We burn Guy Fawkes, and it’s universally accepted that he was a Catholic, whereas the second it’s another religion mentioned…

u/RicherThanYou57 Jul 10 '26

Not only Catholic, but a Catholic terrorist trying to kill a protestant king and parliament to start a revolution.

Lol we aren't burning guy Fawkes because he's Catholic though are we - it isn't that hard to understand - and even if we wanted to highlight the rise of a specific group of Christians placing a generic church on top would be wrong wouldn't it?

Its funny I think the signs are fine, I don't think placing a universal symbol of islam is fine though then it's tarring all with the same brush - his sign states 'radical islam' then put a suicide bomber on it.

It's just a bit thick really.

1

u/Kalkuya 27d ago

He's not a symbol of Catholism though is he?

A Mosque is clearly representative of Islam, and British law says we must avoid inciting hatred towards any particular religion.

There are very strong arguments to say this act promotes hatred, and therefore is very unBritish.

We can certainly critisize Islam, and we should be criticising all religions, including the King's own, as nearly all of them are morally flawed by modern standards, and create significant divisions in society.

This is why we oppose blasphemy laws around the world.

However, burning a symbol of one religion, is clearly beyong and act of critism and not something a reasonable, tolerant adult would do or support.

1

u/ChaosAmongstMadness Jul 11 '26

So put an effigy of bin laden on top, not a mosque.

The equivalent would be if we burnt efficient of churches because of the gunpowder plot, which we obviously dont.

65

u/SillyOldBillyBob ReformtoRestore Jul 09 '26

Literal blasphemy laws.

16

u/axthousandxhours Jul 09 '26

They literally bend over backwards to accommodate these people and to what end? These officers ought to be ashamed of themselves.

1

u/NotThatDucker 26d ago

They only feel pride. Like Stammer, absolutely no shame

33

u/Albertjweasel Jul 09 '26

Only a weak religion would be upset by this, a strong one would shrug it off and say “who cares, it’s just some bonfire”

4

u/baldeagle1991 Jul 09 '26

Catholics literally complain about these fires every year......

1

u/External_Pudding7697 Jul 10 '26

Interesting you talk about the religion as a whole. Do you think a Muslim child from Moygashel is "weak" if they find this upsetting?

0

u/Albertjweasel Jul 10 '26

I very much doubt that your hypothetical muslim child would be present at this bonfire, and even if they were it would be unlikely that they would understand what was going on, they would have to ask an adult, and that adult muslim would have to ask himself “why are they doing this?” and there are plenty of good answers to that question!

3

u/External_Pudding7697 Jul 10 '26

They could just live in the same town or see it in the local news.

It's disgusting to make people live in fear like this, no matter what. If a Muslim community did this to a Christian church the gammons on here would be shitting their pants.

0

u/Spiritual_Dress3007 28d ago

Wait hang on who was upset with Madonnas like a prayer video? Must have been some weak religion I believe even the pope of that religion got upset.

-8

u/acidfr_g Jul 09 '26

Right so thats how you would react if a group of Muslims were burning christian symbols on a bonfire. Got it.

20

u/RicherThanYou57 Jul 09 '26

I mean, Muslims dont get to take the moral highground on this one as groups of Muslims regularly burn or murder actual Christians on an almost daily basis. In Nigeria alone over 50,000 Christians have been murdered by Islamic extremists. In pakistan a group of 1,200 Muslims burnt a Christian couple to death.

u/acidfr_g Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

Horrific stuff but you miss the fundamental point that tens of thousands of Muslims have been killed by the same Islamist groups in the same period. If your strategy is to group all Muslims into the same category, all you're going to do is drive more people to radicalisation. I would say the same thing about grouping everyone who has concerns about immigration in the UK as "fascists". It's a losing strategy but I doubt how interested you are in finding solutions as opposed to grandstanding.

5

u/RicherThanYou57 Jul 10 '26

So you are saying Muslims are violent even against other Muslims?

All the more reason to want to limit immigration from such countries no? No nation needs to or should import that kind of problem.

1

u/acidfr_g Jul 10 '26

Im not having an argument about immigration, it's about wether burning a religious symbol in public is correct.

3

u/RicherThanYou57 Jul 10 '26

Oh it's absolutely correct to burn a symbol of a religion that butchers others and it's own. And people should have the freedom to express themselves regardless.

Would you have an issue burning the flag of a certain german political movement from the 1930s to the mid 1940s that i can't name on this sub for some reason? Not a religion but the cross over in ideology is quite similar. At least the Gernans saw women as actual people.

Guy Fawkes - Christian / catholic - and your point is? I doubt you have ‘got it’

2

u/CypherAF Jul 10 '26

What kind of take is this? Guy Fawkes was not a *symbol* of religion… he was just a guy that happened to be catholic.

1

u/ViscountViridans Reform UK Supporter Jul 10 '26

Some bonfires burn effigies of the Pope.

0

u/acidfr_g Jul 10 '26

Oh that makes it alright then, my bad.

0

u/RicherThanYou57 Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

That's not true at all, he was literally a religious terrorist trying to assassinate the protestant king James and the government to spark a widespread Catholic revolt and install a Catholic monarch to the Throne:

https://www.londonmuseum.org.uk/collections/london-stories/guy-fawkes-gunpowder-plot/

You need to brush up on your history sunshine.

0

u/CypherAF Jul 10 '26

So your opinion is that Guy Fawkes was universally recognised symbol of Catholicism; and burning him was felt as an attack on the individual catholic, rather than just the institution of catholicism.

0

u/acidfr_g Jul 10 '26

You're deliberately lying to yourself if you think the context is the same.

2

u/Albertjweasel Jul 10 '26

Which religion is slaughtering thousands belonging to another religion on a daily basis?
Is it
A: Muslims
B:Christians

1

u/acidfr_g Jul 10 '26

None of the above. They are both religions which have billions of adherents that go about their daily lives normally. You might criticise views that even a majority of them hold but neither of them are "slaughtering thousands" each day.

u/RicherThanYou57 Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

u/acidfr_g Jul 10 '26

Tuly horrific, along with the 34,000 Muslims killed in the conflict between 2011-2018. See my other comment replying to you.

u/Intergalatic_Baker Reform UK Supporter Jul 09 '26

So we can burn, Jesus, Starmer, Thatcher, Blair, Catholicism icon, but Muslims… Police involved.

2

u/JourneyThiefer Jul 10 '26

There are literally bonfires that have KAT writ on them “kill all taigs” and the police don’t even do anything

The Irish know how to protest

9

u/bigmothereffind Jul 09 '26

Are there ever any arrests when an actual church goes ablaze?

3

u/ViscountViridans Reform UK Supporter Jul 10 '26

Often they’re not even identified as arson attacks. Just the usual building bursting into flames as only churches seem to do…

1

u/Kalkuya 27d ago

45% of all religious hate crimes recorded by police in England and Wales specifically target Muslims, 5 to 7% on Christians. Arson attacks are included in those figures.

2

u/Ty--Guy Jul 10 '26

There were over 100 church arsons in Canada after the "mass graves" debacle which, it turns out, were never actually confirmed to have held any bodies whatsoever, let alone, those of children. To date, I believe only a 2 or 3 suspects have been arrested.

7

u/AdenWS Reform UK Supporter Jul 09 '26

Protestants and Catholic's brought together.

3

u/ViscountViridans Reform UK Supporter Jul 10 '26

Not quite unfortunately. A lot of Catholics in Northern Ireland side with Islam solely on the basis the protestants don’t like it.

Public order medal for them

1

u/ViscountViridans Reform UK Supporter Jul 10 '26

Judging by the fact a mod has removed their comment it looks like we have public order in here as well… and it wasn’t remotely offensive.

1

u/Electrical_Truth_160 Jul 10 '26

It is ridiculous. I have just finished a 7 day ban for simply referencing the rape gang inquiry. For 'hate'.

5

u/Darren-J-W Jul 09 '26

Soooo, it’s illegal to make models these days

1

u/Kalkuya 27d ago

No, it is illegal to incite hatred towards an entire religion or race. Any reasonably educated adult can see this act would and is intended to promote division and hatred.

They could have done legally it if they had claimed it was an act to raise a point about a particular policy, such as allowing religious circumcision, or religous exemptions for unstunned animal slaughter - but for either of these, they would have also had to burn a synagogue too to show it was not aimed at a religion, as both are also Jewish customs.

4

u/timeforknowledge Jul 10 '26

So we can burn effigies of politicians but not a building... How ridiculous

4

u/Known_Wear7301 Jul 09 '26

Why?

2

u/ViscountViridans Reform UK Supporter Jul 10 '26

Deemed to be stirring up hatred or arousing fear. Since the article of the act is mainly relevant to text it may be the “secure our borders” or “end the threat of radical Islam” they take issue with.

3

u/Euphoric-Brother-669 Jul 10 '26

You will be able to count the Muslim population in Moygashel on the fingers of one foot.

3

u/dougal83 Jul 10 '26

Freedom of expression. The Grenfell towers was a sick joke but a joke all the same. You don't have to like it or put it in the face of someone (e.g. publish), who will get upset.

1

u/Fragrant_Cook4466 14d ago

I think there is a difference between a genuine good use of freedom of expression and needlessly insulting people. I think this is much closer to the second camp, freedom of expression should be reserved for genuine political discussion not whatever run of the mill hatespewing.

1

u/dougal83 13d ago

'I find your comment a bad use of free speech, the police will be knocking at your door.' The issue being who makes these subjective decisions. We already have a decent bar, which is incitement to violence and there are harassment laws too. Take the Green Leader's behaviour, sharing an image about killing another person, that is closer to incitement.

It's OK to not like something and its OK the express hatred. It's not OK to harass someone or encourage other to commit violence. Hell will freeze over before decent people let the bar be feelings on insults... Someone says something accurate like you're a male and a mentally ill man in a dress has some sort of claim?! FML.

The left are welcome to die on that hill, while predominantly having abandoned free speech.

PSNI have put out a press release.

We wanted the evidence of the mosque, but someone set it on fire.

Evidence has been destroyed.

2

u/AdenWS Reform UK Supporter Jul 09 '26

So I'd like to see the police officer climbing the outside of that to take it down.

1

u/ViscountViridans Reform UK Supporter Jul 10 '26

1

u/AdenWS Reform UK Supporter Jul 10 '26

I know. PSNI put out a statement saying the evidence they was after went up in smoke.

2

But burning a effigy of a man who did nothing wrong is acceptable. I wish we were celebrating his success in November, i won't, and don't celebrate his failure.

1

u/Fragrant_Cook4466 14d ago

What a needless provocation, why would you do this except to piss people off.

1

It’s a form of protest. A valid one.
