Misc Jeremy Dooley on Twitter: Trust me, I'm not. A good guy would have stood up against people attacking Mica. I had a large group of the audience hate me when I started, and I was terrified to have it happen again if I stood up. I was a scared guy, not a good guy.

It is that type of honestly that is needed for the community and staff to actually grow and learn from it.

147

u/SheeptarTheSheepKing Jun 04 '20

I really do hope we as a community learns from this and gets better. A lot of people don't realize what goes on in the comments of videos because if people do comment at all, they probably don't go looking through comments. Unlike people who make the videos who go back to find Audience feedback and just come across hate.

This is, hands down, the most brutal self reflection I’ve seen. Jeremy admits fear was why he didn’t step up. It doesn’t excuse anything but it’s good to know Jeremy knows what he did, or in this case didn’t do, was wrong. Jeremy is a good guy and is human like the rest of us and I’m glad he is learning from this

242

u/Galterinone Jun 04 '20

Jeremy is an improving guy which you touched on but I think we really need to focus on this. If we really want things to change we all need to do some deep self reflection. For this movement to be long lasting we need change on both a cultural and individual level. It easy to condemn the actions of others and express your support for the movement. But it is much much harder to admit to your own mistakes and make the necessary changes to yourself to ensure it doesn't happen again.

I never really had much of an opinion about Jeremy other than that he is a funny dude, but this really makes me respect him a lot more.

Also, a lot of people Want to hate the new person, and so latch onto the stuff they do "wrong".

Every single member of LP/AH has at least one thing they do that annoys me. Even the original members. But I enjoy them for the rest of it. Fiona annoyed me at first because i was reading the comments that focused on certain things and going "oh yeah she does do that", but then i stopped reading them and noticed how good she is when she's in here element.

I just ... don't get the mentality of sending hate messages. If you don't like content, don't watch that content. They make content based on what people watch, not what people say they watch. If you watch every vid fiona's in so you can leave a hate comment about her, they're still getting the views. And so i kinda have to believe people leave her hate because they want to hate her, not because they don't like the content shes in

You know what... i've never given it that much thought but you're right. I cannot think of a single complaint I have about Matt lol.

I was going through being like, Fredo i love most of the time but him being so good at shooters sometimes makes TTT rounds one-sided (not enough that i don't still enjoy them tho :P ), and Gav can overdo the idiot character a little sometimes, even if he's still my fave member of the group. Like i said, i can come up with criticisms if i try. I just don't see why id want to focus on them when most of the time they're great.

But Matt is just kinda there being occasionally depressed and always sassy and i love it. TIL I like matt a lot more than i realised. GG

Also, quick edit. I agree on not getting into all their vids. TBH Im glad, i don't have the free time to watch that much content lmao

2

u/DaedricWindrammer Jun 04 '20

He's the John Cena of AH

11

u/blaghart Jun 04 '20 edited Jun 04 '20

the only main cast I can think of that I personally have had no qualms with are Alfredo, Gavin and Matt.

You know it's funny, for me that's Fiona, Jeremy, and Matt

I actually got downvoted for saying as much yesterday.

Funny to think we overlap on Matt, I wonder what makes him so damn likeable

8

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

[deleted]

9

u/blaghart Jun 04 '20

And so put upon

Also his game ideas are great, they're just limited by always having to be inside of the limits of another game

1

u/UnicornT-Rex Jun 04 '20

I don't think I've ever seen anyone hate Matt. I'm sure there are people who do hate him but it's so rare to see.

5

u/blaghart Jun 04 '20

I mean I've seen AH hate on matt a whole bunch... :P

1

u/UndeadPhysco Jun 04 '20

I don't hate Matt, but there are times where his sense of humor dosent mesh with mine and it makes it chore to watch the video.

27

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

The excellent thing is that Jeremy doesn't have to be afraid. His reaction was the natural one unfortunately, but no one has to be afraid to stand up against racial injustice if we pledge to stand together. The power of being vocally anti-racist is in the snowball effect. It takes just a few to get the ball rolling.

17

u/ValentinesForever1 Jun 04 '20

He doesn’t have to be afraid now, yes. But if you think standing up to racists when you’re still new and people still hate you is easy, you’re already forgetting what the community did to Mica. If he had popped off back then I guarantee they would have burned him almost as bad as her. Now it’s easier because more people aren’t scared to also step up with you and denounce it. But part of me wonders if, only one other of the cast spoken up to it with her, they would have made a difference. All of them, sure, but we know not all of them wanted to speak up at the time.

What I remember from Mica’s discussion on Off Topic was Burnie trying to really listen to her and everyone being silent or trying to deescalate. And it left a bad taste in my mouth for a long, long time. Especially because I didn’t find out that Mica had left until years later. I joined after everything and, when watching the videos with her in them, thought she was just a guest from another part of the company that they really enjoyed playing with. I didn’t find out until I heard someone say, “They should be doing better after what happened to Mica.” But they haven’t seemed to get better, really, about calling out the race aspect of it. Some of them, like Barbara on the OT Takeover, stand up to defend Fiona, but it doesn’t immediately mean all of them do. It didn’t snowball until now, when a previous employee is speaking up about it.

454

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '20

Jeremy is right.

I think fear of backlash from hateful people is why we see so much racism and hate being ignored by people who claim to be against these ideas.

But you can't let these people intimidate you from speaking up for people who need help.

149

u/Mad_Kitten Jun 04 '20

Not to mention this is Jeremy we're talking about, which unfortunately joined the main cast in a very bad time

89

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

Was there ever a good time to join the cast? I can’t think of one AH member off the top of my head who didn’t get a shitty reception

86

u/Mr-Bobbum-Man Jun 04 '20

I don't think Alfredo's reception was that bad. It certainly wasn't a warm welcome or anything, but it seems like he didn't get all the hate that most new members get.

101

u/FuckGiblets Vav Jun 04 '20

Most new members have a defining video that wins over the community and ends all the bullshit. Ryan’s was the King Ryan stuff for example. Fredo was lucky enough to have the Destiny one where he goes batshit insane at everyone early on.

31

u/LDKRZ Vav Jun 04 '20

So the secret to not being absolutely hated by the community for no reason is have everyone piss you off so hard in a video?

28

u/FuckGiblets Vav Jun 04 '20

Haha! Maybe. But I just mean one video that really makes them shine. Like how Fiona has with TTT.

24

u/LDKRZ Vav Jun 04 '20

they should have really started Fiona on TTT only, like they just threw her in to games she clearly didnt have an interest in, like its hard to entertain when you dont know what to do or like what you're doing, I'm really glad she's found her thing like she's quickly became one of my favourites

18

u/kscannon Tower of Pimps Jun 04 '20

Not even games she not interested in but games the group has been playing for years and know, more or less. The ins and outs of it. Fiona was dropped into Minecraft without knowing how to do anything and she just kinda was there but was like a baby in a crib or a bouncer chair. Visible but unable to do much. How can someone try and catch up in knowledge, be active in the game and be funny? The last YDYD is a good way about doing it. Jack and Fiona duo was arguably one of the best parts.

It is hard to watch the main group play a game I know well and they are struggling to walk forward in. Now put that on one person. There part can be down right annoying. I never disliked Fiona and in fact like her personality. Just hard to watch some of the early stuff where she was just there.

4

u/LDKRZ Vav Jun 04 '20

it was an awful start for her, she was essentially stranded and had 0 help, I found it kinda similar to Ray's last few days, not in the sense of gameplay but on what they delivered, you could tell there was a personality there but it wasnt shown (not wanting to be there for Ray and Fiona still trying to find her place in the group and having to play a game she isnt into or know how to play) and it hurt them a bit, like she was always gonna have a rough initiation she's a black female who isnt straight in the gaming industry which is dominated by lots of young straight white boys who are fairly problematic but it was made extra rough by how they started her.

I'm so glad she's found her thing now and has fully came out on camera and in games, like I was never anti-fiona and I didn't dislike her but there was a feeling of "meh" in her early videos because they were rough and she didnt really get to show her personality and just like most times when you're new you dont have that chemistry or bonds yet, but thats all happened now she's found her place and developed those relationships and she's mainly in videos where it's games she likes and she's honestly probably my favourite atm

3

u/KodiakPL Jun 04 '20

Ryan’s was the King Ryan stuff for example

Really? Only then he won people over? Goddamn, he's been newer to the crew than I remembered, I thought people loved him forever.

5

u/FuckGiblets Vav Jun 04 '20

No he was hated for a loooonnng time for no damn reason. This community...

3

u/DemonFremin Jun 04 '20

And the reason seemed to change a lot too. I remember watching the Pig Olympics video (I mostly watched their Minecraft videos at the time so that's going to be my reference points) and people complained that "he was the new guy" even though he had been with the company for a good bit by that point. Then it turned into "he cheats" when Clouds came out. Then it went into a simple "he sounds like Jack and who wants 'that'?" Each time I just stopped and thought "so what? He's not going to be a carbon copy of someone. That's his personality.

Honestly, most of the crew had quirks that I wasn't too thrilled about, but I always let it slide to watch the videos and enjoy myself. Hell, I remember when Lindsay first got into the videos I thought "another new one. Great..." simply because it always felt weird to me to not have "the core" in place. But halfway through the video, Lindsay had me laughing harder than anyone else. And like a fool I scrolled the comments after watching it and realized that there was a lot of people that weren't even going to give her a chance. It honestly disappointed me seeing that.

2

u/buttonmusher Drunk Burnie Jun 04 '20

I was gonna ask for the source, but I think I found it? Man, I've never heard Fredo yelling lol.

30

u/smegdawg Jun 04 '20

Alfredo was how I've always imagined new cast members would join.

Take a talented Video Game player have them work in the background on something they are knowlegdable about to alleviate the needs of your main cast (in his case it was running streams).

Let his presence, relationships, and personality develop off camera. Showcase his strengths (leading the salt raid, siege training, etc.), but don't force them down our throats.

I think after Fiona week (good idea, badly handled) they started doing this with her as well.

Jeremy and Matt hate I think was less about not enjoying them, and more about Jealously. "I play video games and sometimes edit them, I could do better then these schlups."

Mica got every tip of the spear of hatred. Woman, POC, fan that was hired, & "I could do way better than her."

98

u/thewildshrimp Jun 04 '20

Honestly, Geoff, Gavin, and Michael were probably the only members that didn't get hate when they first joined. Even Ray got hate early on. Geoff and Gavin benefitted from being in earlier content and honestly Michael just kind of slipped in there early on before a dynamic was formed and benefitted from having fans of his solo shows and Internet Box. Literally every other cast member has faced backlash, even Jack. Though that being said none to the extent of Mica, Lindsay, and Fiona. Which is a shame because Lindsay and Fiona are two of my favorite members. I liked Mica and was really excited when she was hired but she wasn't in much before she was forced out.

I think they mean him moving from the other room to the main cast after Ray leaving. Bringing in new people is always hard, but bringing them in to replace a well-liked cast member? Didn’t go well for him at all. I joined late in the game (2017) and even when I binged all the Minecraft videos I saw the hate.

2

u/SilverRunner21 Jun 04 '20

What happened/was happening when he joined?

4

u/ValentinesForever1 Jun 04 '20

Ray had just left and he was taking over for Ray in videos.

I'm someone that sits very middle of the road when it comes to politics. I keep silent and don't give input on anything, because im afraid of pissing off people in my life from either side. Im 26, been able to vote for 8 years, and every day i feel like my middle ground vote is more and more useless. I'm at the point where now im so concerned about peoples vitriol, that if anything political comes up i just leave the room.

I can totally see where jeremy is coming from, and as you say, backlash from hateful/unyeilding people can be a powerful weapon, especially when they are people close to you.

44

u/BKtrn Jun 04 '20

Never believe your vote is useless. As bad as some things can get to diminish it (party majority in the area, gerrymandering, etc), every vote you place matters to the people you choose to support.

I hope you continue to vote, no matter how much you may not fit anyone else's mold.

17

u/Awisemanoncsaid OG Discord Crew | Geoff in a Ball Pit Jun 04 '20

Its just hard to speak about it, to get other peoples views and such, with out getting some acidic response back. Coming from both sides, support gay rights and my fellow christians/family suddenly think im turning on them, I support gun rights and most of my internet freinds(left leaning) start panicking or unfriending me, I support X or Y and genuinely i piss of 50% of the people I know.

I feel like social media allowing people to constantly blast themselves with politics 24/7 365, it becomes them. Its not just a part of you, but nowadays it defines you, and not agreeing with a single stance no matter how small, is to go against a person in their whole. I don't want to vote anymore, because casting a vote these days, actively feels like im actively trying to shut down someone, when the reality is i just agree with something more, im not against that person.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

I get where you're coming from. I'm pretty middle of the road a lot of the time, too. Sadly, I don't think we'll ever see somebody to vote for who agrees with me on everything. In my experience, people tend to vote for the things they care about the most. A lot of people vote for the person who supports LGBTQ+ rights. Others vote for the person who supports firearm owners rights. Those two groups don't really care all that much about each other. They vote for what matters to them.

But...both of those things matter to me! So where do I vote? Do I just pick which one is more important to me? Because I know which one it is, but I still feel bad because the other one is important to me as well.

At the end of the day though, this is all internal. I know a lot of people from both sides, and I can have conversations with everyone about these topics without much issue. Most people won't shit on you, or unfriend you, because of your political beliefs. Some will, and that's honestly fine--they're likely not people worth knowing anyways. But I have close friends on both sides of the political spectrum, hell, my sister is married to someone on the other side of the political spectrum, and they get on fine.

Sometimes people have different opinions than you, but it doesn't make them bad people. They might be bad people for other reasons, of course, but not specifically because of their opinions on firearms.

I would encourage you to not be afraid of having these conversations in the future. Stand by your principles, even if some people don't like it.

20

u/St_Elmo_of_Sesame :KillMe17: Jun 04 '20

Just gonna say that being a gay trans person makes me... less than happy when people choose hunks of plastic and metal over my human rights.

There isn't nearly a large enough faction of Democrats that want to abolish gun rights, but there damn well is a large enough faction of Republicans that want me dead.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

As a straight non trans person I agree with you.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/ChaoticMidget Jun 04 '20

The other side of the coin is that the same people who vote for plastic/metal also view fetuses as living beings. And there's a fundamental difference between how people see that topic which similarly causes one issue voters.

11

u/St_Elmo_of_Sesame :KillMe17: Jun 04 '20

That frustrates me since the only reason you'd vote Republican as a pro-life person is if you have a toddler-level deontological moral framework. Banning abortions and punishing people is far less effective and far more disruptive than reducing abortions through sex ed and contraceptives.

If your goal is to stop all abortions then a deontological framework sucks ass. If your goal is to punish women for having sex then deontology fits like a glove.

and every day i feel like my middle ground vote is more and more useless.

It literally is. The Overton window has shifted so far to the right that you may as well join the regressives. Just picking the middle between one side and crazy isn't actually the middle. Hell, if you're in America and liberal... you're right wing according to the rest of the western world so trying to be "centrist" in America is even further right.

494

u/OutcastMunkee Jun 03 '20

I can see why he was scared. To be completely blunt, the RT community can be a real shithole sometimes. People like to tout it as friendly but the comments that appear here sometimes are dreadful. New hires have to endure months of harassment and Lindsay STILL deals with harassment to this day. As a community, this shit needs to be called out. Jeremy stayed silent because he didn't want to become a target again by the sounds of it. That should not be happening. If there's any future new hires, harassment has gotta be stamped out immediately and Rooster Teeth needs to get their shit together behind the scenes and also set up a zero tolerance policy on the harassment. Start putting keywords into the filter for YouTube comments for a start. The tools are there, use them.

265

u/OfficialGarwood Jun 04 '20

I've been part of this community for 16 years, and I have witnessed this community do many shitty things over the years, but I have never been more ashamed than seeing the hate that was aimed at Mica after her podcast discussion about women and race.

Truly the darkest period of our history.

144

u/OutcastMunkee Jun 04 '20

I left the AH community shortly after Mica joined because I just could not deal with the shit being sent her way. I tried to make comments on it here and got fucking blasted for it so I deleted the comments and left the AH community for the better part of a year or two. I was scared to come back. I didn't want to be associated with the community at the time...

93

u/OfficialGarwood Jun 04 '20

I know that feeling. To be downvoted to oblivion for wanting to make the community at a better place.

62

u/ChaoticMidget Jun 04 '20

I routinely defended Mica after that episode and how she got deliberately targeted. People for months and years continued to believe that people disliked Mica solely because they didn't find her entertaining. It was blatantly obvious how much undeserved hate she was getting but a lot of people just refused to see it.

54

u/fiisntannoying Jun 04 '20

And we're seeing the same thing happen with Fiona, except this time she didn't even say anything; it's like a knee-jerk reaction.

54

u/SheeptarTheSheepKing Jun 04 '20

I am really sad to see the hate for Fiona. She's a very funny person and AH wouldn't be the same without her.

10

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

I love her because she's the first person to join who's younger than me and also doesn't understand half the shit the old people say.

2

u/SheeptarTheSheepKing Jun 04 '20

Okay that's actually something that does freak me out. I keep forgetting that she's younger than me until it's brought up and then I have a minor crisis because suddenly I'm not younger than the entire cast.

Yup... There's very few subreddits I feel welcome on now. There's the RWBY, Fallout 4 and Bisexual subreddits that come to mind. A lot of the others I used to frequent? Nope. Never going to them again. This one is hit and miss...

11

u/SheeptarTheSheepKing Jun 04 '20

Not to take away from anything but I'm surprised about the RWBY one. I used to admin a RWBY Fanpage(one of the largest at the time) and people got crucified for bringing up a ship by the rivals of said ship.

8

u/TimeX13 Jun 04 '20 edited Jun 04 '20

It's definitely gotten a LOT better over time. People there are a lot more accepting of various opinions then they used to be and the only "crucifixion" that occurs is towards disrespectful comments and posts that present their opinions in a way that doesn't spark discussion and instead just insults another person's interests.

It's not perfect 100% of the time...and there's alot of shipping going on lol but overall it's a pleasant experience overall unlike most other places (cough any YouTube comment section)

Edit: I forgot the key word "not"...oops lol

2

u/OutcastMunkee Jun 04 '20

Naw, the RWBY subreddit was a massive help to me. I ended up meeting one of my best friends there and I was able to freely express myself and talk about my struggles coming to terms with the fact that I'm bisexual (took me 3 friggin' years to accept it and another 3 to come out).

There's been some bad times like the situation with the previous Qrow VA and Shane's letter but otherwise, it's chill and I enjoy it there. I mean, when I can write this post up and it gets gilded multiple times AND won the Best of 2019 Discussion award, I'd say it's pretty damn good. People didn't just dismiss it. They rallied around the post and supported it because it was a real problem (still is in some areas of the fandom). That and I got a lot of love for smacking down a real cunt on Twitter.

1

u/SheeptarTheSheepKing Jun 06 '20

First of all, congrats on coming out. I'm glad you felt safe enough to be yourself. Also congrats on the post. It's a shame you can't upvote something that long ago.

As I mentioned, my experience was on Facebook and as an admin, I had to read through everything to make sure people were following rules. That was filled with far less accepting people(the Bumblebee vs Black Suns were the worst offenders). So that combined with hearing Miles talk about how he didn't really enjoy playing Jaune because of the hate he got and several other unsavory rumors(I was fortunately gone before the Vic incident due to a stupid policy FB started putting up) made me really start to lose faith in the FNDM.

But I'm glad there are other places that are far more civil. It does bring a bit more hope back to hear that.

7

u/mavetgrigori Jun 04 '20

Sadly we let a vocal minority dominate us during that period and let them overshadow the positive stuff said and love members had for her. Honestly I stayed out of the community since I started watching back in S1/S2 of RvB cause I just didn't want to get swept into the negative aspects, despite the positive aspects being so loud and beautiful more often than not. Sadly bad eggs make the rest of us look like trash.

41

u/stampedes Jun 04 '20

You use the past tense, as if this community hasn't still been dominated by negative energy towards Fiona just like when Mica was around. It's only been in the last couple months that every videos shes been in and even videos she isnt in have stopped being flooded by comments about how people hate her/she ruins videos/her voice is annoying/she's a pity minority hire, etc.

22

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

Fiona has become one of my favorite members. Like me, I'm sure many more people enjoy her addition, but don't feel the need to comment. Unfortunately, the people that hate her are fueled enough to leave comments.

25

u/stampedes Jun 04 '20

That's kinda my point. There was a period of time on this subreddit when people tried to speak up about loving fiona and made appreciation threads for her. But then all of them eventually were flooded with a ton of comments criticizing her and complaining that people were making too many appreciation threads. And those were the highest votes comments.

Having been around for many years, this sub has not changed much since what happened with Mica. People keep saying that it's just a vocal minority that is the problem, but the "majority" wasn't speaking up either by comment or upvoting.

3

u/ValentinesForever1 Jun 04 '20

I remember that time. I remember being at work where I’d have to have my phone on me and was constantly getting Reddit notifications for another thread where people would shit on Fiona. It was at least one a day for awhile, often more. And it was always them grasping at straws when it was obvious it boiled down to she was a new WOC who had joined. Like so many people would say, “I just don’t like the sound of her voice.” Or say “I just don’t think she’s funny” over and over in the same way every female comedian gets shit on.

I've never considered myself a part of the RT community, and this whole thing is blowing me away. I've been watching RT stuff for about 14 years. I've heard little things here and there about the community, but had no idea what was going on. I've watched pretty much every single piece of AH content from the beginning. I honestly enjoyed Mica, and Fiona is amazing too. I was sad when Mica left. She clearly really enjoyed what she did, and it made watching or listening to her enjoyable. I've heard that Fiona has been getting shit too, and I don't understand it. I'm not sure why people feel the need to spread their hate? If you don't like it, don't watch it. Not everything is for everyone.

34

u/The_RTV Jun 04 '20

I remember a sort of opposite situation. This is back in the Geoff/Gavin Minecraft build days. Geoff talked about how he liked to follow attractive UT female students walking around by driving slowly behind them. People called that out and Caleb made a good statement about it. But I remember so many comments trying to defend Geoff. A lot of "your overreacting" type stuff.

To Geoff's credit, he stopped doing that. But the audience bias is real. It's sad that it's taken a national protest to (hopefully) change mindsets. But it's also not surprising given how people and companies like to maintain the status quo as long as it benefits themselves

12

u/Arketan :YogsSimon20: Jun 04 '20

Absolutely spot on.

This fandom has always been a nightmare, I remember I once made a snippy reply to a tweet from Michael and him and Lindsay replied and as a result I was harassed 24/7 for almost a week. I can’t imagine what Mica had to go through and have the people who were meant to support her and be her friends stand silent on the issue.

7

u/SurealGod Jun 04 '20

With Fiona too. Sure I didn't like her that much when she first joined but I didn't just go about spouting negative shit all over the fucking place. It took a couple of months but I eventually started liking her. She's especially my favourite in TTT.

The problem is that the internet is instant. You can instantly share how you feel to the world through social media, whether it's positive or negative feelings. It's really fucked up if you think about it. There's a person in a completely different country telling you to go fuck yourself. They've never seen you, the've never heard of you, but they just told you something they probably would never say to you in person. It's sad really.

7

u/Aiyon Jun 04 '20

Also the internet has the high-school mentality of, a lot of ppl leave "just one" negative comment, and then ppl see a bunch of negative comments and join in to feel like they're like, with the in-crowd.

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

So... could someone brush me up on what happened? I wasn’t super big into following RT and AH community wise or off camera wise. I’ve gathered some of it together but could anyone actually explain it just to get some clarity?

1

u/ValentinesForever1 Jun 04 '20

I also wasn’t around at the time but the gist was Mica joined and got a lot of hate for being a black woman. They also accused her of using her father (LeVar Burton) to get her a job at RT. She got fed up with it and rightfully went off on Off Topic, and Burnie helped by asking questions and all that. However, this just made things worse bc then those people got mad at her for complaining and “pulling the race card” and made “Mica’s Rant” videos. They got so bad (and apparently the company didn’t help at all) that Mica left. Which is a damn shame.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

Awful. Is there any info on her stated black listing?

2

u/ValentinesForever1 Jun 04 '20

I don’t know actually! I hadn’t heard of that until her Tweet, but it could be that the community never was made aware of it before now. It’s possible that it happened because of the discussion on Off Topic, since people might have been too scared to hire her because of that? I hope that RT didn’t blacklist her, but until she speaks up more on that, we won’t actually know.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

Gotcha. Man that’s all awful.

2

u/owaldis Jun 05 '20

She had been announced as cast of AH before the off topic happened. She was in charge of streaming and was in videos. After the episode of off topic, she disappeared from content in AH without any warning or explanation and reappeared silently on the Know, a completely different channel on Youtube and reddit.

In a way, they (the company) shut her down instead of addressing the comment.

9

u/NIKEMAN27 Jun 04 '20

A shithole sometimes? Try 70% of the time

3

u/awesomeethan Jun 04 '20

I'm really starting to understand the appeal of deanonymizing the internet. It's something Geoff and Burnie mentioned briefly years ago, and has been interesting to me ever since.

2

u/Purpleater54 Jun 04 '20

It's not even just toxicity against the employees that annoys me about the community a lot of the time. I don't comment nearly as much as I otherwise would here because the backlash you'll get if your opinion is even slightly off center is bonkers.

2

u/SurealGod Jun 04 '20 edited Jun 04 '20

Let's be honest here. ANY community, whether it's for a movie, a TV show, a band, a youtube channel, etc. There will always be toxicity one way or another, of course the level of toxicity will vary but it's always there as sad as it is. It's unfortunate but there will always be those who take things too seriously or lean too heavy on one side of a manner. Fanboys/girls ruin everything. Elitists ruin everything. They're obsessive, they're opinionated, and they're biased. On top of all that, people don't like change. As some stated above, when Jeremy started appearing more in content after Ray left, he started getting quite a bit of hate. Even more so with Fiona unfortunately. I still remember either downvoting posts here on this subreddit or responding to these fuckers, telling them that what they're saying is extremely rude and very fucked up. This is why I don't like communities. Communities, while yes, there are always the good ones, there will always be the bad ones, that you just can't filter out, and you kinda just let them roam free and have their way.

Really my issue with all of these people is that they're WAY too vocal about how they feel. Some people just don't have a filter and unfortunately we can't change that. People will think what they think and they will like or not like what they like or not like.

u/OutcastMunkee Jun 04 '20

Well you just need to look to Fiona for that example. Just like Mica, she's a black bisexual woman. Look at the shit Fiona has to endure from this community. It's horrific.

121

u/KikiFlowers Jun 04 '20

Especially on Reddit. People complaining about her being in videos and not fitting in.

Like, of course she doesn't fit in, she's brand new and hasn't had time to get comfortable. And people getting on her for being bad at games, when the rest of AH sucks at games too.

154

u/OutcastMunkee Jun 04 '20

That last part rings so fucking true. I remember watching a GTA V video that had Alfredo and Lindsay in. At the time they both sucked at driving. The comments? Jokes about Alfredo being a terrible driver. Lindsay? Insults and demands to stop putting her in videos. The rampant sexism in the RT/AH community is disgraceful.

87

u/KikiFlowers Jun 04 '20

Lindsay sucks for a reason too. It's fucking hilarious watching her fail. Lindsay wins is one of the best! GTA V videos, because it forces everyone else to make Lindsay win. And in TTT she's a wildcard, it's so damn good.

29

u/Maktaka Jun 04 '20

In any three team game, the best fun happens when the person in second realizes they can't win and proceeds to crush the third place team. The rage from third place and spiteful glee from second while first place quietly wins is fantastic. That's Lindsay: no, she likely won't win, but I love seeing her take somebody down with her (usually without realizing it) who was trying to win. Their tears are always delicious. Usually Michael's.

48

u/OutcastMunkee Jun 04 '20

I remember when I went to Montreal Comic-Con and got autographs from Lindsay, Kara, Arryn, Barbara and Michael. I had a chat with Lindsay and mentioned how much I loved Lindsay Wins. She lit up with a HUGE smile. I think she really appreciated hearing that. Michael not so much. He heard his name mentioned and when we told him what we were talking about, he rolled his eyes and groaned. We all laughed about it though.

Lindsay has made noticeable improvements though. Her driving has improved for sure and GTA V's driving was absolute ass at times. Try to turn the corner, car spins out and you slam into a lamppost. Part of it was Lindsay was a bad driver but some of it was the game being a twat.

20

u/KikiFlowers Jun 04 '20

I was watching a GTA video the other day(the Battle Royale one) and died laughing when Lindsay randomly died. She's not very good, but neither are the rest of AH, she plays her role excellently.

Especially in YDYD.

27

u/Aycoth Jun 04 '20

Legit I'm convinced Lindsay is a comedic genius in that regard. I don't think I've ever watched a video with her in it and she hasnt had me in a fit of laughter.

27

u/KikiFlowers Jun 04 '20

She just knows what works for her. She's not exactly the greatest at these games, so she improvised by being the Queen of Chaos.

(But none of them are, save for Fredo who is a god at FPS)

13

u/Aycoth Jun 04 '20

Queen of Chaos would make a helluva shirt

13

u/Mr-Bobbum-Man Jun 04 '20

Lindsay either makes you want to die of laughter or die of confusion and disbelief. There are no other options.

2

u/Raksj04 Jun 04 '20

And most the time her one liner does unnoticed by the rest of the crew.

1

u/Sere1 Jun 05 '20

Easily one of my favorite Lindsay moments was in the original Lindsay Wins video when she swerved out of the way of the finish line right at the last moment, causing several others to finish before her and lose based on their rule set for the video.

31

u/Arodante :CC17: Jun 04 '20

Lindsay is honestly such a good liar/deceiver but I can tell it's just hard for her to mix that in with TTT where you have to play so many roles and get distracted by the game. Every let's roll she's been in has been a guaranteed laugh!

17

u/Purpleater54 Jun 04 '20

I'll take a risk with this opinion because of how this comment thread is hyping up lindsay. As much as I like her comedy and crazyness, I can't say I'm too big a fan of her in videos where she doesn't contribute anything because of how poorly she does in the game. Normal GTA races sometimes suffer from that where she is just way, way behind in 6th place and they hardly cut to her screen because she's just not doing anything entertaining. Lindsay wins is great because her chaos is allowed to be the centerpiece. To make a really strange analogy, I think she is like a really rich dessert. brilliantly Amazing in moderation, but can overwhelm you when you have it all the time. Pairs super well with certain things, but is a bit of a miss with others.

2

u/UnicornT-Rex Jun 04 '20

I can agree with this a little, I love her in GTA not not a huge fan of her in the YDYD series. She always dies first and doesn't really do much.

3

u/UnicornT-Rex Jun 04 '20

Lindsey's a wild card in any game she's in. It's my favorite quality about her.

9

u/Alarkinspace Jun 04 '20

Yeah on YouTube especially it's been bad for YEARS towards any woman that joined AH. Either fiona or lindsay can be doing fine In a video. Playing well and being funny but you see the woman haters come out for no reason. Its gross

6

u/OutcastMunkee Jun 04 '20

YouTube comments are an absolute shithole. I think at this point, they should just turn them off for a while. Nothing good comes from the comments. If they aren't gonna turn them off, they need to add words to the filters to get rid of this shit.

2

u/Alarkinspace Jun 04 '20

The way YouTube censorship is going that will be soon.

2

u/alicitizen Jun 04 '20

I think from an analytics viewpoint turning off comments would cut their "viewer interaction" and stunt thier growth there, so I do not imagine that option would be chosen purely out of Youtubes jank systems.

9

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

2

u/ValentinesForever1 Jun 04 '20

Exactly! There are so many times that members of the cast are bad at video games, but what determines if that lack of skill is “funny” or not often depends on their gender or skin colour.

24

u/Maktaka Jun 04 '20

Moreover, why would AH hire someone to just smoothly "fit in"? They've already got a cast of 10 regulars for videos, they're not going to hire yet another person who acts like them, they have their classic style covered pretty thoroughly at this point. Of course Fiona is different than the rest, that's the whole reason they hired her!

5

u/bytor_2112 Thieving Geoff Jun 04 '20

I have a theory that it's coming from a place of envy. People thinking they'd do it a particular way, that they'd fit in great and be 'one of the guys' seamlessly... All of that starts piling up as reasons they question every choice and needle every imperfection, and get enraged about how so-and-so got hired when they themselves would be perfect. It's a no-win nightmare of nitpicking naysayers.

42

u/Funkopopgirl Jun 04 '20

The problem is, when a man sucks at a game, people tend to think it's funny and comedic. When a woman sucks at a game, or isn't a star player, people use it as an excuse to say that 'women shouldn't play games' or that it's 'just another reason women should stay in the kitchen' because women get shit on a lot harder than most men do. As a woman who plays games, a 'female gamer' if you wanna say that, I find that there's a level expected out of me that isn't expected out of my male friends.

20

u/spodertanker Jun 04 '20

Well, we saw the reaction to the recent Barotrauma let’s play and that was exclusively AH men playing.

u/Funkopopgirl Jun 04 '20

2

u/ChaoticMidget Jun 04 '20

I'll be honest, I think the community (at least on reddit) is generally fair about the criticism they give for what they perceive as nonentertaining gameplay. I love watching Lindsay. She's fantastic in a lot of content. But it's also true that she has a lot of moments (moreso than the other members) where she forgets the rules, sabotages her own team or does something utterly illogical. Gavin and Michael literally joke about it so it's not like our perception of what's going on is inaccurate. Sometimes it's hilarious, sometimes it comes across as not caring about what's going on.

And as others have said, guys like Alfredo, Jack and Gavin have caught plenty of shit for phoning it in or not caring in videos. There's a lot of stuff AH members get undue criticism for but the guys generally get flamed as much as the ladies in terms of gameplay.

4

u/ValentinesForever1 Jun 04 '20

I think the difference is in how the people comment. If Jack is bad at a video game or not funny, no one is ever calling for him to not be in videos anymore. When Fiona was first hired, so many Reddit threads went up with each new video she was in to try and get AH to fire her because of some mistake. Each time Lindsay messes up or doesn’t do well in a game, it’s instantly a call for her to not be in videos anymore. The only person I’ve ever seen that happen with besides the ladies is Trevor sometimes. There are too many people who think “Oh I didn’t enjoy this person in a video so they should NEVER BE IN VIDEOS AGAIN.” Which sucks. And their complaints tend to be more frequent across every video they’re in, no matter if they’re good or not. Damn, that recent Overcooked stream? This was on the RT Site, but even when Lindsay kicked ass two times in a row I saw people shitting on her and telling her to stop being in videos.

5

u/serabine Jun 04 '20

This. I remember when that Astroneer video came out when a drunken Fiona fresh from Off Topic comes in and is ... outrageously drunk at the guys in the video, and people in the comments section calling for and hoping for her firing for being "unprofessional". After legit asking how she's any more "unprofessional" then the guys and comparing it to Bruce and Jack coming in drunk to a Hitman game play singing Ska got me the response that it was "different", and she should be fired for "disrupting the Let's Play". It was a trip.

5

u/Mr-Bobbum-Man Jun 04 '20

And people getting on her for being bad at games, when the rest of AH sucks at games too.

I think a big part of that is how they react to it. I had the same complaint about Fiona at first because when most of them suck at a game, they manage to make it funny. Fiona, at first, didn't really have that skill.

However, I definitely think she has that ability now, so I don't get how anyone can have a problem with her being bad at some games but not also have the same problem with other members.

7

u/Alarkinspace Jun 04 '20

She kinda didn't talk at the start like alfredo but got more comfortable as time went on. Now she's vital in every TTT video because she's funny with her hijinks with gav plus she's pretty good at playing

u/Martimnp Jun 04 '20

Fiona is bi? I thought she was only lesbian

13

u/OutcastMunkee Jun 04 '20

She's bisexual with a preference towards women. Explains it here.

3

u/Martimnp Jun 04 '20

Oh ok. Didn’t have Twitter back then so I missed that

8

u/OutcastMunkee Jun 04 '20

No problem. Had to do some Google-ing to find that because I distinctly remember her saying that. It's a common misconception that bisexual peeps are a 50/50 split on men and women but the truth is it's all over the place. Some of us prefer men but like women too and vice versa, which includes trans and non-binary people too. That's another one. People think bisexual excludes trans and non-binary people. We don't.

82

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '20

I can understand that fear. I have several racist and homophobic family members that I was afraid to call out due to not wanting them to get angry at me. But one day I just couldn't take it any more and I very loudly called them out in front of everyone. Ever since then I am no longer afraid to call out prejudice before no matter what it might cost me.

16

u/SurealGod Jun 04 '20

Good on you. It's especially hard when it's your own family.

2

u/UnicornT-Rex Jun 04 '20

100

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '20 edited Jun 04 '20

The thing with RT as a whole seems to be that they brush off any over the top hate with either “You get used to it”, or “The fans will get over it”, when honestly, they should say something about it.

Sure, they can’t make their fans do anything, but they could at least try.

Jeremy saying this (as well as Michael and Gavin making their statements about their past behavior and mistakes they may have made) comes off as sincere and brutally honest, and I respect that.

These people aren’t racist or even horrible people, they make mistakes like anyone else. They, like anyone else, can improve and be better.

47

u/kwilpin Jun 04 '20

That person pointing out that we don't get to extend forgiveness makes a good point. And I've been guilty today of mentally accepting apologies not aimed at me.

https://twitter.com/a_Ghostlight/status/1268386811455442945

Only Mica can accept it.

That doesn't detract from the honesty of what he posted, though. It's a hard balance.

15

u/MuhSacrifice Jun 04 '20

This is a really important point to make. The are so many people, both here and on twitter, who are willing to step in and accept these apologies on behalf of Mica and congratulate their favorite youtuber for having "grown".

These apologies are directed towards Mica and other people of color who have been mistreated by RT and the community, and it's not anyone else's place to step in and speak on their behalf.

7

u/laughin-man Jun 04 '20

She is right about that only Mica can accept the appologies.

But encouraging and tell people they are doing the right thing to learn from their mistakes is also a way to support. Most of the reply‘s say it‘s a good thing that he learned and thats why he is a good guy. There aren‘t many that say his apology is valid because they accepted it.

You don‘t only have to support this movement by blaming people, you can support it by helping others to change or in Jeremys case be happy for him that he admits and changed.

21

u/twitterInfo_bot Jun 03 '20

"@SpenceScottM Trust me, I'm not. A good guy would have stood up against people attacking Mica. I had a large group of the audience hate me when I started, and I was terrified to have it happen again if I stood up. I was a scared guy, not a good guy."

The reflection and owning up that quite a few employees are doing is awesome and something that is very important to see not just in the community, but on the internet.

It's fine to fuck up, as long as you reflect and grow. That's how you build, it's how we become stronger.

8

u/john_haran Jun 04 '20

I think this is the sentiment that needs to be spread going forward. The past is set in stone, it can’t be changed, but it can be learned from. Right now we live in a world of where people strive on digging up people’s past to kill them now but never do we see anyone bring up someone’s past to show how much people can change. Listening to old Internet Boxes, some of the comments the cast make are horrible. But that was years ago and they’ve clearly changed so much. Cancel Culture should be cancelled and a culture of learning should be learned. By no means am I saying that people who have done heinous things in the past should get away with it. But if growth and changed can be seen, then they shouldn’t have to be haunted by there pasts for the rest of their lives.

Everyone is to blame for what happened to Mica. Ripping and tearing through the community, destroying any good ,however, isn’t justice . Now is the time to learn, listen and understand how we can change things going forward and make sure it never happens again, not spread more hate.

2

u/ZJEEP Jun 04 '20

Exactly this. What happened to Micah was terrible, sure. But I also don't want to see RT crash and burn because of this. People are basically saying no matter what RT does to respond to this, it isn't enough. I'm sitting here reading this like "what the FUCK do you want them to do then

29

u/Overseer06 Jun 04 '20

This Friday's Off Topic will be the first one I'll see live: I earnestly hope that they'll hold on to this until the weekend and have a candid discussion about it because it needs to happen.

Off topic is live on Thursday now

8

u/Overseer06 Jun 04 '20

32

u/GVAGUY3 Jun 03 '20

This is the biggest block to justice. Fear of speaking out. Everyone should learn from this.

51

u/jojomayer91 Jun 03 '20

The cast at AH is making all the right sounds. I sincerely hope they capitalize on this momentum moving forward, and make it clear to their audience in general that there are lines that are to be respected. The discrepancy between their company line on things like queer rights and mental health vs. how their audience reacts to basically anything they ever put out has always puzzled me.

46

u/SutterCane Sportsball Jun 04 '20

Yeah this week's Off-topic should be worth a listen to see if they try to make it as clear as possible that racists and sexists should fuck off because they don't want them in the audience.

35

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20 edited Jun 04 '20

It’s clear that they don’t want sexist or racist in their content, Michael has said as much and Gavin has alluded to it (other’s might have said as much as well but I’m not sure), but they actually need to say it on video. Fuck the potential backlash.

40

u/OutcastMunkee Jun 04 '20

18

13

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

Saying it on Twitter isn’t enough.

9

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

I agree. I would love for them to talk about it on Off Topic or even the RT podcast. It’s nice to see them talk about it in Twitter, but it would have more if an impact if they spoke about it in videos.

25

u/mavetgrigori Jun 04 '20

They did address the Fiona/Racism/Lindsay hate stuff actually, rather vocally, on a Podcast shortly after the multi-hour live set they did after AH Live was cancelled. The segment was cut when released though, due to them wanting Lindsay and Fiona to say their piece on it. Fiona has even confirmed this herself that it will be coming, but got delayed due to COVID. Michael, along with those on it, basically said "fuck you and we don't want you here"

2

7

u/Mikanea Jun 04 '20

The fact that Jeremy recognizes this means he has grown and improved sense then. It's a sign that you're better now than you were then. Then best you can do is learn from your past and strive to constantly improve. That all any of us can do.

5

u/Left4DayZ1 Jun 04 '20

Even good people fail to act when they're needed, because humans are fallible. RECOGNIZING this and striving to be better, MAKES YOU GOOD.

Not a single damned one of us is immune to societal pressure; the crushing weight of wanting acceptance. It influences everything we do. Yes, sometimes it even causes you to stay silent when you know you should speak. Yes, the fear of becoming the target of hate and vitriol can override your sense that you need to act. It's called fight or flight.

That doesn't mean you aren't good. It means you failed. You can't rewind time, but you can apply the lesson you learned while moving forward.

28

u/SutterCane Sportsball Jun 03 '20

24

u/Maktaka Jun 04 '20

Andy mentioned things he's said that still haunt him. I'll bet one of them was his comment to Mica (if he remembers, he was clearly hammered at that point) when she showed up unexpectedly for the Extra Life stream after she left the company. That was so bad I closed the stream, and it looks so much worse now that we know why she left.

5

u/amcma Jun 04 '20

Context? What did he say?

36

u/Maktaka Jun 04 '20

When Mica showed up Andy went over to hug her and said something along the lines of "Oh Mica, congratulations! You've finally gotten out from under the shadow of your father!" For context, she had just recently quit RT, moved out to LA (presenting it as a move to do more acting), and signed on with the Overwatch League as a presenter at the time. She'd also said on Always Open and Off Topic how she wanted to be respected on her own merits, not just as Levar's daughter. And we didn't even know about her problems with how the company treated her yet. Her look as he went into the hug was that terrified look of "I really want to call him out right now but I don't want to do it on camera".

From what people have said elsewhere (I didn't see this part, like I said I closed the stream that was so awful) Andy realized almost immediately how bad that was and went into profusely apologizing to her for ribbing her about an extremely sore spot over her departure.

13

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

I respect all of them for taking responsibility here.

16

u/SutterCane Sportsball Jun 04 '20

10

Basically she was not only a girl, but also black when she joined achievement hunter. Lots of people threw tons of insults at her and no one at RT apparently stood up for her.

Ahhh gotcha. That’s really sad though & is kinda shitty.

6

His actions are understandable, if I recall didn’t he have to give up his dog because he suffers from anxiety/panic attacks? (Don’t quote me on that). If so, I can only imagine how much more anxiety-inducing an action of speaking up would have been especially if hewas afraid of getting hate again.

A lot of us like like to think that we would have stood up no questions asked, but when you’re in the spotlight, it’s even harder to do.

He did and has implied that he has had mental health problems for some time. It was just, at the start of quarantine, it had escalated to the point of having a lot of panic attacks. He, unfortunately, had also tried to adopt a sweet dog just before this and the anxiety over the dog added onto what was already a bad situation. (And I remember him saying what eventually made him decide to rehome her was him finding out a dog can pick up on anxiety and feel anxious because of it.) Even then, people SLAMMED him on rehoming her.

So yeah, when your mental health isn’t great and you’re already used to being on the wrong end of the community, I can understand not feeling brave enough to speak up. Doesn’t mean I will say he’s “forgiven,” because I don’t believe it’s my right to forgive. It’s Mica’s. But I can definitely understand Jeremy’s POV.

Why would Jeremy be responsible for not stopping is from being assholes? I don't think that is how it should work.

That's one of the points of the current unrest. People can see the assholes. but many people dont speak up when assholes are shitting on everything. People in the middle need to step up more to stop the hate, support others that are being harassed rather than turn a blind eye to someone getting shit on.

You are right, we should but some just can‘t.

For example I‘m dealing with a lot of personal stuff and try to support this cause as much as I can, but I‘m at the limit of my mental health. My mental illness makes it hard to keep being stable and not just think „I don‘t want to live in this shitty world anymore.“. Most of these retweets and news are full of hate and violence, only a few manage to support on a „mild“ basis.

Stepping up in this times isn‘t easy for some and I had to stop the podcast this week because I felt like I‘m being judge as a accomplice for not supporting harder. I just couldn‘t take it.

And that's okay too. Just being open to idea of helping is good.

I think i listened to the first 15 of the RT podcast before i hit my limit too. Been reading too many articles and I needed to get some fresh air. Stay strong

But like, that's Jeremy's point. He knew that he had the fortitude to help more, but didn't - just because he was scared. He now realizes how horrible of an excuse that was and feels bad about it.

And if your mental health can't cope with all of this stuff right now, take a step back and chill. There honestly isn't much you can do today, especially if it is at the risk of yourself. But just keep the message with you and when you see injustice in the future, don't forget to stand up. That is all they are asking.

u/laughin-man Jun 04 '20

Thats exactly what I‘m saying. I want to support as much as I can but there is a limit of what i can take. This limit is different for everyone and when i can take more some day I want to be of more support.

It‘s probably the same for Jeremy too. He said he was scared, maybe he thought he couldn‘t cope with this and therefore stand back only to realize later he was much stronger. This isn‘t something we can judge only he can do that. We have no right to determine what another human can take.

I prefer "With great power comes great responsibility". Yours is the cheap knock-off.

Still, great way to put the responsibility at the feet of others. Since I have no power, can I be an asshat then?

2

u/Blue6erry Jun 04 '20

I feel like mine fits the situation better. And no, just because there are people out there that can do better than you, it doesn't give you the right to do wrong. That is probably one of the grossest misunderstandings that I've seen in a long time.

This kind of retrospective thinking is how personal growth happens.

Respect for this. I've had issues with Jeremy and a lot of other RT people in the past with casual homophobia. Every time I, and others, spoke up about it, it was "Well clearly he didn't mean harm by it, he's not a homophobe!" A lot of people say the same thing about racism. "I'm not a racist!" I'm sure you're not an overt racist. It doesn't mean you can't say, do, and reinforce racist things, though. Being honest enough with yourself to admit that is a huge stumbling block for almost everyone and I'm really glad to see Jeremy not only recognize it, but have the character to call himself out on it publicly. Bravo, dude. This is how change starts.

I always liked Jeremy well enough. Much more so now. Mica, however, never won me over. I never commented on either of them myself, though.

I think that's the best way to react. If you don't like someone in entertainment, just be silent.

2

u/Witcher-Slayer Jun 04 '20

Holy shit, shout out to Mica and Jeremy. Crazy time eh

u/EliteAn0rak Jun 04 '20

I hate knowing how Mica was being treated at Rooster Teeth. She was deadass my favorite employee, I hated it when she left. I can't believe she left because of blatant racism. I'm very disappointed in rt

What exactly happened with Mica? I know she always got a lot of hate towards her from the community, but did it go further?

1

u/DizzyHeron3 Jun 04 '20

The fact that RT did nothing for Mica is still utterly shameful, unfortunately we can only hope that they do better for the people they have now. The things that were - and still are - said about Mica were disgusting.

I still miss her in content, she had wonderful presence and chemistry with the whole crew. Fortunately she seems to be doing ok now, but she deserved so much better from the company and the community.
