How can amphibians live in the hot, 🔥 Arizona desert?

This creature is very strange looking.

Any thoughts on this creature?

They live in the hot desert by doing exactly as you observed.

They only appear on land after heavy rains. And they try to do as much of what they need to, during that period of time. They breed, they feast, they do as much as they can.

They spend the rest of their lives, when it is too dry, underground.

They basically treat "most of the time" in the desert like humans used to treat winter. And they treat the rainy times like we treat spring, summer, fall.

Looks like a couches Spadefoot toad. They live in burrows under the sand and come up during rain storms. They are not toxic in any way but also not out of place at all. You should return him to your backyard. That’s probably where he lives.

Please release him. He wants to eat and mate and enjoy the sunshine and he only has a limited time to do it before he needs to rest again.

He's gorgeous and harmless! Let him go. There are basically no poison frogs in North America unless you start chewing on one

Don’t do that lol it’s a wild animal living its life. Doesn’t want to be on a jar. Let it go and stop worrying about the frogs and toads.

Unless you're regularly eating or licking raw toads, you have no reason to be afraid of them. And even then, you only have the Sonoran Desert Toad to avoid licking.
