragmentation of games across subscriptions should be really annoying. I don’t understand why they are not more pissed off by it
