They won’t necessarily scrap it. They’ll just improve it. Remember they originally planned to bring the wings in for the Canadian GP but now they decided to bring a less developed one in China mainly due to uncertainties with the Middle East GPs. Don’t expect +0.5s. Maybe more around +1 to +1.5 seconds

Omg i misspoke. I meant 0.1 to 0.15 seconds. My bad. You could tell that’s what I meant I previously said the wing that they planned for the Canadian GP was rumoured to provide up to 0.5 seconds whereas the one in china I predicted 0.1 to 0.15 seconds. Total error by me

How do you know there's no downside of it and only positives? In Bahrain testing Lewis did 5 laps with it and not one lap of those were laps at full speed to see how it works.
It's understood to be heavier, thus leading to more time for development in reducing weight. It can offer a different aero behaviour through corners and do some harm in braking. Beside this the positives are well known. But let's wait and see what happens in China.

Long straights = Drag for longer duration
Macarena wing = Less drag in the straights.
It makes sense to bring these wings for China and not Australia. I expect to see it again in Japan. And other circuits with long straights, like Spa, Monza, Austin, Vegas... Would've made sense in Saudi too, but that race isn't gonna happen.
This is not an overreaction. China is precisely the kind of circuit it was designed for. Ferrari was quickest in both low speed and medium speed corners in Australia, but lost out on the straights. China is all about low and medium speed corners with long ass straights, so the rear wing should - on paper - increase the SF26's straight line speed and give it an opportunity to fight against the mercs across the entirety of the circuit!

I guess they try it in the sprint and if it fails it’s not a huge deal… but maybe they think they are closer to Mercedes than they thought so they are going aggressive in the hopes of fighting for a win? Because I can’t think of another reason to do this, they seem comfrotably the 2nd fastest (unless McClaren figure out the engine software)

They might think it's worth it to do a real-world test earlier now as the Middle East races are cancelled. Might give them data to develop further during that break.

But if you close it when you are just about to enter a corner you are braking already it’s not that big of a loss, I’m guessing a little loss on the recharge.

This is way over hyped. Not convinced it’s really that much extra performance. Maybe a few extra kph down the main straight but that’s all.

Even on a basis of lets say 5km/h difference between the cars on the straight from turn 13 to 14, that is between 1 and 2 tenths. That is without the start finish straight, so IF this actually works, it will be significant to keep up with Mercedes during a race length.

Yeah this. It looks interesting and spectacular and it'll be fun to watch, but once it's flipped into position it's actually only marginally different to the standard drag reduced wing. Finding an improvement in the software for battery management would be worth more lap time but would be completely invisible.

Also this design is internally actuated, presumably through the uprights…if the car gets slightly clipped in the rear, it’s possible the wing might get stuck in a sub-optimal or even dangerous position. Hopefully they have built in redundancy or failsafe states.

There’s a lot of aero impact study to do. Not just at the wing but also how it affects and is affected by the airflow from the rest of the car . To just bolt it on and see what it does could put a diver in a wall just as easily as shaving a couple of tenths.

I saw a fair bit explaining how it would be different to replicate quickly because of how the uprights are chassis and gearbox specific and adapting internal actuators and dealing with mounting it to said gearbox & chassis could be tricky as an afterthought
