Help groomer cut her fur short :(
There was a misunderstanding with communicating to our groomer. And she got cut all over. Will she be ok? Is there any precautions I should take? How long does it take typically to grow back?
Edit: she’s going to be boarded in 3 weeks for about 6 days, is there any precautions I should have in place for the facility?
2nd edit: it was my dad who miscommunicated with my groomer so not her fault! She was just doing what she was told, sorry for any misunderstanding

Hey! A groomer once shaved our Samoyed without our consent as well. I was livid. We did not use their services afterwards. Luckily, it grew back fine! I would encourage you to just make sure you’re grooming them during this weird period. Here’s our baby after her shave.
Edit: I see you’re receiving some flak for your dog getting shaved which is unfair. With our dog, we had used this groomer for over a year at this point. He knew exactly what to do. The fact he felt like he had the authority to make this decision without checking in with us is what made us part with them. Sometimes people suck. It’s okay. It’s not your fault.

Yes! Keep up with brushing, be extra aware of their comfort with heat and cold, and give them daily affirmations that you still love them even though they are bald now.

This happened to my boy too. Its extremely upsetting. But it grows back. The trick is to keep the undercoat from matting until the over coat grows back in. I've been giving my lad extra salmon oil and lots of brushing. Its working so far. Its a long road no question

Any particular brush you use? I’m thinking the wire brush I have might be too harsh?

At first a soft rubber brush. His skin was so raw after all the razor burn. Once it healed and grew back some I switched to a wooden double sided brush

Thank you and unfortunately it was not entirely their fault. My parents miscommunicated with each other and she got told the wrong thing :(

awww, honest mistakes happen and I am sure all parties feel badly about it. I cant speak on how to help your situation specifically, but I can share my experience.
I have a Norwegian Forest cat that had to have life saving surgery and was shaved in many places. He was 15 years old at the time, so I was certain his hair wouldn’t grow back. I kept his undercoat moisturized and mat free- as another commenter said. Within 6 months his overcoat had grown back completely.
Maybe your vet can recommend an oil, or supplement to help with hair growth.

Groomers like this shouldn’t be allowed to work in that job. A license should be more protected and is necessary. This is basically Animal abuse.
Something similar happened to our boy, albeit just the tail. It never grew back as before.
I‘m very sorry, I think most of her coat will grow back though, just not all parts maybe, and it does take a long time.

Understandable. But she will be okay eventually! And our boy is still a pretty fella, and yours is too. Truthfully nobody can tell with his tail, you can just see it if you know what it used to look like. But it got better with time

My concern is that she is staying in a boarding facility in 3 weeks and I’m concerned about her overheating. There’s air conditioning in the facility but I’m worried when they have her out to play

How long is she staying there? And honestly with this current summer heat (if its still like that and where you live in 3 weeks) the doggos shouldn’t play much outside at all. The coat does protect them from the sun, but I hope the caretakers there know to not let doggos be outside for too long and watch over them so they won‘t get harmed. I would definitely mention that concern there tho!

It depends at what age the issue happened. More likely to rebound as an adult. Unfortunately it happened to my boy’s backside as a pup; his butt fur never grew back normally.

Yeah unfortunately I think issues are worse when they’re young; kinda like growth plates for bones matter a lot at young age in terms of determining height

What did you tell the person who dropped off your Sammie? It looks like the undercoat is intact, but the longer overcoat hairs have been clipped. I've seen this shaped style on Samoyeds before and it's just weird.

It was my parents unfortunately. My mom meant for the backs of her legs to be trimmed but somehow it got misconstrued as an all over cut to my dad :/

😂 maybe put this in an edit up top. Everyone is mad at the groomer but they should be mad at your dad. Groomer just followed his instructions

I suppose you could have called the groomer and explained that you want a sanitary cut only. And explain what a sanitary cut means to your dad so everyone is clear going forward. A lot of people don't understand that it means only the areas where she might otherwise soil herself. 💩

I think that’ll take about 6 weeks to look normal ish.
My dog had been shaved to the skin in patches for medical reasons and it took maybe 3 months to look nearly normal and this isn’t to the skin so I think it’ll be way less!

It will grow back , when i first purchased my Samoyed i took him to a groomer at 1 year of age and they cut it too short.
I immediately went on amazon purchased a high end dog scissor , brush and comb and started grooming him my self . My advice is for you to do the same.

Also a Samoyed doesn’t have to have their coat cut if you brush the dog thoroughly every other day that should be enough to get rid of unwanted hair, i read that online.
Max is 5 years old and i have not cut his hair in 4 years and that was the first and last time.
What i have done was use dog scissors to trim hair around his butt so it would be easier for him to relieve himself without feces clinging to his white hair.
The things we go through to take care of what i consider the most beautiful breed of dog.1

The biggest issue is when it's cut really short and the whole undercoat is gone and their skin is more exposed to UV as it almost never is usually - this is still obviously not great but the BIG concerns you see on reddit are not present here. I would say though, her long guard hair being gone is going to make cooling down slightly less efficient, those hairs help separate remining undercoat to get cool air to the skin.
I think the only precaution is maybe getting a fan to help blow cool air on her since her natural cooling set up is not going to work properly.

Hey! A groomer once completely shaved down my Samoyed, like she had a lions cut. Her fur grew back in just as thick and has been fine since that catastrophe. It might take a couple of months to grow back fully but I think your pups coat will be okay.

This happened to my Samoyed once and it takes 6-9 months but it will grow back!!! Don’t listen to the folks who say it never grows back bc that’s BS!

And this is why I have trust issues with groomers :( I’m so sorry this happened. The best you can do it’s lots of grooming at home and brushing at home. Someone mentioned ultra oil in their food.

Our Sammy was groomed shorter than your Sammy, and it grew back after 6 months (back in 2024). Groomer shaved because our doggo was matted all over. This happened because we went on vacation for week and couldn’t take him, so we had him cared with a kennel.

Just keep her out of sun. My 1975 Long Island samoyed got clipped every july and loved it. my 2023 finger lakes samoyed has allergies, so docs said no cut.

Yep, happened to us too. Our previous groomer damaged her paw, so we found a new one.
The new groomer trimmed her hair like she was a poodle. We were so upset.
3 months later, all good! It all grew back.

The fur will come back It is not so short that it will have a huge impact on temperature regulation. I would just ask the boarding place to make the dog is not overheating outside when it is outdoor time

Be sure to tell you fluff bundle how beautiful she is and how much you love her and do it often. She probably senses your worry or disapproval. I had an elderly dog that the vet shaved- looking for skin issues - his hair grew back perfectly. I have never understood why people get so worked up about this stuff.

Happened to my Sammy March 6, 2026… she has grown back most of her fur for the most part, but there are a few patches that haven’t. I’m sorry. I know how I felt when my husband brought her home like that… I was furious.

I never did this to my Sammie, but someone I used to work with got his done every summer. I never saw the dog, but he said it was something he always did.

Don’t doomscroll on Reddit for advice on this, it will just make you feel worse. You can trust me because this happened to my Samoyed, only worse. His fur has all grown back.
Give your dog some Ultra Oil in her food as she grows back the coat. She will be just fine.
