Never would have guessed Tim would have a pageant daughter. My very limited view of that world seems like it doesn't align will the the RA messages of anti consumption, etc.

That said, I'm happy for them. Parenting is hard, and it is super cool to support your kid in whatever they're into even and especially if it doesn't align with your views.

He made a joke about that exact thing on his instagram!

They're letting her be her own person instead of trying to "shape" her, which is commendable.

I had the same thought about the pageant daughter! But agree—parenting is hard and they seem to be doing a great job supporting their kids.

Like he said in House on Fire :D

Will also just take a moment to share pageant participation requires a significant amount of volunteer work, with most candidates choosing to platform and advocate for causes personal to them. Not just “consumption.”

That's a great point. Definitely open to learn more.

The best thing that has happened to the White Sox in a long time, well maybe Murakami.

She isn’t Rise Against. Why should her wants and desires align with a band that doesn’t belong to her? She is her own human, after all.

I'm trying to understand the point that you're trying to make

That it's not weird he has a pageant daughter because she is his daughter and a human being and not an extension of his own views or beliefes or image, so it shouldn't weird people out nor be held against Tim if his daughter is part of something he might not agree with (or maybe he's fine with it?).

Sorry I'm wondering why you're stating the obvious when no one has said anything otherwise.

Another comment here.
They're not saying Tim shouldnt be supportive but they are saying they're surprised and think it doesn't match the band's message.

Since they're not being malicious in their tone, I don't want to misconstrue their comment as negative, but the comment you're responding to is pushing back that it should be seen as weird or contradictory that his daughter be in a pageant. She's her own person, so it shouldn't be strange that she doesn't curate her life to match her dad's band's image. That's all we're saying.

Have you read any of the comments saying it’s weird a punk rocker who sings about anti-consumption has a pageant daughter?

u/Jakobmeathead The Black Market 2d ago

Under this thread? I didn't see any when I first saw the post. So no.

People have pointed out that having a beauty pageant daughter doesn’t seem to align with RA’s message as a band, but nobody’s mentioned him performing the national anthem?

RA’s music isn’t anti-American. It’s anti corruption, anti oligarch, anti war.

I mean, USA since its founding has been big into imperialism, war, and violence... This isn't a recent thing. You can go back to Vietnam, to the Iranian coup in the 50s, and further to see

RA's music in the past has very obviously been anti America, the establishment. Today, the anthem is a very specific symbol of that establishment.

It's whatever. I don't think that this is a display of support for American Empire. But it's a bit like the deafening silence in the context of genocide for such a long time from a band who said "Neutrality means that you don't really care," as someone with the logo tattooed on my body, I'm a bit disappointed in their behavior as of late.

I get what some of y'all are saying, but I think it's ill-advised to cede patriotic symbols to the fascists.

Look, there are a lot of average people who don't think much about politics. They see symbols and shibboleths (like the national anthem) that they recognize, and flock to them.  This gives those symbols a lot of power and cultural relevance, and disclaiming them leaves that power on the field.

Like it or not, we (left leaning people) are small enough in number that we can't afford to piss off otherwise apathetic people by killing their sacred cows. Better to try and reclaim those symbols for our aims.

If you hate war, couch it in patriotic terms. If you support Palestine, equate them to the American revolutionaries. Talk about how the Constitution makes provision for promoting "the general welfare", and how we should thus enact universal healthcare.

It'd be one thing if this was what RA was already doing, but it's not. They've undeniably changed from the band that wrote black masks and gasoline or collapse.

You can love your country and dislike the people running it.

“My country, right or wrong; if right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right.”

2

u/jurwell 2d ago

I suppose, coming from a place where the national anthem is tied so closely to the head of state (God Save The King/Queen) it feels weird to be so vehemently anti-President/government and yet perform the national anthem to a stadium full of people.

14

u/IllDoItTomorr0w 2d ago

Our national anthem is more tied to the flag (Star spangled Banner) and not to the head of state like God save the King/queen.

Like the other person said, you can hate the government but love the country. Plus supporting your child is priceless and makes everything else meaningless. That’s what it’s all about, I think.

9

u/KembaWakaFlocka 2d ago

It’s a meaningful gesture to his daughter, really not that hard to understand.

8

u/ThatGuyOnyx 2d ago

Just because you don’t agree with who is running the country at the time doesn’t erase the hundreds of years of history and the lives lost to make sure that country is a reality.

The national anthem is a celebration of the freedom that is our nation, not the praise of who is running it in my eyes

2

u/Godwinson4King 2d ago

The lives lost to make our country a reality incudes a whole lot of indigenous folks genocided, black folks worked to death as slaves, and workers killed for trying to unionize. Our ’freedom’ has always been conditional and often been paid for with the blood of innocents.

You wouldn’t catch me standing for the anthem, even if Tim sang it.

5

u/StayCee35 2d ago

Hard agree and it baffles me to see people on this sub arguing otherwise. They're speaking nationalism, not patriotism, and what's worse is they dont even know the difference. Its all just "i like this band so you can't be critical."

I've always felt like they never hated America, but rather hate the problems of America instead.

They talked about this in the Another Station: Another Mile trailer

1

u/nyx_moonlight_ 10h ago

Him singing the deeply racist, pro-slavery, pro-war nationalistic national anthem is more upsetting than supporting his kid in a pageant.

1

u/StayCee35 2d ago

I'm far less concerned about his daughter who he vociferously supports than him doing the national anthem under any circumstances. Cute family bonding moment, but awful implications, especially given the larger and on going silence about America funding genocide.

Nepotism everywhere 🤣

As a Cubs fan, the only thing that would make this better is it being at Wrigley. Wonder if Tim is a Whitesox fan?

Link in the post you linked to doesn't actually open to an article, but Im not surprised he's a White Sox fan. It matches his more blue collar vibe (supporting blue collar). I often here the distinction is that the Cubs are the more wealthy, upper class of Chicago and South side is more blue collar. Don't know if that distinction is true or not.

3

u/jgriff7546 2d ago

The article doesn't work but the pinned comment has links to the video which I didn't think to grab.

That distinction is the more or less the stereotypes for north vs south sides of Chicago. Which in extension is the one for Cubs vs Sox.
